Few people can say they made an actual important film. Lots of people make good movies but very few make legitimately important films. This was such an important film.

TheReply818, Absolutely! You see how willing Hollywood is for attention to it to remain buried? We need to dust this off and bring it back every 10 years or so. The industry still has issues, and Townsend's hilarious, scathing rebuke is still relevant today!

I've tried to say this...people feel it doesn't belong with Do the Right Thing... poppycock. Important in so many ways and STILL the best movie I've seen on self worth/self respect.

AJ monteen true but in my view it has to be put into this context the marketing people and I was 22 at the time more promoted how he made the film short ends and credit cards than they did the film’s content. Also because Spike has she’s gotta have it in 1986 this was seen more as part of the indie black film movement. It was seen as a statement film instead of as the great comedy it is.

playboymaxim The hell are you talking about? Lol, I know! I agree with you! The Wayans brothers are legendary comedians which is also a big part of what made this film great...I’m simply saying it had a small fan base and many don’t even know about this movie, so this is a weird way to start a dispute...Mr. Asshole.

@@mew10521 The problem is that black people must build Black Hollywood. We must build our own. Hollywood was never designed for black people period. THEY created Hollywood for the benefit of THEM FOLKS. Black people are not allowed to play good prominent roles. We are not allowed to compete with them and they made it clear that if you are in their Hollywood you must play stereotype roles. We must build our own studios and distribution companies.

Robert Townsend was brilliant in spoofing how Hollywood wanted to portray blacks to the world. During this time, movies like Black Panther could never hit the scene and would only be put in a comic book. But Hollywood loved to portray blacks as pimps and drug dealers. The reason why the movie 'Hidden Figures' had such a title was due to such realities for blacks were actually 'hidden."
