They got lumped into grunge because there commercial peak was right at the grunge peak as well. But they sounds and are more influenced by 80s hair metal rather than the bands that influenced the Seattle grunge bands.

They were big for a short time. They're still around. They came out just before Grunge came out and killed of hair metal. . They had a good number of fans, but other bands didn't like them because they had a sense of humor, and that made other acts think they were a joke. They had a number of hit songs despite only really being big for a couple of albums. I'd recommend the song "neighbor" (or maybe it was called be my neighbor). They also did a great cover of "Cats in the Cradle" that you can check out.

Ugly Kid Joe was formed in 1987 by Whitfield Crane and Klaus Eichstadt. The two childhood friends had grown up together in Isla Vista, California and had a shared passion for music.

Ugly Kid Joe came out during the Grunge era but was more of an Anti-Grunge band. They’re from Isla Vista, California which would explain their more laid back/surfer look. Their name is a spoof on the glam metal band Pretty Boy Floyd’s name. They have a lot of great songs. I’d recommend reacting to Madman & their cover of Cats in the Cradle.

They're still killing it today, they've been low key huge for years with a big break in between, but have a mid size militant fan base and a great catalog with more hits than most realize. Alot of other bands disliked them for their sense of humor, felt they didn't take the music scene seriously enough, but it was just immature egos and sour grapes.

There was a Glam Band named Pretty Boy Floyd and they named their band the opposite of that Ugly Kid joe. They played a show at one of the big festivals a few years ago. The singer sounds the same AMAZING. Love this band.

This song was huge and non stop on MTV when it was released. Their cover of the ballad song 'Cat's In The Cradle' was also a huge hit. I saw them live only 4 years ago and they still killed it. They have a lot of great songs, like many others commented, highlighy underrated. I think they were / are even a tad more popular in Europe than US. Go figure lol. Anyway, super cool that you discovered them and from seeing how Whitfield and the other members behaved on stage and interacted with the audience, I highly doubt they were bullies as kids. They seem like the coolest and friendliest guys :D

You should check out Another Animal. It's basically Godsmack, but changed the vocalist for Ugly Kid Joe's vocalist Whitfield Crane. If I remember correctly, a couple of the Godsmacks were in Ugly Kid Joe as well. Also Ugly Kid Joe's Vocalist had a 1 album(Prince Valium) band called Medication. I love the song Inside from that album ^^

Ugly Kid Joe got silenced at an outdoor show on Canada Day 1993. It rained and the rodeo infield was a swamp. They wanted the crowd to throw mud at the stage. It rained mud. Then they told the crowd to aim for the sound tower in the middle of the crowd. So I heard a song and quarter live. Maybe the band name Bullies was already taken, by an ugly kid named Joe. Also on the menu was Def Lepp, April Wine, Tom Cochrane....

The name is a spoof on Pretty Boy Floyds name. The bands biggest song was a remake on Chaplins "Cats in the cradle". Still active today they released Rad wings of Destiny in 2022 after 7 years. They toured in 2023 with Fozzy and Pistols at Dawn.

Ugly kid Joe was trying several band names before their first concert over 100 people they were to open for Pretty Boy Floyd a glam band back then, so as a joke they came up with UKJ and it stuck even though pretty boy bailed on the concert. They were set to be the best new band of the year when pearl jam hit the scene and took those honors. The are the first band to go multi platinum on an LP.

Ugly Kid Joe was formed in California, definitely one of the hard rock bands that was perfect for the 90's but UKJ just fizzled out after 3 full albums + 1 EP and broke up by 1998... They had humor and satirical at points, looked casual in shorts... The 'ugly kid' was their mascot on the album covers and I'm pretty sure they were geeks & misfits ... Their guitarist Dave Fortman became a successful producer w/ bands like Slipknot, Evanescence, Mudvayne, etc. Thankfully, Ugly Kid Joe reunited in 2010 and has been playing occasional shows and released new music. Formed in the 80's, Ugly Kid Joe eventually solidified their line-up by 1991 and released the EP 'Ugly as they wanna be'... w/ Whitfield Crane (vocals), Klaus Eichstadt & Dave Fortman (guitars), Cordell Crockett (bass), Mark Davis (drums)... 'Everything about you' became a huge MTV hit and the EP sold platinum plus... Their first full album in 1992 "America's least wanted" sold a half million copies in the US and did well overseas... The album had 2 covers - one of the 'ugly kid' posing as the statue of liberty and flipping the bird... and a 'censored' cover w/ the 'ugly kid' chained, gagged & taped and his hand w/ the middle finger taped up 😂 UKJ had a great cover of the Harry Chapin song "Cat's in the cradle" as a single... original songs like - 'Neighbor' ... 'Madman' ... didn't do as well on MTV or radio. After a delay, Shannon Larkin (drums) joined UKJ (Larkin later joined the band Godsmack as the drummer... he and vocalist Whitfield Crane did 1 album as Another Animal w/ members of Godsmack in 2007) ... UKJ released their 2nd album 'Menace to sobriety' in 1995, but radio + MTV refused to promote it actively in the alternative rock era, despite great songs like - "Milkman's son" ... "Tomorrow's world"... 🤘🤘🔥🔥 UKJ released a 3rd album 'Motel California' in 1997 on a small label, but the band split up soon after it sold poorly. In 2010, Ugly Kid Joe reunited on demand to play limited concerts... They eventually recorded another EP 'Staiway to Hell' in 2012... and made a full return in 2015 w/ their 4th album 'Uglier than they used ta be'... Their latest album was 'Rad wings of destiny' in 2022.

The band chose their name as a play on another band's name who were named after the Depression-era folk hero Pretty Boy Floyd. They were a party band and their songs were mostly jokey like this one. "Neighbor" was about a terrible family moving next door to you and the chorus was a play on Mr. Rogers' Neighbrohood's theme song, "Madman" was about a serial killer who targeted children in Disneyland, etc. But they also had serious songs like "Busy Bee," that's ironically about being cool with everybody because you're too busy and don't care enough to get into arguments, and their solid cover of Harry Chapin's "Cats In The Cradle." You're right that they had massive appeal to teenagers back then, but they're not an industry plant. The guys literally toured opening for Ozzy back then. They were just a hard rock/heavy metal band that was the same age as the Grunge/Alt Rock bands of the early '90's but didn't make the same kind of serious music.

"Ugly Kid Joe" came about as pretty much a joke response to an LA based based band called "Pretty Boy Floyd" a glam band who took their name from a prohibition era gangster. {imho} The drummer on this song is Shannon Larkin I believe. Met him when he was with a band called "Wrathchild" then they had to change it to "Wrathchild America. He would come hang out at our shows if we were in the area. The band gave my band some opening slots back in the day. Hella good band live. did a hellacious version of Pink Floyd's "Time" and had some really killer originals. "Climbing the Walls" and "Surrounded by Idiots" were among them. Shannon is currently pounding skins for "Godsmack"
