There was a hair metal band called Pretty Boy Floyd, so they named themselves Ugly Kid Joe. These guys were a metal band, but not thrash. Good sense of humor. I actually love this album (America's Least Wanted). Very underrated IMO. The main reason they didn't get bigger than they did was that they came out in the early 90s when grunge was starting to take over, but they still had a sort of hair metal sound and that just wasn't where music was at anymore. But yeah, some really good stuff on that album. It's one I usually listen to all the way through. You should check out their cover of "Cats in the Cradle". It's really good.

I'm divided on this band. They came out in 91, when hair metal was on the way out, but they kept changing and sounding more up to date with each album. They don't get enough credit for their Korn / Rage sound on Motel California. Most people didn't hear the later stuff and thought of them as hair metal. They always had modern elements to their sound, and worked hard to shed that hair metal image. I highly recommend Motel California, I love their more aggressive sound

Ugly Kid Joe had potential to be huge in the 90's... they had a punk rock attitude... the playing skills and a great vocalist Whitfield Crane. Guitarist Dave Fortman went on to produce a number of major bands like Evanescence, Slipknot, Superjoint Ritual, etc... But UKJ slipped into obscurity, despite 3 great albums - "America's least wanted" (1992), 'Menace to sobriety' (1995) and 'Motel California' (1997) They reunited for another full album in 2015 - 'Uglier than they used ta be'. UKJ songs - "Milkman's son" ... 'Neighbor' ... 'Cats in the cradle' (Harry Chapin cover) ... 'My old man' ... "Tomorrow's world" ... "Don't go"... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

I remember them. Funny video and song. They and other hair rock bands kind of faded away during the early - mid '90s. When alt rock, grunge, punk, rap were blowing up in the mainstream, more popular. Most of us at my high school couldn't get into hair bands. They were more like Guns and Roses though. Edgier than most hair rock bands those times. One of the few hair bands we liked.

I've got a great Whitfield Crane story. Back in the mid to late 90's I was in a metal band, and the lead singer and I were trying to start up a local metal magazine. He had set up an interview with Whitfield Crane (UKJ Singer), but at the last minute, couldn't go, so I went instead. At the time, my car was in the shop (Red Trans Am) so I had to borrow my mothers mini van (a Chevy Lumina). I show up early, there's about 1500 people lined up to get in. I knew the owners of the club, so I bypassed everyone and got inside. I had to show the tour manager my questions etc... and he told me to wait, so I did. Ten minutes later, he comes to me and asks: "Did you drive here?" I looked at him, confused: "Yeah". "What did you drive?" "A van", I said. He said, ok, you can drive us. "What the WHAT????" He brings over Whitfield, introduces us, and the guitar player. Looked out the window at the crowd. "Can you drive to the back entrance, and pick us there?" I was gobsmacked. This was unexpected. So I went outside, I was nearly mobbed because I think people thought I was important, security actually pushed them away. When I got to the van, I realized... Oh, shit... it was filled with all my little sisters toys and stuffed animals as well as her car seat.I started throwing everything in the back to make room, it was humiliating being in a mini van, let alone one filled with toys. I picked everyone up and Whitfield asked me if I knew where a certain restaurant was (by the beach). I said, yes. And so long story short, I took him, Klaus Eichstadt (guitar) and the tour manager to dinner, had dinner with them, did the interview, drove back and got to watch the show from backstage. A top 5 metal moment of mine. Still my favorites of their many great songs is "Madman" (off their first release (As Ugly as They Wanna be) and "G-Ddamned Devil" off of (America's Least Wanted). If you don't like those two songs, you're not a UKJ fan.
