This is my favorite Soundgarden song. It’s about feeling pent up. Chris Cornell wrote this song while on a van tour in Europe. Stuck in a rusty van in a desolate countryside felt like being stuck in a rusty cage. Fun fact: He never wrote down the lyrics, they just always stuck with him. As far as the music, Chris said, “I wanted to create this hillbilly Black Sabbath crossover that I’d never heard before.” Great reaction, as well.

Chris also said that Rusty Cage was one of the hardest songs to sing and play live.

@@poundtacos4006 Right? I guess if you repeat something enough times, it really does become muscle memory. I'm still impressed with Anna Kendrick doing the cup thing while singing at the same time. But I'm also impressed by any drummer who can sing and play at the same time.
@HenritheHorse8 ай бұрын
@@chrissampson7569 I would say most drummers play straight beats while singing which is pretty "easy", but I can sing and play Rusty Cage, but doing the odd riffs while singing is hard! For example this song would be million times easier to sing and play the drums same time.

Pearl Jam is generally regarded as ‘number four’ in the big 4 of grunge Here come 150 comments about what is and is not ‘grunge’ Soundgarden: Burden in My Hand, Blow Up the Outside World, Rhinosaur, Drawing Flies, Hands All Over, Birth Ritual, Flower, Beyond the Wheel, Pretty Noose (unfortunate title but one of my favorites)… there are so many great ones! Piece of My Heart has always been my favorite Janis Joplin song. She really kills it on Cry Baby too. One of he kings of alternative hard rock and metal of the 90's. I don't use the term "grunge" because it was invented by the media, and the bands themselves are like "wtf is "grunge"? Yet everyone uses it and it drives me nuts. Oh well. They were around in the late 80's before that word existed, it was just "alternative" music back then, to different degrees of heaviness. This one is pretty much a straight metal song. But yeah, this got heavy rotation on MTV back when they played good music.

@@bettyrocker_Lia upon reviewing Purple after 15? 20 yrs? I can concede the album holds closer to the tone of grunge than I remember, so much so that Lounge Fly and Silvergun Superman are almost encroaching on Soundgarden territory just as Interstate Love Song does with the Pearl Jam sound or as Army Ants is to AIC. My initial point of STP's inconsistency with the sound of grunge, particularly when compared to PJ, may have been overstated.

Crazy soulful tribute to their friend/ex bandmate Andy Wood, the singer of mother lovebone.

Great song by a great band. Although Chris Cornell was first inspired to write the song while on tour in Europe, I suspect the pent-up rage came from his upbringing. His older brother said the two of them were repeatedly beaten by their father, who was an alcoholic. Chris began experimenting with illegal substances at only 12-yo as an escape. If you want more songs with soul from Chris, I agree with another commenter that you should check out “When I’m Down” - the live performance at the Troubadour in 2010. Written by Chris Cornell for piano. Incredible, soulful performance. There are lots of great Soundgarden songs still to react to, including The Day I Tried to Live, Mailman, Blow Up the Outside World, My Wave, and of course Black Hole Sun. I think Big, Dumb Sex off an early album (Louder Than Love) is also worth a listen because it’s a hilarious spoof of the groupie-obsessed hair metal bands of the 80’s. Of course, the F-word features heavily in that one, so not sure whether that’s something you want on your channel.

Andrew from Mother Love Bone and Chris were best friends during their teenage years. At 16 Andrew OD'd, they were roommates. Chris was to be home but came in to find Andrew dead. It was the catalyst to Chris's tortured life. So SO sad. I believe there's an interview where he talked about it or Edie Vedder does. I know Eddie doesn't talk about Chris's end. He states if he tried to he'd probably join him. Chris's eldest daughter has lived with Vedders family for years and is considered a daughter. Makes me cry....

As others have mentioned the Big Four were Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. (I still have issues with the "grunge" label, but that's a different argument [Nirvana is more of a punk band, AIC is hard/heavy rock, Soundgarden is mostly prog rock, Pearl Jam is just straight-up alternative].) As for more Soundgarden songs to react to (and I fully encourage more from Soundgarden): "Beyond the Wheel" shows off three of Chris' four-octave vocal range. "Birth Ritual" is an often overlooked song that will pretty much rip your face off. "Burden In My Hand" off Soundgarden's underrated _Down on the Upside_ album. "Room A Thousand Years Wide" off of _Badmotorfinger_. (One of my favorite songs from them.)
