Building Set Walls | Jack Stands & Support Bracing For Hollywood Flat Stage Wall Panels (Pt.4)

Building set walls we show how to brace and stabilize your set wall and make a jack stand or several jacks to support and make the hollywood flats stand up on their own. Broadway flats, theater flats, or stage flats are made very similar but this video will give you an idea of how we make our photo sets, trade show booth walls, and our Haunt wall panels. Learn how to make modular wall panels or TV Flats for a large facade, wall or haunt panels for a Halloween maze, theatrical sets for plays, trade show, or if you need studio flats for your film set or just a small backdrop for a photography session. Here is the Fourth video of a how to series that will show you in detail all the steps we take to build our wall panels for our Halloween haunt and other scenic projects we work on. In this episode we will go over adding wood to the back side of the Hollywood Flats for attaching support jacks. The support jacks and bracing are key especially when you are making walls that will be free standing. We also share how we make our sandbags to weigh down the walls and keep them from falling, methods that work for us, and some of the tools you can use for the job We also go over several tips and subjects to point out as you go through the process of constructing your walls. You can build these walls for $25 to $35 a piece depending on where you shop and if your making 8' or 10' walls. We try to shop for 16' long 1" x 3" at your local lumber yards to get a cheaper price than the big hardware stores. Primed Luan or also called underlayment plywood is usually a little more expensive than unpainted. you can find them for around $15 for a 4' x 8' unpainted sheet.

What if you want to make it portable ? Can you add hinges to the jacks to close it up flat? And how?

mount loose pin hinges on the jacks and the walls. you can just pop the pins out or you can replace the pins with bent nails so you can slide them out easily

Yes this could work we have made media walls for several different venues you just have to make sure they are weighted down in the back.

Is there any proportion system you follow to how big you build the support jacks in relation to how high you build the flat wall? Curious to how long to make the horizontal element of the support jack in order to support the flat wall.

Julian Dumo I usually use 2' to 3' long for 8' tall and then 4' for 10' to 14' tall walls. then i add about 50 to 75 pounds of sand on each jack which is more than enough support. If fact to be honest you could use one jack for a wall that is 12 wide and 10' tall. It's really just making it more safe than you have to I think

Really appreciate the response! Those were similar lengths that I thought would be safe to use - nice to have that reassurance from someone that always builds these types of structures. I assume the vertical element of the jack measures to atleast half the height of the wall if not a bit more? And do you think one support jack is sufficient to support a 4' x 8' flat? (Placed in the middle)

I usually just run the jack most if not the whole way up the wall but 6' should work too and yes one would be enough for sure. Just be sure to get some screws in several places to get a good connection.

Hi how do u calculate the distance of the jack (bottom plate and how high you attach it to the wall frame?

I try and make it 8' tall and 2',3', or 4' out on the bottom depending how much room you have. The shorter it is the or weight you will need

What sand do you use to fill up the sand bags? Do you just use dirt from your backyard or go to the beach or buy it from a hardware store? Epic! I've been watching your videos and just built 6 flats!

What's the best way to join two outside corner flats?

You can use an L brace like I made for the vertical part of the jack stand screwed from the inside into the backs of the two flats. Just zip a screw at each of the frame levels every 2' or whatever.

How would you secure a two sided wall?

Whenever we need to have two sided walls there are a couple ways we go about it. One is if we are able we always try to lock walls together across the tops. One great way is to use Coffin locks recessed inside the walls that lock together by pressure hooks. You simply turn them with an Allen head wrench and they are locked together. Hey Danny we use 3/8" - 16 - 2 1/2" long and I like to use the fully threaded ones without the shank because I can get them to squeeze the walls together tighter.
