How we build our studio flats, TV flats, or Hollywood flats and set walls we use for all our temporary prop Halloween facades, false fronts, and walkthrough maze walls. You will learn tips how to build walls used in movies, television, commercials, trade shows, and film sets. This behind the scenes tutorial will give the beginner the basics of one way to make a wall panel for their haunt. This way of constructing is easy to understand and easy to do. Professional set decorators & set designers use this method to make walls for their scenery. The walls can be stored in a stack together to help save on storage space. Its the same construction style that we used on the Halloween mausoleums for last years overgrown cemetery & grave yard haunt we set up in our front yard. Each wall is constructed from 1" X 3" framing and skinned and wood glued to 1/4" underlayment Luan plywood. If you don't have pneumatic tools you could pre-drill and use screws and drills as another alternative. The walls you see in this video are going to go to our old western mining ghost town barber shop and dentist facade this year. The town is called Grave Rock Gulch. We hope this video helps some of you and gives you some information and ideas for your future projects or Halloween decoration and decor needs. I use a staple or nail gun for speed but with pre-drilling and using screws the end product would be stronger. Either method works especially if you glue the sheet goods to the framed wall.

40 MORE YIKES! LOL! If you use wood glue the staples are really just there until the glue is dry and that's what will really hold the walls together. Air guns are nice to speed things up and is a great investment for building props. Not sure if we will be able to complete your order this year. :)

Man what a great idea using the screw and the hammer! None of my projects ever square up that is going to help a ton! When you assembled the edges and the toggles did you nail them together or screw them together?

Love your videos. I built 5 panels with your instructions. Now, how do you get rid of the seems between walls? 😬😜

So if you want to keep them separate the only thing I do is paint the wall color on the inside edges so it helps hide And blend the seam but if the walls are staying together you could always bondo or fill with drywall mud then paint.

Chris, I think using the air stapler is a way faster way to get these built. Will the staples that are used for the skin hold up for a long time? I guess it don't matter, it's still easier to pop a few in from time to time. When you get done with yours, I need to place an order for 40 more for our haunt. Just let me know when you will be delivering them.

Actually, toggles are placed every 4' on center. Toggles placed every 2' are for stock platform framing. Don't forget your nailing blocks on your hollywood style flats.

It all depends on the project or shop. For decades we did 38.5" toggles centered on 30"~ 32" [for 10' and 8' respectively] with no center 'stud [no 'gate framing'], a classic 'studio' flat, not to be confused with hollywood framing which is a 24" grid. Platforms can be done on 32's also depending on the loading. Studio flats can have 4 corner reinforcing block, rarely if ever have I seen them on actual hollywood sets.

Actually toggles on a professional studio flat are "swing nailed" every 2'. Some TV flats are built with toggles every 2'-6" but 2' is the standard for stiles and toggles. You'll only see toggles at 4' on amateur or non-union sets. Stiles run length and die into top and bottom rails.

I didn't see the part where you misplaced the square or your pencil or chalk line and spent 5 minutes swearing and walking around looking for it?? I thought that was a requisite part of building?? Haha thanks or the how-to!

The only places I shop since my bike got stolen from the rack at the home depot! haha Seriously, our suppliers said they could order pallets up from LA which is what the films do but our shop never needed that kind of quantity.
