We go hands-on with a prototype of the Looking Glass Portrait, a self-contained holographic display that can show volumetric photos, video, and cg models without the use of 3D glasses. It's the latest invention from Looking Glass Factory, and we chat with the company's co-founder Shawn Frayne about how the display technology works and the process of turning portrait-mode photos into 3D images like what we've seen in science fiction films. Thanks to Looking Glass for loaning us this unit to test!

The Tilt Five is the only current tech that would work for "A dnd or a card game with a table..." at anything close to a reasonable price (four HoloLens could also work, if your bank balance was up to it...)

Have you heard of a device called a Nintendo 3ds? This is the same technology as that
@MasDouc
@MasDouc 3 жыл бұрын
@@monoham1 No its not, not even close. The 3DS basically used a typical stereoscopic approach, where two slightly different angles are processed differently by our eyes to mimic 3D. It's the same effect as having like, 2D cutouts at different distances. Imagine a video of a guy turning around in this thing, its actual 3D, you're seeing all of the angles so you can see every hair strand at different angles as you move around, not just a 2D cut out of that guy. With the 3DS if you moved your head out of the "sweet spot" the image becomes distorted because you're breaking the illusion. If you were playing Zelda in this you could turn your head to the side and actually "see" around Link and see the grass of Hyrule going off in the distance outside of the viewpoint of the screen if you were looking at it head on. It's amazing technology.
@monoham1
@monoham1 3 жыл бұрын
@@MasDouc it's still the same technology, except instead of 2 cutouts, it's dozens You have a pixel with 2 sides, each only visable from one angle. This just has more sides so it's not entirely new I'm not even sure it's a hologram

It is not a hologram. I taught Holography and currently teach Digital Media Design. It is an autostereoscopic display. This has nothing to do with holography or interferometry. @18:45 A hologram is an interference pattern created by 2 beams of coherent light. When the reference light is recreated, the object light is reproduced with the amplitude and direction of the original object light.

The next breakthrough will be when they realize they can layer display panels and use focal lengths, polarization or diffraction to select for which panel is seen from a given position. This solves the pixel density problem. Diffraction gratings and polarization effects show us practically that we can get light through "opaque" objects like display panels easily with precision placement and precision optics. They are already 90% there. Upvote this so they see it and version 3 will be even better ;)

i have first gen version and the lucite was there for the illusion only, had nothing to do with the "projections" and all.. this new version gives illusion that it's more sunk in that projecting outside the screen, but the white lines they are placing to help with grounding the illusion actually break up the illusion, as the hologram passes behind the white lines in the back.. it's subtle but shows that the first version looks more believable

So, this is kinda like the matrix ‘taking 50 pictures at once across a horizontal plane’ bullet time photography, in a display that as you turn it, displays picture 1 + 2, then 3 + 4, then 5 + 6, etc. to each eye without glasses, creating a sense of rotational depth, and can use depth mapping or stereophotography to simulate the same effect, interpolated via an app. Interesting.

Could you cut out various layers of a flat image, split into various planes of depth on a prespecified slice of depth beginning with a small rectangle centrally moving outward in increasing concentric squares that would move to the edge of the image, place them on various separate layers within like photoshop layers system which would then be rendered as one image on the looking glass display. This would be for flat images that don’t contain the lidar information in the background. Just a theory. Not sure if this would suit as this is based on just from watching some of the video.

Now we just need to miniaturize laser sky etching (the effect you see at concerts where the words are displayed in the air) so we can finally have Back to the Future style 3d advertisements. Also something I'd be interested in would be making an entire TV screen with this technology for a proper VR setup without risk of breaking things due to being unable to see things in the real world. From your description, I think you're thinking of transparent screens. Although there's already at least one TV that makes use of this, they'll be more transparent OLED panels shown off for CES this year, which is in the next few days.
@TobiasRieperGER
@TobiasRieperGER 3 жыл бұрын
@@TReKiE I have seen a selfmade transparent screen on a PC hardware fare, where one CaseModder build this into the glass side of the case. He used white RGB light pushed on an acryl piece to make it more see-able. All in all very hard to read and really unuseable at all. This selfmade transparent screen can't show white colors, white was transparent, so he made a slideshow of pictures and let this show on the sidewall of the case. And then some pics came with white-ish colors at the rim arround and it looked like the pic was a holo inside the case. That was impressive and i asked him how he build this screen, and he said, its an old screen, splitted the panel with a razor... etc etc etc... When he told me, that the chance of not damaging the needed piece is at 10-20 % i decided to forget the last details of the tutorial. Maybe i have some pics of this Case in my data storage... 4 TB of pictures, yeah, i need more holidays...

@@TobiasRieperGER That does sound pretty cool. I have heard of variants of that particular project before (Googling it will show some too). If the transparent OLED panels ever make it to the mainstream, they would be great for such casemods, digital photo frames, signage, etc. Like everyone else here, I look forward to seeing what becomes of that and Looking Glass.

@@TReKiE We will see what the future will bring us. I am 40 now, i have not much time left. The industry is to slow with inventing new stuff. If you take the old movies like Bladerunner, BTTF etc, we are rather to slow with new stuff.
@TReKiE
@TReKiE 3 жыл бұрын
@@TobiasRieperGER I'm only a few years younger and I respectfully disagree with the idea that invention is slow. I'd encourage you to take a look at the Bill Gates' book from the late 90s, "The Road Ahead". It's a good reminder of how the 90s was, and how much Gates' predictions came true. Based on your examples though, I suspect you're more referring to flying cars and hoverboards, which would be amazing, but unfortunately is less about invention and more about basic energy physics. In order to have either of those inventions, you need to be able to pack in enough energy into a small space with minimal weight. The numbers simply don't add up with current overall technology to make that realistically happen. We'll need a big new discovery to make that ever change. Also I think it's important to note that our innovation has allowed us to go through a pandemic without the world ending, and produce multiple vaccines in less than a year. Even a decade or so earlier, that would not have been possible. I'll gladly give up the hoverboard for that 😀
