Her name is homura in japanese? Why is it different in english, it's not like we haven't been exposed to other anime characters called homura before

Localization. It was the same for the original Xenoblade, Fiorung and Carna = Fiora and Sharla.

From what I heard, "Homura" means "fire" in Japanese, which fits her motif since she's a fire user. "Pyra" is the female connotation of the word "Pyro". Since she's a female fire user, there wouldn't be any English word more fitting to address her as. This is one of those times where the English localization has my approval since I normally support the original Japanese names of characters.

I don't dislike the localization team, but they clearly decided to change as many Japanese words as possible. Mythra is "Hikari", Dromarch is "Byakko", etc. I do like the changes for Pyra/Mythra, but renaming the undead samurai Yoshimitsu, into Percival is definitely byzarre

Homura does mean fire, yes. They changed it to Pyra in English so that it sounds more like a name you'd call someone, since it'd be weird to call her "Fire", unlike in Japanese, regardless Homura still sounds like a name you'd call someone.
