Do Pacific halibut live in both saltwater AND freshwater? I ask because I read online that Pacific halibut can live in the Columbia River in Washington, Oregon, and Canada.

There is no way that's 120 unless Jeremy is 10 feet tall. I've been catching these for the last 20 years and that's a nices 60 pounder. Perfect eater any bigger and they arn't any good to eat

Once they start to get larger than about 60 to 80 pounds the meat gets grainy and full of mercury. The taste and texture begin to decline. Think of it similar to beef, veal is way better than an old steer at the end of it's life. We prefer the 20 to 60 pound range. Also they are bottom feeders and tend to have a lot of worms in the belly area as they get older the worms spread through their body. Not a big deal as long as you cook the meat properly. hence why I don't eat sushi!

Halibut aren't dangerous
@petesampson4273
@petesampson4273 8 жыл бұрын
Halibut will give a nice pull, straight down, but they can't compare to a salmon or a shark or even a "bat ray" (smaller version of a manta). I've caught 5 foot halibut that don't match the strength, not to mention speed, of a 30 inch salmon. A 5 foot blue shark? You better have 4 times as much line as you need for a halibut. A big pelagic ray? Don't even bother with anything less than 150lb line. I hooked into a big one with 60lb. test and I was completely helpless to slow it down much less turn it. They aren't terribly fast but the way that they are constructed, using their entire body as one big fin, makes them immensely strong and efficient. Heck! One could argue that a 20lb. pike is more dangerous than a halibut of any size. I had a pike of about 30 inches, (maybe 6lb. ?) catch me unaware and it managed to bite clean through the nail of the ring finger on my right hand and hang there while it turned the end of my finger into hamburger. It then proceeded to thrash around until my buddy got to me to help me get it loose. It left me with a serious puncture wound deep and some serious lacerations in the heart of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. By the end of the first day I was kept busy squeezing pus out of the wounds and soaking them in iodine. When I got back to civilization, about 4 days, I had lost 20 pounds and had a fever of 103F. A 20lb. pike, and I've caught more than a few, would have simply removed the end of my finger. Halibut don't even deserve mention when talking about dangerous fish.
@petesampson4273
@petesampson4273 8 жыл бұрын
***** You're right. I should have said "pull" rather than "strength". A 5 foot halibut is stronger but a salmon is so much faster that it pulls harder and can rip a hundred yards of line off your reel as easily as a halibut bulldogs straight down once one manages to lift it off the bottom.
@petesampson4273
@petesampson4273 8 жыл бұрын
***** Not to mention that both halibut and salmon are fun to catch and delicious in their different ways!
