OK here's the reason why you can't find the one. II (the drummer) moves the one A LOT. Most Sleep Token songs are actually in 4/4 contrary to popular opinion. BUT....... sometimes II is ahead of the one, next measure he's slightly behind the one. Do that in a pattern and it sounds like some creazy time signature but really it's just 4/4 with the one transposed over and over and over. It's actually super clever.
@HIM_066xMusicReactions5 ай бұрын
🙏🏾 ty for breaking it down -- this was def a first for me 🤯
@cerebrix5 ай бұрын
@@HIM_066xMusicReactions The thing about II is this. He's 100% a gospel drummer. Think Tony Royster Jr., think Thomas Pridgen. All those linear patterns and improvisation fills. He's just playing gospel drumming over all the genres. That's the coolest part about this band. I don't care if he's doing metal double kick stuff, his hands are still all 100% gospel chops. You should check out his drumeo video if you want to geek out on it. He plays all their biggest tracks in that video. It's here on youtube. Just search for "Sleep Token Drumeo". It'll be the video that's like 20 minutes long or something like that. It's mostly performance so if you're into watching sick drummers. It's a fun time.

The lore behind sleep token really is worth looking into. A very short and simple explanation is that vessel was visited by a deity named “sleep” and the two have a tumultuous relationship. Vessel offers songs as offering or “tokens” if you will, to sleep but as you listen to the rest of the album of take me back to Eden, you’ll see vessel is tired and done and wants to break free from this, essentially, abusive relationship. There’s much much more to it and I recommend just taking a dive into it

And then just jump in and go from the beginning through the whole discography. It is so, so much better if you listen from the beginning in order. But if you really wanna get a taste of Vessel's talent, go listen to Hey Ya. Loving these reactions, subscribed to watch Sleep Token blow you mind even more! 😄

It took me 8 listens to get used to this one. When I saw it live for the first time it was a real highlight with everyone singing along. I saw a video that was recorded by the promoter from the balcony and we were LOUD! Somehow, they can make it even better from the stage!
@jaroslavsvaha60655 ай бұрын
I think, without really trying to verify it, the reason you found the intro so confusing was cause the instruments were basically playing a 6/8 melody over a 4/4 click, while the hihat and vocals followed the 4/4 click. I might be off on the specifics, but it's something like that. And I'm sure the first verse is actually in 4/4
@89ceilidh5 ай бұрын
Yeah I said something about the rhythm in my own comment. ST and II in particular tend to use polyrhythms in their music and it can be confusing at times to people who are so used to hearing everything in 4/4

Listen to it twice...you will find the cadence. I can bob my head to it. They're literally redefining how people perceive Time Signatures. The verses are 2 bars of 6/8 followed by a bar of 4/4, fill at the intro comes in on the 4 of 6/8, but I believe the rest of the song is 4/4.

With the tempo issue, if you follow the high hat at the beginning of the song you’ll find that it’s at 173 and in 87 at certain points for half time. The time signatures also change, but if keep the constant 173 at the heavy section/ movement, you’ll find it’s easy to follow with.

So their entire discography is a story, a lot of people think it’s about a relationship with some goddess called Sleep. Only problem with that is Veasel refers to asleep as a he and said sleep resides in our subconscious. These songs are about a relationship, very toxic on both sides and how he comes to terms with things. I won’t ask you to go back any further than sundowning, but the story starts with ep One

So you have to count the downbeat. Ignore the notes between, they're there to give the impression of off timing. The whispered section before the solo is just eighth notes. Count it off and you clearly see it.

Beat is off because it’s off tempo if you’re looking for a normal 4-4 frame. The chorus is the only thing that keeps a relatively normal structure. I highly suggest starting at the beginning album and working your way through, the payoff with the final song through the trilogy (Sundowning, TPWBYT and TBMTE) is so worth it.
