Reverend is single handedly responsible for curing me of my decades long USA only snobbery…. I’ve now been through 7-8 of them and built a growing group of lifelong guitars. The quality to $ ratio represents the best value out there imho… They are extremely solid, insanely good QC, unique retro/modern looks and they sound great. The bass contour knob is extremely useful… Wish I had it on all my guitars. Anyone should be proud to play one out at gigs.

Just saw your comment. I just recently acquired a reverend Warhawk 390. I have had hundreds of guitars over the last 50 years. Lots of vintage and collectible models. I still have Gibson's and fenders and a couple of Eastman's. I think the Reverend is probably the best guitar I've ever played. It's the pickup combinations along with the treble bleed and the bass Contour. You can make it sound like a Stratocaster, Telecaster, Les Paul special, you name it that is all those and some other crazy stuff too. I am super impressed with these things
@Julioc96

In case someone doesn't know, the third knob is what Reverend calls Bass Contour. Works similar to a Tone control but with the low end. At 10 it's the full sound of the pickups and at 0 is taking out all the low end it can, that's why it sounds more single-coilish.
@welntaod
@welntaod 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. Whereas most tone knobs remove the highs, the bass contour removes lows. This high pass filter thins the pickup sound out and causes amps not to overdrive as easily from lower frequencies. I own a Spacehawk and Buckshot and the Bass Contour is a huge brand advantage.

Reverend guitars are like the hidden secret and it shouldn't be. They make fantastic guitars. I had purchased the Greg Koch Gristlemaster signature and it rocks so well. It sounds so clean and can get mean if you want it to. The action is perfect, the neck is fast and baked Maple. For a Tele-style guitar, they do compare with The Fender American-made ones. @sam cannici it’s pretty decent. When you’re gentle you can get something close to a Jazzmaster/ Jag, and it dives pretty well. The trem bar pops into place then you can wind it up to tighten the bar. It works regardless if you have the arm stiff or lose. Restringing is a little bit of a pain. If you want to keep your setup, you have to keep at least one string on at a time in order for it to stay in place. It’s really cool. I’ve been having a lot of fun with it!!

I just bought a Reverend Cross Cut from Sweetwater and have been extremely pleased. No issues with tuners being too tight. Sounds and plays great! I had Sweetwater ship mine with a Gator case. Uses the hum buckers that are "voiced" for p90 sounds and the guitar basically blows away my Fenders and mot as dark sounding as my Les Paul and USA Schecter PTs. The Reverend is a player for sure.

@@OldPeepaw Yeah, good point. I'm new to surf music and notice my single coil fender sounds wayyyyy better (through my Surfybear) than my Les Paul w/ Humbuckers. There's just a more 'pinchy', snappy sound w/ the Fender, it really gets that drip sound going where as the Gibson is a bit warmer and sounds a bit more calm and muted (for lack of better term). I suppose just about any solid body w/ quality single coil pickups will likely do the trick...

I really believe Reverend would do themselves a favor to provide the 3 pickups (and electronics) in a T-Style (with wilkinson bridge) and a S-Style (same bridge). And provide it with the Korina wood finish! That would be amazing. Instant classic. Those 3 p-90's (with bass contor and treble bleed)are the most versitle pickups I've ever experienced. And the jetstreams are also the most stay-in-tune guitars I've ever tried.

Got my first Reverend in about 2006. It was a mahogany bodied Club King RT. Great guitar, brilliant sound, but heavier than most Les Pauls, a real back breaker. In 2016 I sold that and got my second Reverend, a Double Agent W. It was never meant to be my main guitar but it has become my absolute go to and my favourite guitar ever. It is so versatile, so good to play, and looks super cool in my opinion, unique and original but not too weird or bizarre looking, which is a tricky balance to get right. I get asked about it all the time. I initially had a few issues with the finish flaking on the back of the neck, but Reverend were amazing about it and sent me a new one, even covering the shipping cost between USA and New Zealand for both the original and replacement guitars. Outstanding backup service. I've had no problems with the replacement and have had it for 8 years. I've never heard of anybody else having that issue. That guitar is the best purchase I ever made, I'm a Reverend fan for life.

Thanks for the new guitar Austin! I don’t mind thin neck profile, my very first guitar as a teenager was a “Royal” dreadnought for $99 with a baseball bat neck profile with super HIGH action that almost made me quit guitar. Getting a Washburn strat clone a year later with good action and a medium sized neck was so much more comfortable as a still relatively new player. Big fan of Reverend. Value is off the charts. I have not had any issues with their tuners or headstocks, all of the pickup combinations that I have are really quite good, and the fit and finish is always outstanding. My four are: Double Agent OG, P90 and HB; Kingbolt, RA HBs (basically rails); Charger 290 Limited, 2 P90s with a Bigsby (and it's a really good one); and Reeves Gabrels Sus, sustaniac system with a hot RA HB in bridge. Their P90s are among the best I've heard, smooth, quiet and have the necessary bite when you need it. The RA HBs are extremely articulate for a HB but have all the fullness as well. The bass contour control is fantastic. It's almost like a coil tap. Dialed all the way up, it's the fullest sound the pickup has; dialed down it's thinner like a tap. That you can blend it is the best feature. One of my guitar techs likened it to G&L's passive treble bass tone controls, which is also quite good.

While a lot of online channels seem to cater to the bedroom guitarist, there are those of us who are still trying to play out (despite lockdowns). Also like how you give a subjective report on how the neck feels to you. Thick, thin, narrow, wide, flat, etc... Can you please mention how you eq your amp or what ever you run? Even a simple mention of "eq is all set at noon, vs had to boost up the treble, etc..." Thanks again.

I have three Revs and have owned several others. I have a Charger HB that made me not use my LP studio anymore lol. The Club King is a super unique guitar. It's BIG. Korina Body with a spruce top. Filtertron pickups and a bigsby. It's a huge guitar but thinner than a Gretsch. It's very versatile! The last I have is a Six Gun HPP, which is humbucker in the bridge and the same P90s in your guitar in the middle and neck. It doesn't quite have the jangle of a low output strat, but it's great for live shows. They're by no means the perfect guitar, but I play out a ton and having a reverend on stage with me can cover everything from faux-pedal steel to super hairy overdrive (with the bass contour up). I also love that I don't have to worry about ruining a vintage guitar or something like my Suhr. I can sweat all over them and they'll be totally fine after a season of gigs. It seems like their target demographic is midwesterners in their 50s and 60s, but I think any professional guitarist will appreciate the on-stage efficacy of these guitars. If you're a Gibson or Fender die-hard, you may not think very much of these. I, personally, like them very much for the price. They stay in tune better and have more tonal charm than a mexican fender or a PRS SE in my opinion, and can very easily feel and play better than new Gibsons or Fenders you'd find in a guitar center.

I’ve liked all the Reverend’s I’ve tried. My only complaint has been the slim neck profiles I’ve encountered. If they made one with a .9 to 1.0 shape I’d definitely consider buying one. The locking pin tuners I’ve encountered you just need enough string to feed through hole and lock it down, then you don’t really have to turn the tuners too much to get to pitch.

Never say never ! You could be surprised... Try maybe an Airsonic (with s-shape holes in the body that make it resonate) or a Crosscut ( with noise-free pickup hybridation of P90s ).

You won't be disappointed. My Dad bought me one for Christmas, he said he researched and talked to several local musicians and guitar store owners, all of them said Reverends are made on par with Gibson and Fender. After having mine for only 3 months I truly believe it too haha

Sounds awesome though! You should try the Reeves Gabrels Spacehawk. That has a much nicer neck profile imo. Much more Les Paul-like. And a Bigsby system that works extremely well!

I just got a Charger 290 and it's simply amazing... already looking to purchase another in the coming months, probably the Gristlemaster. As you note the shape on this, while it looks cool is like a WolfGang and I'm not a fan of them. You might like the Charger though as the top horn is more LR/Tele like. I personally love the neck, very easy to play for long periods of time. Of course I love my 50s LP and Ibanez necks as well so I enjoy having different options.

Appreciate the honest feedback at the end. I’ll have to try it in person. I must admit that it sounds like a Baritone guitar. It’s like the BCC knob was built to allow for it. Thanks mate 👍

Outfield Ivy color is to die for. Love it. I own 5 Reverends and have had at least 15 over the years. Prefer the bolt on guitars, but Reverends are great across the board. I still prefer the guitars with serial# under 10,000 for some reason. The seem beefier and better sounding to me. That being said, I own a 2020 Flatroc that is tremendous.

I like the headstock. I didn't think much of it when I saw them in photos but when I see it in the (almost horizontal) position that it sits when playing, it looks really cool. Like a sleeker Fender headstock.

the bass contour is a bass frequency cut. the signal is passed through a capacitor that cuts bass, turning the knob up bypasses the capacitor giving you full bass, bass equals volume equals breaking your amp up more. thats how the bass contour works. its used in the pedal building world a ton

Ive wanted a Reverend for a couple years; however, Im one of them poor type persons. The Bass Contour on Reverends are super-cool; i think of them a bit like a Tone control in reverse: the tone control is a low-pass filter, and the Bass Contour is an High Pass filter. The tone cuts treble, the contour cuts bass. I love that design and finish; that guitar looks like i feel as an human!

Bonite is interesting stuff. There a lot of confusion as to what it actually is. Reverend says it artificial bone. It was used on skateboards in the 80’s and is occasionally used to this day. If the two are the same material, then it is a material originally called yorkite. Yorkite was developed by the same company that developed Forbon which is used to make pickup bobbins. Fender used it, Seymour Duncan uses it. Both are a vulconized fiber. So they are laminated layers of cellulose (the building blocks of plant matter) and plastic. Different kinds of plastic is used for each material. So, those different kinds of plastic are what separates Bonite from Forbon. That’s as far as I know. If anyone knows more or knows that I got it wrong, please, feel free to comment.

Those are pretty awesome, very unique and obviously of limited quantity… They’ve increased in price some, but I can really see them appreciating big-time over the years. The ones with the ‘eastpointe, Michigan’ necks are stellar. While I love newer Reverend’s too, they’re just very different animals… Love them both for different reasons.

I just bought the Flatroc/Bigsby (white) and it is far more beautiful in real life. I didn't really like the headstock until I got it. It's much more attractive in real life because it's smaller in person than I thought it was. I dare say, I like the Reverend headstock better than i like Fender's headstock. The guitar is top notch!!! I'm pleased to have it.
