MeiMei knows full well she needs a retirement plan and Lakan was a pretty good one, considering everything. She's not guaranteed to ever have another such opportunity while her clock is ticking and she has no way to know if something terrible won't happen to her tomorrow. Fengxian too was once a beautiful jewel, walking her head high, sought after by many and yet, she's now a madwoman, her body and mind ravaged by the syphilis, trapped in her bittersweet delirium in the muddy darkness of her forbidden room. MeiMei was Fengxian's apprentice in Fengxian's splendor times and she was her caretaker when her illness took everything from her, slowly eating her sanity and health. She has all the reasons to feel sad and to have mixed feelings about having stolen from herself what could have truly been her best opportunity in life for the sake of a woman she once respected but likely can't even recognize her anymore. Lingering feelings are but a needless hypothesis ;).

On top of that, Mao Mao had an unusual amount of freedom even for commoner women. Instead of inhibiting her…strange interests, he nurtured them. He taught her everything she knows, but still, that amount of enthusiasm for something so dangerous is something most parental figures would have discouraged, but he didn’t. Instead, he taught her the uses/benefits and nuances of natural substances, as well the dangers, and ( from what was known in that time period) WHAT made them dangerous. A parent who can ACTUALLY teach and bothers to do so in everyday life, makes him a good Dad indeed.🥹😭👍

Last two episodes the animation dipped and they spent all resources for this episode. It was beautifully done. The music was perfect. The shot composition was perfect. Mao's dance was beautiful, just wished I knew the lyrics while she was dancing. Lakan's VA did a great job. Though idk, in my heart, I still prefer the manga, quite a bit on executing Lakan and Fengxian's scene, visually that is. The courtesan's pride. Meimei showed it, Fengxian and Madam did, too. On Meimei's case, it helped others, though it was a bit painful for her. Fengxian's caused her pain and to others. Madam did too as her way of protecting Fengxian and Maomao. But see, Madam gave probably the grandest send off in Verdigris history to Fengxian. So to anyone, hating her, please don't. She just cares too much but is prideful in literally showing it.

I personally love Gran and always knew she was more than just a cranky old money loving lady. She cares for her girls as her own daughters, and is a good grandmother to Maomao. She was also a star courtesan and probably saw her share of things that made her who she is today.

Then she went to dress herself with a dancing gown that supposedly to wear on Meimei “graduation” yet because her plan succeeded and she wanted to pay respect to her mother, she decided to wear it now and do the graduation dance for her mother. She was a prideful daughter after all, glad to see her parent at least together in the end, even though she wouldn’t ever admitted hence the dance upon the wall.

The maneuvering for this year out come is amazing by all parties and how it connects themes to different stories was masterful. Fengxian is a woman like all the courtesans and concubines she has little direct control over her fate and trying to take control requires a lot of planning and involves a risk stories like Fuyou are so beautiful because while everyone wants 1. comfortable life, a 2. a happy life 3. a. fulfilling life, 4. with the person they truly love, those results they are incredibly rare. Many get none, some get one or two. Gyoukyuo respects the emperor but isn’t in love with him. Pairin in the only one of the 3 princesses who loves her job etc… The Fuyou storyline seems out of place until you contrast with Fengxian, and it gets even better when you take a couple steps back and examine how every woman in this show moves through the world.

I cried so hard last night because of this episode. It was heart warming ❤ I am so happy for Lakan and Fengxian though it too late but atleast Fengxian felt hapiness in her remaining days. And she was really dense when he implying he had feelings for her. He said I would make you my wife. But Maomao was In denial in the moments she has with him here. She against of falling in love because of her parents tragic love story which she keeps suggesting to hook up Jinshi with another girl. Which somehow got angry and started to choke her while forcefully kissing her. It definitely scared Maomao to be honest the way he showed his love was a bit you know, possessive. Which in the next novel she tried to avoid him. They soon later patch things up. But what he did kind of scared her.

Oh man, this clip reminds me to the first time I read the manga few years back, now, I'm not a really fond of romantic stories but, Fengxian and Lakan story actually made me balled my eyes out. Heck, even the earlier events in the story like the love story between the princess and her childhood friend, Lihua's actually trying to live again, Lishu and Ah Duo relationship are so well crafted stories and able to pull my heart string.

[SPOILERS AHEAD] It's not that she's dense. After all, she was mature enough to understand what drove the dancing courtesan of episode 3, or the blacksmith's wish for his three sons, or even the situation of her parents. It's more that she's doesn't care : she's not interested in romance in any way ( yet, seems pretty obvious something will happen between these two. ), and as of now, she's an apothecary and very passionate about her occupation. She's cool-headed but not dense.
