I think it's absolutely heartbreaking that you can hear him going back into the "Quasimodo" voice when he's singing. As he sings the other songs about his dreams and hopes, his voice is crystal clear, but in this one his voice becomes broken again, symbolizing that he gave up his hope.

@@glecyrances1874 actually that whole fanfiction about Enjolras and Grantaire is actually true, in the original novel, after Enjolras was shot 8 times, it said "Grantaire fell at his feet, as though struck by a thunderbolt" but in the original French, the term used in place of thunderbolt was "un coup de foundre", another way of describing love at first sight or Cupid's arrow, if you will. That's what understudies/alternates are for. Phantom does the same thing for the part of Christine (a regular understudy plus an alternate). Pre recording that E above high C at the end of the title song isn't unheard of either.
@jenniferhiemstra52288 жыл бұрын
+gray1730 only certain shows do or did this. As mentioned Phantom does it and so did Evita for whoever was playing Eva, and I think, but am not entirely sure, but Jekyll and Hyde might have for that duel role. Christine honestly isn't as difficult as it's made out to be, it's hard but not impossible 8 times a week, even if the entire role were actually sung. As for Eva and J/H...THOSE are inhumanly impossible to do 8 times a week.
@jenniferhiemstra52288 жыл бұрын
+gray1730 another show that might as well use this, but doesn't for whatever reason, is Wicked for Elphaba. That role is also a beast, and full time Elphaba's call out a lot, even the queen of steel vocal cords, Willemijn, has called out quite a bit.

The gargoyles in the movie are annoying and actually a a physical person. In the musical they are just in his head
@araw_buwan3 жыл бұрын
@@docflights I interpreted it differently. I still think that the gargoyles talking to him is a manifestation of his loneliness, and that they don't actually move in real life. The "you don't want to hurt me" and "yes you do" part of the musical makes more sense with that in mind, if you consider that Quasimodo has repressed anger from all the years of abuse that he took quietly from Frollo. When Frollo sings about how Esmeralda was just temptation, Quasimodo's patience and kindness just snaps. Esmeralda was his whole world, even for just a few days. This leads him to confront Frollo and eventually hold him up the balcony. When the gargoyles say "yes you do", it's actually Quasimodo saying "yes I do". Or at least that's how I interpret it.

Quasimodo, you must try to free yourself! The girl needs your help! Quiet! Go away. You're the only one who can save her now. You know what happens when I try to help! I only make things worse. You don't believe that! How do you know what I believe? What do you know of me? What do you know of all the things I feel? You're only made of stone. Who is it that you see, instead of seeing what I am for real? This twisted flesh and bone! Quasimodo, it wasn't your fault! You're a liar! With every new excuse you try out, you only make me want to cry out. Would that I were made of stone like you! You don't mean that! Just take some time to -- You give such good advice! So why has not one single word you've said been any help at all? Quasimodo! And you who sound so nice, The more your dreams and fancies fill my head, The farther that I fall! Shut my brain down! If I was senseless, I'd prefer it! Another gargoyle on this turret, Spitting rain down to the stones below! I've wasted my faith believing in saints of plaster, But the only one worth believing in was my master! He's the one who never lied. He told me it was cruel outside, He told me how I had to hide; His words were cold as stone, but they were true. Not like you. Take all the dreams you've sown, Take all your lies and leave me alone! All right, Quasimodo, we'll leave you alone. All right, Quasimodo, we'll trouble you no longer. You're right, Quasimodo, we're only made of stone. We just thought that you were made of something stronger. And now I'm on my own, Never again to wonder what's out there. Let it remain unknown! And my one human eye Will ever more be dry Until the day I die, As if I Were made of stone!
