They collabed with the Oak Ridge Boys, Lee Greenwood, Kenny Rogers, Alabama also. Don asked Home Free to join him when he got his star on the sidewalk & had HF sing a little snippet of this. How cool is that!! 🥰🥰

It was Don McLean that reached out to them to do this for the 50th anniversary of the song, not the other way around. A great honor from the original artist of such an iconic song. And he was not the only one Kenny Rogers contacted them too a couple of years ago for a collaboration. They sang with quite a few big names.

The reason they are in the picture boxes is they recorded this during quarantine from their own homes and then compiled them at the studio! Don Mclean actually asked HOME FREE to record this 50th anniversary remake of his song! Turns out he is a huge HOME FREE fan! This is an 8 minute song so everyone in the band had a solo! GREAT SONG! DON MCLEAN sounds the same as he did 50 years ago! PHENOMENOL!!! THANKS for covering my guys!!! Great job!

This video was during quarenteen and all parts was done separately and was edited together. This re-make of this song was made for 50th anniversity of the original song. I heard that Adam Rupp was so out of breath that he was very light headed at the end of the song. Chris Rupp the one that wore hats left Home Free in 2016. Adam Chance who sang the 1st verse replaced him. This is very tastefully well done re-make of an absolutely great classic. You gentlemen really need to take your uncle out to dinner for his suggestion and you all have a great day

Chance took the first lead. He's ostensibly a baritone, but he can cover bass and he clearly has a nice tenor range.

Only the Home Free men can upgrade a cover and honor the original artist at the same time. Another homfredian gem. I wish they'd had a chance to sing with Roy Orbison. Maybe Home Free will get a chance to sing "Maybe I'm Amazed" or "Let It Be" with Sir Paul McCartney before we lose him, too. Nobody else could do it justice.

Home Free has a behind-the-scenes making of this video on their channel. Don McLean reached out to Home Free for this collaboration for the 50th anniversary of the song. Kenny Rogers, Alabama, Lee Greenwood, and the Oak Ridge Boys have all done videos of their classic songs with Home Free. Their original song Dreamer pays homage to the country artists that came before them.

Quote from Don McLean “Recording American Pie with Home Free was something that I never imagined I would have done,” says Don McLean. “My manager brought me the idea and I was like ok, but I have never collaborated with anyone before and why would I do this. Then I heard their vocal harmonies and it reminded me of The Jordanaires and then found out they don’t sing at all with instruments. What happened in the studio was great, but what happened when they put it all together was magic! I am honored to have worked with these guys and to win, not just one, but three national Telly awards for the music video is just great!!!”

These guys are so multi talented it's ridiculous. Each of them can step up and do whatever needs done and do it great. They always pay respect to whatever legend they work with and legends have respect for them as well. How cool is that! As far as I'm concerned, Home Free can do no wrong. And Don's voice, gees, he's still got it. Great reaction, you guys.

Don McLean, the singer of the nearly nine-minute-long hit "American Pie," has held the record for longest song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart since 1972. So Adam is crazy beatboxing for that length of time on this cover! 😳 Go Chance and these guys are so talented!

Don is 75 years old now and released the song back in 1971. Actually, Don's manager contacted Home Free to put something together for American Pie's 50th Anniversary. Home Free also was invited at Don's star reveal on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year and Home Free sang a bit of this song at that reveal. Also, all of them including Don won Telly awards for this video.

Since you love Robs voice so much, you should do "Catch me If You Can". He has the lead of the song. If more than one member of the group is interested in the lead parts, they will each sing it and then they will decide who did it best. In the case of Catch Me If You Can, Rob got to the studio first and sang it. The other guys heard it and basically said, "no we can't top that. We aren't even going to try." And he gave it his own unique, bluesy touch...perfect!

Guys, this was the song of my generation. Every schoolkid knew the words by heart or you were called moron or something else. On all field trips, or band trips, we all sang this song. This was filmed in February 2021 and Don was 76....he is now 77 of course and he stopped singing professionally a few years ago....so to do this is a GREAT honor for Home Free. Great reaction...by the way the 1st gentleman, is Adam Chance known in the group just as Chance to avoid confusion with the beatboxer. Chance replaced Chris Rupp when he left in May 2016

'The day the music died' was 3 February 1959 when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper were all killed in a plane crash. The song is full of cultural references and I think there's a video on YT showing what each lyric means, for instance, ' I met a girl who sang the blues, and I asked her for some happy news' is believed to be Janis Joplin.

The first Home Free singer is Chance (Adam Chance). There are two Adams in the group, Adam Rupp (the beat boxer) and Adam Chance (baritone). People call him Chance to distinguish him from Adam Rupp. You two are probably too young to recognize the theme used in this video but what is being portrayed here is what we called a nick knack shelf. Almost everyone had at least one of these in their homes and they would have little figurines or photos in each of the little squares. So for those of us who remember these old day this is really a nice concept for this song.

Love this remake of this classic song. Can't believe it came out 50 years ago. Don McLean still has a good voice for his age. And love hearing all the guys take a turn in a verse. Poor Adam had to do such a long stretch of beatboxing but he nailed it. Think the song is about 8 min. long. Don McLean just received his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame recently & Home Free was invited to sing a portion of this song there. What an honor for them.

One of the many things I like about Home Free is how respectful they are to other artists. When they sang with Texas Hill, they made sure that Texas Hill members were each introduced by name and part they play in their band. When Don McLean they highlighted him and treated both him and his song respectfully.

here is a snippet of the interview with Don McLean after doing the collab with Home Free: “Recording ‘American Pie’ with Home Free was something that I never imagined I would have done,” McLean says in a statement. “My manager brought me the idea and I was like ‘Okay, but I have never collaborated with anyone before, and why would I do this?’ Then I heard their vocal harmonies and it reminded me of The Jordanaires, and then found out they don’t sing at all with instruments. What happened in the studio was great, but what happened when they put it all together was magic!” So, I would say he was VERY pleased with the outcome of this video. Also...they won 3 Telly awards for this collab: The singers all won a Gold Telly in the Best Use of Animation category, a Silver Telly in the Music Video of the Year category, and another Silver Telly in the Best Remote Production category. Adam Chance, otherwise known as just Chance because Adam Rupp is already called Adam,so Chance goes by his middle name...he's the guy in the hat and the guy to take first lead from the Home Free guys.Chance used to sing Bass in another a Capella group (Street Corner Symphony,I think is its name) before he came and took Chris Rupps vocal position in Home Free. And yes,Chris is Adam Rupps brother, but he is no longer in the group.he has a solo career that is pretty good though.this guy in the hat is Chance.😄

This song was based on a plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Richie Valence and one other artist. In fact, Walen Jennings was supposed to be on that plane but he gave up his seat for that third guy. Towards the end he talks about a girl who sang the blues, asking if it would be ok, she just turned and walked away. That girl was Janis Joplin. So this is about his life at every turn formed by music until those people died, it was until the day the music died. They were the end of an era. The end of a wonderful life left to the past. A brilliant poem in song. A masterclass in song writing.

You guys are so great with your reactions!! Thanks for doing our favorite guys. This classic song was from when I was in my late teens. It covered the period of time many of us still have trouble remembering, Vietnam and the protests against the war and all that went on over the young men and women that were drafted and went to war. (My finance was there 14.5 months and it was a nightmare!) Anyway, Don said he wanted to have HF do this with him as a new upbeat version because he said "They understand harmonies". What a compliment! And there is a behind-the-scenes of this. Probably on their KZbin channel where they have a lot of the behind-the scenes which are super fun. You would enjoy hearing Don tell their great producer make me sound good. lol! And there are interviews of Don online talking about all the reasons he wrote this, Buddy Holly's death when Don was a boy, then losing his own dad, Vietnam and all that surrounded it, the JFK assassination and Bobby Kennedy and MLK. A tough time to live in the 60s for sure! Thanks again!

I really look forward to your reactions to these guys and you know now they will always hit the sweet spot musically and will never disappoint. Keep up the good work guys! I always look forward to your Home Free reactions and you never disappoint. I would suggest End of the Road. Rob kills it! Take Me Home Country Roads is another tremendous one. Then check out Tim's Doo-Wop song, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/ Stay. I'll wait here.😉 🍿 🍺

That was a great reaction. ^_^ One other similar collab that comes to mind is Pentatonix with Dolly Parton covering Jolene.

You mentioned how seldom performers did a cover along with the original singer. Try Pentatonix with Dolly Parton doing "Jolene" !!!!!

Adam nearly passed out when they were recording this. Takes a lot of control to hold a perfect beat for that long!

The song was actually inspired by Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valenze and the Big Bopper. They all 3 were killed in a plane crash.. That was "the day the music died" I used to not like this song very much but once I figured out some of the context and hearing this version, I kinda like it now. This was an awesome version of it. 😊

You young men are so awesome, I enjoy watching your channel. Rob’s voice sounds so smooth like velvet. Chance started with the lead and his voice is awesome. He can do bass through tenor. Austin can sing tenor to high tenor. Tim can go lower than bass lol, and go to tenor. Adam our beatboxer is so awesome, each one of them could all have solo careers. But together they are all amazing.. Thank you 🙏 🎼🦋🎵💕🎶

Guy in the hat is Adam Chance, called Chance. You really should react to some Chance leads. “I Can’t Outrun You” is 5 part harmony and hauntingly beautiful. Chance also directed the video. “Cover Me Up”, and let the video play out as there is a surprise at the end. For fun there is “Workin’ for a Livin’”. Complete with a harmonica solo from Adam.

If you want to hear Adam Rupp sing, he has a short solo in 'How Great Thou Art'. In the middle of the song, he sings the bridge insert of 'It is Well With My Soul', another hymn. His range is Tenor II. There are rumors that he is taking time to do more voice training. This leads me to speculate that he may take off on his own solo verse in one of these songs. His voice in HGTA is good, but not as dynamic as the rest of the group so . . . I wouldn't put anything past these guys. Also their colab' with the Oakridge Boys on 'Elvira' shows how much these guys are in awe of the artists they partner with. Also Don, like the savvy businessman he is, refuses to fully explain what the lyrics are talking about. He said it keeps this song relevant in perpetuity as people continue to decipher the puzzle the words create.

Hey, Nani Brothers, us Home Fries are really enjoying your reactions to our beloved band!! You're right, this was a very moving performance. I seem to recall Tim saying in an interview that they had originally reached out to Don McLean to do a collaboration, but nothing came of it at that time. Then (I think it was several years later) Don contacted them to do American Pie with him for the 50th anniversary of the song. The result is one for the record books!
