Considering Don got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame following them doing this, and he invited Home Free to attend and even perform, I think that's the answer to what Don thinks of HF and their talents!

Adam did this all in 1 take (if I remember right) and almost passed out. This was done during quarantine. Don was in Tennessee so him, Tim, and Austin did it at the studio there Chance recorded his on CA, Rob went into Darren Rusts studio in MN, and Adam R recorded his at home in his studio. When Don got his Hollywood Star last year he invited Home Free (they did a shirt verse of this) and Weird Al. Don has said he's almost sang Weird Al's version of this. Don's kids love Weird Al's version. If you haven't heard it you should listen to it. Also, it's been said that Don wants to collaborate with Home Free Again. I hope they can 🙂🙂

When Don sang it, everything that happened was relatively new, and it was more in memoriam. When Home Free sings it, it is more nostalgia. It's a difference of time and perspective. I love both, and I was around when the original hit the radios.

Hey Larry, missed you covering Home Free. Trust me they are more than "country music"...yes they do cover that genre but they are so much more. Don reached out to them, to help him celebrate his ICONIC song's 50th anniversary (this was released Oct 24th, 1971) and Don had a big hand in the video making. The video boxes were his idea & they used family films from his childhood, so they are very personal to Don himself.

I second the vote that I have missed you doing more HomeFree. They definitely are not just a country group. Theirs so much more to them with all the different genres. But even the country songs are always an upgrade over the originals. These are very talented musicians who don't need instruments because they have Adam and Tim who can fill in whatever is needed sound wise. Please continue down the HomeFree road .I'll bet they grow on you like they do most people. They also have great collaborations with other stars. Thanks for the great reaction. 🦋🥀🦋🥀🦋

Love this remake of this classic song. Can't believe it came out 50 years ago. Don McLean still has a good voice for his age. And love hearing all the guys take a turn in a verse. Poor Adam had to do such a long stretch of beatboxing but he nailed it. Think the song is about 8 min. long. Don McLean just received his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame recently & Home Free was invited to sing a portion of this song there. What an honor for them. "American Pie" pays tribute to the loss of 3 young legends who died so young (Buddy Holly, Richie Valens & The Big Bopper). A lot of references in the song are made to many artists from the early days of music including Elvis, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Byrds & others.

to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the release of the song, McLean allowed a tweak to “American Pie.” He’s featured in the new release from Home Free, the a cappella country group. McLean told CMT: “I have only collaborated with Garth Brooks on a live recording of ’American Pie’ in the past, and it was released on one of his ‘live’ albums. With the song celebrating 50 years, my manager asked me about recording the song with Home Free. Any great song with a melody lends itself to a great a cappella rendition, and I truly believe this recording is proof of that. Home Free reminds me so much of The Jordanaires, whom I worked with years ago.

HF are definitely professionals. By this time, HF had already partnered with Charlie Daniels, The Oak Ridge Boys, Kenny Rogers, Alabama, Lee Greenwood, and now Don McLean. All idols of theirs. They really know how to allow and make the original artist 'shine' by always being so respectful with their arrangements. They say they always felt blessed to be able to partner with "The Greats". We Fries are very proud! They've also been invited to sing the National Anthem twice at the Minnesota Vikings games (since that was HF's original home and 2 of the members still live there). There are videos out there for all of them except Charlie Daniels; they never got to do a video with him as he fell sick during that time. They've also been invited to the CMA Awards; not to perform though (and are members), have also been invited to Nashville's huge CMA Fest for several years in a row, and invited to The Ryman and the Grand Ole Opry multiple times. Those last three are huge honors because they get to sing among Nashville's royalty and are very tough gigs to get. I also never liked country, just like you, but HF has changed my world! 😉 They have introduced me to other bands that I truly love today, but would never have considered before. Keep listening... you'll see what I mean.

Might have been a fund raiser, Don played for free. It happened somewhat like that. I’ll never forget this detail: My gym packed full of my small town friends and families quietly singing Babylon. With the memories images, I think there is a connection somehow in there. I noticed behind Adam (when you said the images were weird) it is an anatomy diagram of the mouth and throat - basically the mechanics of beatboxing. I am going to have to go back through it and see if there are any other subtle connections in the memory boxes. Also at the end, the background vocals make it sound like a prayer or hymn. The respect is palatable. I know I had heard that Tim had reached out to Don a few years ago about doing the song and he had given his approval but for whatever reason, Home Free didn't do it then. So when the 50th anniversary of the song came up, Don contacted them about doing it now. And magic happened. When Don got his star, he requested Weird Al and Home Free to be there.

They do outstanding covers of "God Bless the USA" with Lee Greenwood, and "Children Go Where I Send Thee" with Kenny Rodgers shortly before he passed away. We get it. Most Country is all about drinking, partying, fornicating, dogs, cheating and revenge. Doesn't help that the sleazy pop culture has taken it over. HF does a great job of reviving a lot of the old classics that made country amazing. Don invited them to do the 50th anniversary edition because he trusted them to do it justice. He sang the main parts then let them fill in around him. If you haven't seen Elvira with the Oak Ridge Boys, that one is also a classic from the 80s that I grew up on. HF has such a respect for the original artists. Look up Star of Bethlehem and Christmas in Dixie where they team up with Alabama and Oak Ridge Boys. They also did The Gambler with Kenny Rogers and Dolly Pardon was thrilled to let them do To the Moon and Back and they absolutely blew us away with it. You have to check it out.

With their own twist, but still keeping the respect and appreciation for Don McLean, Home Free has made another incredible version of it!! ❤ But even after all those years Don McLean is still so great👏

Oh, you really need to watch/react to “Austin Brown & Tim Foust sing ‘My Maria’ in the Backyard”. Oh, such BEAUTIFUL harmonies!

Larry, they just dropped a great cover of Garth Brooks song "Aint Goin Down Til The Sun Comes Up" but they had to preview it on their Facebook page. Simply amazing.

All these people keep going on and on about how great PTX is but look how man STARS have asked HF to collab with them on their songs. Don McClean, The Oak Ridge Boy,, Alabama and Lee Greenwood just to name a few.

Great reaction. Don asked HF to do with him as he said "no group understands harmonies better then they do" and boy do we agree! He also wanted it to be a bit more pepped up and their great producer/arranger Daren Rust made it all happen! There's a good behind the scenes of them doing this with Don. Don said he doesn't sing as good anymore (he's wrong about that!) so asked Daren to make him sound good. This whole thing is special. I came from this era when it was done, lived thru the horrible Vietnam war and all the protests and anger and disrespect to the young soldiers coming home. And the '60s were just awful with assassinations of JFK, Bobby Kennedy and MLK, Jr. '60s were an awful time. This whole thing was done so clever with all the pictures on the side. Knew you'd love this one! Thanks.
