My generation was so wounded by the Vietnam War. When our guys came home the only help and support they got was from their brothers in arms.

As noted, this was written by Mark Knopler of Dire Straits and sung by Dire Straits in 1984 in response to the Falkland War between the UK and Argentina. The Finnish a capella group Club For Five arranged the song for a capella (and gave it a heavy bass line). Club For Five graciously allowed Home Free to use their arrangement with Tim Foust (bassist for Home Free) giving the arrangement the echoes. Excellent reaction.

Home Free did this one in late 2021, a time when we all so needed this message. They wrote in the video's description: "The meaning of “Brothers in Arms” rings true across more than just when we’re at war overseas, but when we’re fighting amongst ourselves. When political and other divisions split us, we have to take a step back and remember that we always have more in common with each other than we have that is different. And we need to see all of our fellow human beings as the brothers and sisters we are, so we can live in a more harmonious society ❤"

But that has nothing to do with Memorial Day. We shouldn’t dilute the memory of those who have died in service of our nation by blanketing it as less than giving everything. Save general patriotic thoughts for every day other than Memorial Day.

Bruce I appreciate you expressing the importance of the true meaning of Memorial Day. As the wife of a veteran and mother of an active duty military son I couldn't agree more. For me this video shows families working hard becoming citizens and fulfilling the American dream we represent to the world. The sacrifices of our military makes are to preserve our freedom as Americans. Honor to all our veterans on this important day of rememberance.

I always liked the Dire Straits version, but I only got really interested in this song through Home Free. (Although I have to be honest I think Dire Straits guitar playing is phenomenal) Yes, this version of Home Free will send shivers through your entire body! This is so emotional. Beautifully sung by Tim and Chance, but the background and harmony of Adam, Rob and Austin is also so beautiful. It looks like a choir or actually a kind of church organ sounds. And the whole setting of the video is just amazing. Simple but with so many details that makes it so profound

As a combat vet never feel sympathy for any of us. We knew what we signed up for and carried out that mission. The hardest problem for vet is when you return and the adjustment. Every vet salutes those of us who gave everything, no matter the war/conflict/police action, all I would ask is that everyone understand the stress a vet has once he gets out. Vets don't see color or faith, they see there brother that they fight beside and the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, which we stand for.

Sir--you have just honored my dad, who raised us by these same standards. He was in one of the first troops to go overseas in WW2. He was part of the mechanized troops (which included the medical teams) that directly followed Patton's troops. At barely 18, he witnessed the things that Marxism does to people, and as we grew up, we learned a lot about how to be good citizens, and how to stand up for the country in which we live, and WHY we should. Looking back at his life, and the (drinking and depression) problems he faced at times after returning home, then marrying my mom, then having four kids to raise--all the while still living with the ghosts of that time at war--I would say that these days he would have been considered to be a heavy victim to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Nobody had named it, back then, but looking back, I can still see it in my dad's eyes, and in the eyes of others of the same age. I'm VERY proud of my dad...always have been. I wish, though, that he had been able to live past the 45 years of life that he did--looking more like he was 85 when he passed away. War definitely takes its toll--even after you've been out of it for a long time. Thank you, Daddy, for raising your four children right, and to know the differences between good leadership and bad. We miss you.

Let's Give eme Something to Talk About (the musician) 3. Just Like That, her recent grammy winner (the writer). Sharing these with Allie would be fun too. Particularly the second one. You are right. This song is about the horrors of war, "we are fools to make war with our brothers in arms". Home Free understands the message very clearly when Tim says we of diverse cultures have more in common than we have differences. I enjoyed your reaction to not only the message, but also to the majestic harmonies. That bridge between verses makes your bones rattle, and the notes at the end could well be a pipe organ playing Amen.
