Rob was really leery about doing this. He had the opera training and knew what he needed to do here. Austin has a lot of musical theater training and has been in productions. Austin really wanted everyone to know what his bandmate brother could do. They all seem to have real affection for one another. It translates into their work.

Rob was classically trained in college. He could have gone far in opera but I’m glad he wert down the path with Home Free. Austin could sing the phone book and make it sound amazing.

People say "he could have gone far i nopera" but the fact remains that he didn't, because the effort involved in hunting down auditions for the chorus, where you get paid peanuts, while keeping your technique in good repair every single day, just gets too much for most who graduate from voice training. There's also the point that heavy Italianate voices like Robs are not so useful in other genres/fields except the old warhorses of Puccini and Verdi (which are themselves becoming less popular). Another reactor with a background in opera and years of experience by contrast said that Austin could have made a fortune - with the implication that he still might - simply because his voice is more versatile.

Your reaction is pretty much exactly like the rest of us the 1st time watching this. Austin kept begging Rob to do this. Rob finally agreed but only if Austin joined him. Rob had not sung opera in about 15 yrs. He's still got it that's for sure! ❤❤❤

In Tim’s recent chat with opera singer Peter Barber, he said Rob took a month to get back in shape for this kind of singing. Peter said Austin sounds like a music theater singer, but Rob sounds like someone with real opera skills. And this does reflect their training. I’m often surprised how different Rob’s voice sounds depending on whether he’s singing country, opera, hip hop or gospel/R&B

Peter thought that Rob could have had a legit career in opera. I have yet to find a reactor that was not impressed with Rob's voice. Is he a Pavarotti? No; there was only one Pavarotti. But Rob definitely has the ability to sing opera, and to sing it well.

I have never been a big fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy.

Yeah. Two of the five reasons why Home Free has a long history of making beautiful music together -- Rob and Austin! The other 3, Adam, Chance and Tim, make them my favorite vocal band. Others in their comments will give you info about their backgrounds, and about this amazing operatic number. I'm just here to heap praise on these guys, and on your powerful reaction. Home Free is not just country music. You should watch their rendition of "Mayday". Nessun Dorma means "Let no one sleep" and is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot and one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera. To marry the princess, Turandot, her suiters must correctly answer 3 riddles or be beheaded. Calaf, one of the suitors, answers correctly but she does not want him. So he gives her a second chance: guess his name by dawn and she does not have to marry him and she can behead him OR don't guess his name and she must marry him. She has all of her servants staying up all night to determine his name to no avail. "Let no one sleep". So, this song is him singing of his upcoming victory.

Austin went on to say he thought he been okay but that Rob had been fantastic. I love the way they support each other! I don't know if you've heard Austin's song "Hers Ain't Mine" (it's audio only on his channel) - Tim is singing the bass on it. Tim & Austin also do fund-raising for at risk veterans.

Translation of lyrics I found online: Italian Text Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma! Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle! Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincerò! vincerò, vincerò! English Translation Nobody shall sleep!... Nobody shall sleep! Even you, oh Princess, in your cold room, watch the stars, that tremble with love and with hope. But my secret is hidden within me, my name no one shall know... No!...No!... On your mouth, I will tell it when the light shines. And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!... (No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.) Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

If they were to release an album of them singing opera it would be in heavy rotation at my house. I don't know if you've ever seen the video of Freddie Mercury singing with Montserrat Caballe considered the best soprano ever. Freddie wrote a song and they sang it and it is truly magical. The song called Barcelona was to be the theme song in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. So Freddie wrote a song titled Barcelona. It was recorded in 88 because it needed to be submitted to the Olympic committee well well before 92. The video of their performance is from 88. In learning about cutbacks story it seems that Montserrat was the first person Freddie had told about him having AIDS. This was long long before he ever told anybody. Freddie told her that he would not be around to sing it with her at the Olympics. And sadly she passed in 91. They did use the song but it had to be from a video. The three videos to watch our Barcelona, Golden Boy, how can I go on

Watching this for about the 100th time, I noticed that the suit Austin is wearing in this video is the same one all the band wore in the Home Free cover of Crazy (by Willie Nelson, made famous by Patsy Cline). Austin sings it as the lead in the same key that Patsy did which is difficult for a male voice. Home Free never, ever, disappoint!

Wow, wow and again wow. This is insane. This is extremely good. Fantastic. Both are doing great. But Rob, I'm perplexed. His voice is just magical and so rich Chills just ran through my body. It flows into my heart. He will be able to stand with the greatest of opera singers. It's not often that I listen to songs by opera singers 5 times and more in a row. But here it is. Of course I hope that both will always continue to do Home Free, but I wouldn't think it wrong that such "trips" are made more often. Opera, country, ballads, soul etc. I think anything is possible..

Opera dialog and stories are often quite silly, written in a time when other countries and history were much less well known. They were chosen as an excuse for weird stories and exotic costumes, the fantasy/sci-fi of the time. People who love opera are tolerant, even fond of the goofiness. It’s all a setting for the real centerpieces, the series of arias. Some of these are breathtakingly beautiful, and each singer brings their own unique tone and style. It’s especially powerful because the stories, while not realistic, always include powerfully emotional human archetypes: tragic lovers, evil villains, loving family, war, and so on. I actually prefer not knowing what the players are actually saying/singing much of the time. Italian is a beautiful language for singing, but correct pronunciation is difficult. Non-Italian opera singers spend a shocking amount of time and effort in learning correct pronunciation in addition to all the specialized singing training. Many Italians have praised Rob and Austin, especially Rob, for their pronunciation. Isn’t Rob’s full, trained operatic voice something? So powerful, flexible, warm and rich. I love the friendship behind Austin’s coaxing him into doing this.

Great reaction! 😀 Though I love both Austin's (musical theater training) and Rob's (opera) voices, and I love the song, I think you might like to follow up with Dan Vasc's version--especially since he speaks Italian correctly (his mother's heritage, I believe). The one thing I don't particularly like about Rob's and Austin's version, is that Austin is not especially good about rolling his Rs. Rob does OK. Other than that, I think they did a great job with this song. Dan, on the other hand is highly proficient with the language--including the rolling of Rs. 😀 Also, he captures the pure pathos of the song. Back to Austin's prowess, though, you might also want to react to this: "Bring Him Home" (from Les Misérables--Video by Heidi Rancour, 12/02/2015) Just type that line in as a search, ON KZbin, and the correct video will come up. The rest of the group (except Adam Rupp) is there, as well (with Chris, not Chance).

And you now know why opera is cool. All that beautiful music is telling some of the most messed up stories you'll ever encounter. The popular aria 'O Mio Babino Caro' is literally a teenage girl throwing a tantrum because her father doesn't approve of her boyfriend. Check out The Three Penny Opera sometime. You'll certainly recognize one of the songs. In the German version it's 'Mackie Messer' or 'Mack the Knife'. Yes it's that song and it's not upbeat or done to a swing rhythm.
