This is a tribute to the artist Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh almost certainly suffered from bipolar disorder and is believed to have super manic episodes and then deep depression. Many art historians also believe Van Gogh was schizophrenic. His art was not well-received in his life time, so he never achieved much financial success. Van Gogh cut off one of his ears and eventually committed suicide. His paintings are now worth millions of dollars. "Starry Night" is one of Van Gogh's most famous works.

So beautifully done. Don sounds great for 78! Love the boys harmonies. They were standing in front of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings. He suffered from mental illness and killed himself. Yes, they made a painting of them like Vincent would have. So clever. Love it! Good one!🥰

My hubby of 52 years is Vincent and is a painter. VanGogh's story is worth a read. He suffered greatly from depression that shows in some of his artwork. Vincent aka Starry Starry Night is poetry put to music.

Don McLean doesn't write lyrics - he puts poetry to music. This is such a beautiful song, beautifully sung. Home Free's harmonies are incomparable and they're always true to an artist's conception of their song.

What led Don to writing this song was…..he had read a book on the true life of Vincent VanGogh …..he was so taken about him, he wrote this Beautiful, Sad song 😢😔💕‼️💕

Truly phenomenal! What a voice Don McLean still has! Wow. And of course Austin also sang great, but Rob's voice is just perfect for this song. His voice so warm, soft as silk and full of emotion. The quiet background vocals and guitar playing complete it for me. It's the same song as my youth, but with the Home Free twist it's something different. A beautiful song where I, of course, as a Dutch person, know the sad history of the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh well. I lived not far from his birthplace for a while. If I could, I would have given Don McLean and Home Free a bouquet of sunflowers in memory of Vincent. The sunflower one of his most famous paintings 🌻...... 💖 💖💖💖💖💖

All the paintings in the background of the video were paintings by Vincent VanGogh, the last one was his "Starry Starry Night" that the song was titled for. VanGogh was man that suffered from what we now know as Bi-Polar and Schizophrenia, he was very poor and his artistic genius was never recognized while he was alive. He cut off his ear when he was suffering from a bi-polar episode. One can only imagine how horrible his life was at a point in time where people weren't educated or aware of mental illnesses and there was no treatments.

Thank you for an outstanding reaction. I liked that you stopped the song when you realized that might be speaking about a real person, and took a moment to get sense of the background. I was impressed with how well you perceived the meaning of the song, knowing virtually nothing about Van Gogh, you we're able to make some very insightful comments. If you ever have an opportunity to see it, there's an excellent movie about Van Gogh called Lust For Life, starring Kirk Douglas. The movie was released in 1956 - far, far, before your time - but it's worth a look if you can find it streaming somewhere. on

Vincent Van Gogh did a whole series of sketches and paintings of people. They were mostly poor people. He unfortunately committed suicide. This is a good rendition. Rob rises to the occasion.
