No instruments except their voices, the baritone Chance was doing the jaw harp at the beginning and end. The beatboxer is Adam Rupp and he’s just incredible.

This song is American Bluegrass (the genre), and yes, all the parts are done with the human voice. If you want to be blown away by sheer layers of sound, try "Do You Hear What I Hear". Just excellent.

This song is possibly the very first Kentucky Bluegrass song ever and may go back to the very early 1700's when the very first settlers came to Kentucky. It is so old than no one knows for sure how old it is or who wrote it just that it is possibly the very first country/Kentucky bluegrass song.

Nope, no harmonica. In the live version Austin joins Adam not playing harmonica. The beginning of this was looped but that's it, it's all them. Tim Foust (bass) is from Texas, Austin Brown (tenor) Georgia and Adam Chance (goes by Chance - baritone) Alabama, Rob Lundquist (tenor) is from Minnesota and Adam Rupp (Percussion, beatboxer) is from Minnesota. It is all natural. Tim has a 5 octave range from very low to extremely high and kills it. Adams Rupp is a freak of nature in percussion and beatboxing. There are videos here on KZbin of him doing what he does. I believe you would be amazed. They were on the Sing Off season 4, you could check out each performance with the judge's comments. Don't know if you are familiar with them but Shawn Stockman of 'Boyz to Men' is one of the judges and Jewel if you know who she is (country singer). They are such great entertainers and their humor is infectious. You will catch that in some of their videos. HF was just in Australia at CMC Rock 2019 15-17 March 2019 Ipswich, Queensland.

The "jaw harp" in the beginning, is Adam Chance (usually just known as Chance, since Adam Rupp is the beatboxer, so it avoids confusion). Adam (Rupp) does the harmonica SOUND. When they present this live, Austin (the main soloist with the red hair and the beige/brown hat & brown vest) walks over, picks up a mic, clearly showing that he is not holding a harmonica, either, and joins in a harmonized mouth organ duet with Adam...so utterly fantastic!!! The jaw harp sound, by the way, is looped, because Chance has a hard time keeping it up for very long. "Man of Constant Sorrow" (with 'harmonica' duet by Adam and Austin) kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5rOfKptbLOZbtk If you're interested in seeing their vocal ranges graphically presented, I created and have uploaded a .png "chart" showing where they all fit. I included Chris Rupp since he was the founder of the group back in 2000, when he and his brother Adam Rupp were still in college. In 2016, Chris moved on to solo work and to an instrumental band that he named 7th Ave Band. The chart can be seen on my website, at the following link. I introduced the chart itself, with several brief paragraphs, and instructions for seeing the (downloadable) picture larger. lindawing.net/2019/03/20/home-free-vocal-ranges-chart/ There is a video that showcases the six of them together: "What Child is This?" (Christmas carol, sung by Chris Rupp & Home Free...the only time with both Chris & Chance--TIM GOES LOW & HIGH) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmrZfGlneteInJI I gave you a couple of other links to check out, in another reaction. Thought I'd add a couple more, that I think you'll like, as well. "We Just Disagree" (by Dave Mason--Cover by Home Free) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bai6mq2OnqeDpaM "Misty Mountains" (from The Lord of the Rings--Cover by Tim Foust & Peter Hollens--I wouldn't want to come upon the Tim at the end of this one, in a back alley or a dark forest, to be sure!) kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5OVeYVqbNOje7c

The beatboxer does most sounds,(he sounds like a drumkit, and the harmonica is all him, I've seen them do this live on stage.) but the others always pitch in their sounds too, Bass guy makes bass guitar sounds in some cases, and the Didgeridoo or mouth harp type sound at the beginning and end of this video is Chance their baritone bass in the back beside the beatboxer. 3 of the 5 are from the south. Texas (bass Tim) Alabama(Chance) and Georgia (High tenor lead Austin). The other 2 are from Minnesota, (Adam beatboxer, and Rob- Bearded Tenor) where the group originated.

I've seen that you display The St Andrew's/The Flag of Scotland in your background. In America, we have a great many Scots or Scots Irish Americans. They were mostly isolated in The Appalachian Mountains, while many migrated south & west, & of course all over The USA. In Appalachia where I'm from, most emigrants were from The Ulster Plantation, Scotland, many highland Scots, after the Highland Clearances, & many prisoners from The Last Jacobite uprising in 1746. 98% were extremely poor indentured servants, serving terms of 7 to 14 years. Since they were a late culture emigrating to America, most all the good farm lands were already taken, so they never received their reward for the indentured terms of owning land once they fulfilled their contract. Most squatted on the border land of The Appalachian Mountains, & so disobeyed King George 2nd's order. That land belonged to The French & Native Americans. They lived in heavily guarded & fortified fortresses, all through Appalachia then, to protect themselves against Native American attacks. They lived in tightly knit clans & kept their culture isolated. They took in run away slaves & there was much intermarriage between ethnicities. If a person could survive the harsh dangerous frontier, then they were accepted in their clan family systems. In the beginning of The Revolutionary War, most were neutral. It wasn't untill 1780, when Gen Cornwallis gave Lt Col Tarleton(a violent & vicious tyrant)command in Western North Carolina, Tarleton & his legion mercilessly attacked a retreating regiment of Patriot Militia in "The Slaughter of Waxhaw". Tarleton's men gave the surrendering Patriots no quarter, & killed every single wounded man or POW. Him & his men also raped & killed women & children, even those who were loyalist/torries. After word of this atrocious misconduct spread throughout the back country, all able bodied men joined The Patriot Militia, & vowed to never allow any of their neighbors to be viciously slaughtered again. War is horrible, but at that time, Officer's were gentleman, & all their war tactics & methods, were extremely important, to always fight with honor & gentlemen. These brave Militia Patriots ambushed Cornwallis's supplies, hid in trees as snipers, fought using native American tactics that they had learned, & eventually chased Cornwallis & his Army to VA to The Surrender of Yorktown. These areas were isolated for a hundred years or more, so that geographical isolation helped to persevere their culture & it took root. The woman passed down ancient ballad singing, basket weaving, spinning wool, cotton, or flax. Some of these ancient ballads were over 400 years old. They were passed down orally, & were memorized from when their grandparents lived in Scotland & the border lands of England & Scotland. Although most shipped out from ports in Northern Ireland(Ulster), they did not mingle too much with the native Irsh. At that point in history, religion was the most important thing in their lives & settlers in Ulster were mostly Presbyterians & a few Anglican, so they rarely mingled with The Catholic Irish. Looking back now, it makes absolutely no sense to dislike a person because of minor religious rituals, or any differences all humans share. If only we could just love all our similarities as humans & love & respect all the differences & uniqueness of every person, as long as they are peaceful and moral. I have faith that we will get there. Every man on the frontier had a rifle, a fiddle & knew the art of whiskey, wine, beer, & moonshine making. Reels & jigs also gave way to square dancing & other entertainment. Black settlers introduced the bango, & the Germans introduced harpsichord & other instruments. Please excuse me for rambling, but all by Scottish friends love the song "Copperhead Road". Any song that starts off with bagpipes is a hit. I would love it if you could find the time to do a reaction video, please? The songwriter/singer is Steve Earle. Thank you. I love your channel, & I love how you express emotion & compassion for the songs & lyrics that truly inspire you. Wishing you & your family safety, love, peace, & kindness from The USA.

Do yourself a favor and cover their Ring of Fire from the Sing Off before you do their collaboration with Avi Kaplan. Even better, do them back to back. (I'd recommend for the purpose of your video to skip the intro on the Sing off, and cue to the performance.)

here is the statement I saw: "Chris Rupp, one of country a cappella group Home Free's founding members, has announced his departure from the band. ... In the video, Rupp -- who co-founded Home Free with his brother Adam and three other members who are no longer with the group -- calls leaving Home Free "a very difficult decision to come to". per wikipedia/google boohoo!! I love this group don't go!!!

Yes, just their voices. Drums and harmonica sounds done by beat boxer Adam Rupp, jews harp sound done by Adam Chance, their baritone. And as for the bass.. that isn't even as low as Tim can go

also you don't always want to cut their videos off just after they finish singing because in a lot of their earlier videos they tell you about who arranged the songs and on their originals which member wrote the song

From what I understand, the jew harp sound is really tough on the throat and not something you want a person doing more than a really small amount of time, so yea, they use a looper, but it's still their voices pre recorded, I'm pretty sure. (kinda like how when you do a song and you record yourself doing the backup vocal. Adam's brother Chris, who is also a founder but left on good terms to pursue other projects, and Peter Hollens, who has done a few songs with them now, do that very well. ) After you do the ring of fire, you should watch their cover of Cam's mayday. If you want to laugh, watch any of Tim's story times ( my fave is the Watch Me Whip/Nae Nae. I have watched it several times and still laugh every time.) or watch him on the live version of "Your Man" ( let's just say the sound booth was not ready lol) Also, Adam Rupp does a "drum" solo at every show, which is awesome. Thanks, I enjoyed the react :)
