The first time I heard the song the way I like it was in the movie "O, Brother Where Are Thou?" They do it in a way hearkens to that version. Note: 99% of 'their' songs are done a cappella (without instruments only voice). This is done without 'anything'. If watch BOTH Adams you will see one is doing the beatbox/harmonica, the other is doing the guttural sound. You see Adam Rupp doing the harmonica/percussion sounds, you have to watch the video closely to see Adam Chance doing the guttural (standing in the background of the main singer and in a quick closeup of his mouth). His mouth one's assuming is singing, he's doing the juice harp sound. Additionally, it's Chance doing the bass voice while Foust is doing a solo. First times I heard Pantonix AND Home Fries were in that talent competition show 'The Sing-Off'. They won in separate years. It's also when I learned about Voice Play (they competed against & won over). They met Voice Play (& their fabulous bass singer Geoff Castellucci) and, Pantonix especially Avi Kaplan during the show. They developed some lasting work relationships. Another a cappella group they competed against & won over is featured on 'The Late Late Show with James Corden' The Filharmonic. Adam Chance coincidentally competed against Home Free in another a cappella group (assume that's where they met). It's a terrible shame that show was cancelled. It brought some talented & truly gifted artists to mainstream. Adam & Chris Rupp (brothers) founded the group. Since their inception, there's been some changes in the line up as members jumped in/out. Consistent members competed (Austin Brown, Rob Lunquist, Adam Rupp, Chris Rupp & Tim Foust) & won. Chris left a few years after they won the competition & was replaced by Adam Chance. Adam Chance has a deeper range which gives an advantage to help support Tim. Adam Chance has also been solo on a few songs since joined. (A fan of Home Free is called Home Fries). They're deceptive in that they have tight harmonies & range. They lean to country music, but can blend R&B, country, jazz & pop into their arrangements with beatbox rhythms to change it from typical a cappella percussion sounds. If listen closely to Folsom Prison Blues (can hear not a typical drum beat, but a 'railroad train and hitching to fire shotgun sound'. Home Free bantered around 'years' before their big break winning that show (Fairs, Cruises, typical country music circuits etc.). They were one of the most mature, polished & experienced groups in the competition. It showed as they progressed through the competition. They have what they term a 'Vault' of extensive recordings/videos of songs released years prior to the competition. Pantonix is a fabulous group, however they have a totally different sound when comparing groups. One would think Home Free would be struggling because of their tours derailed because of the 'demic'. It seems to be bringing them a broader audience as they've been producing new videos every so many weeks (ex. 'Folsom Prisom Blues'). Which is the miracle of the internet, getting tracks laid by them doing from their individual homes & filming there to. Kinda can tell the videos each slicing in with each other no group scenes. The sound is incredibly mixed. When I first became interested watching the competition show, I admit I lusted over Tim Foust. He had a sexiness with his wide range of voice. It made the group a triple threat. Austin Brown their flexible tenor, Adam Rupp their versatile beat boxer (won multiple competitions) & Tim the cute, shy smile bass. Every song in the competition I enjoyed. There was one song they did with The Filharmonic. Cabbyshack's 'I'm All Right' I will forever remember Rob Lunquist's comedic turn as the groundhog (have to see video the video). There was one episode the judge's got to work with specific groups. The judge Ben Folds was talking about their angst of doing a Johnny Cash song. They were worried country music purists would rake them over the coals. He convinced them to do it their way & see it as homage. They did & quite honestly I thought it was their signature song. It was the best up to that date song. It was 'Ring Of Fire'. It gave Tim Foust a stand-out performance. It showed his range & the arrangement had country/reggae mix. I started following them on KZbin. Like anyone there are songs I love, songs not so into but it sticks in my mind. Favorites (keeps updating): Ring of Fire, Man of Sorrow, Folsom Prison Blues, Thinking Out Loud/Let's Get It On, Sunday Best, End of The Road, Elvira, Nine To Five, Can't Find What I' m Looking for & Mayday that's just a few). It's true, what many warn in that need to first listen to a few songs to understand what roles (tenor/baritone/bass) are in the group, then do Mayday. I had to close my eyes the second time through to get it. One video that's wrongly interpreted by a few is the 'Ring of Fire' with Avi Kaplan. I call it the dueling basses. It was nice for Tim to have the deep support while singing (unfortunately Chris Rupp didn't have that depth). So it caused a slight gap to support Tim. Avi really does go to town in that low range backing him. Enjoyed tremendously, but the ending many wrongly think it's Avi that hits the low note. It's not. The video clearly shows Avi putting on a cowboy hat & not changing his mouth. One does see Tim in the background dropping his mouth & hitting the note. What I like is that they readily do collaborations as individuals or as a group with others. They've written songs & done arrangements for the group. I like the video of Elvira with The Oak Street Boys paying homage to the original singers. Austin did a solo with guitar accompaniment of 'Unchained Melody', or they get a music arrangement from Hollens & Geoff Castellucci. Foust does Misty Mountains with Peter Hollens or the group sings with Hollens 'Can't Find What I' m Looking for'. If Bass lover, haven't had chance listen to Castellucci's Black Bird or, High and Dry.

If you really enjoy basses, you would love "Hard to Be Cool in a Minivan (Oakridge Boys)," "Battle Hymn of the Republic (William Lee and Chris Golden; and bass singer, Tim Duncan)," Home Free-"How Great Thou Art," "Im Tiefen Kellar (sorry, my German is a little rusty)"-Hans Rolf Rippert (aka Ivan Rebroff), anything done by the following: Tim Storms, Zlatopolsky, Vladimir Miller, Glen Miller (basso profundo and not the jazz man, obviously), Der Drei Basse, Tim Riley, Christian Davis, Matt Fouch, Jeff Chapman, JD Sumner, George Younce, Campbell Vertesi, the late Harold Reid, Martii Telvala, Samuel Ramey, and the list goes on. I am a bass 1/bass-baritone myself and enjoy listening to basses from most styles. Avi Kaplan does a great job with "Black is the Color" when he collaborated with Peter Hollens. Same with Tim Foust when he did "The Song of the Lonely Mountain" with Peter Hollens. Coincidentally, if memory serves me correctly, Tim Foust bottoms out at a B0. Could be mistaken though. Love this video...and you may have just found a new subscriber.

Ever since someone shared this cover on my facebook, I've been watching reaction videos to it. Mostly vocal coaches or other singers but DUUUUUUDE I'll you one thing they ALL have in common. Soon as Tim rolls in with his deep voice, the world drowns. You know what I'm talking about. None of the youtubers even try to hide it either. Priceless lol

You will love their other song, (Ring of Fire) that have over 37m views and is one of their best. I really enjoyed your reaction. I learn so much from your videos. Cheers!

Pushing the sound back at the end of the note is a classic Southen Country sound.

What I find amazing about this group of musicians is, of course the multi faceted beat boxer, but the vocalists are all of solo capacity and each voice has a different texture that is distinct, but those same voices blend into full, rich harmonies that blend seamlessly into melted dark chocolate for the ear. They also do many different genres with success. Variety is their hallmark.

Love your technical reviews and your enthusiasm for the craft of singing... Also very fun watching you swoon over the bass singers... I believe the singer doing the overtone singing is Adam Chance, a Baritone, who also has a great low range and generally amazing voice. He's the one standing on the back left when they're in a group of 5.. I see you caught him at the end. Adam Rupp is their amazing beatboxer, who I think swallowed a harmonica at some point in his childhood. He's remarkable in is range and type of effects. He's well featured in Home Free's Folsom Prison Blues cover, and so is Adam Chance singing much more than overtone. They're all amazing. There's also some remarkable video of Adam Rupp doing a 'drum solo' at one of their live shows. It's mind-boggling. Keep up the great reviews. I'm mostly in for the acapella stuff, but count me as a new subscriber.

If you'd like to check out an all female acapella group, look up Citizen Queen. They were put together and produced by Scott from Pentatonix. Like many of the male groups you've reacted to, each have their own mega talent, and will take you to another level when brought together.

On the visuals for this video, I live in Louisiana, and have seen things like this myself, so filmed in Mississippi, Louisiana, or Georgia at a guess. I love seeing peoples first reactions to Home Free, Pentatonix and Voice Play. They are so good, and if you haven't seen them before, you have no idea what to expect. Wait, only one? I got a basket full!!!

Adam Chance is the one doing the over tone part making the sound of a mouth harp and he is the baritone of the group. He is the featured singer in their cover of "Cover Me Up" and you really get to appreciate his voice as he does the entire song himself and the rest of the guys just sing background, harmonies and such. Plus there is a sweet message within the video about Chance and his significant other. ( NOTE: Adam Chance is just called Chance by the group since there are two Adams in the group.

I have listened to a lot of comments on this cover you impressed me picking up and pointing out in an understandable way alot of nuisances that make this group sound so good

Adam Chance the baritone singer used to sing bass in his former group called 7th street sympnony...Austin Brown (the red headed high tenor) was a cruise ship entertainer prior to joining HomeFree..that may explain why he is such a good performer ..listen to any of their stuff it's a promise that you will enjoy them all

Oh yes you really heard a harmonica, and yes it's really all vocal. If you truly want to hear what he can do react to a Adam Rupp drum solo. He has won two world beat box championships that I know of. Please keep the home free coming. May I suggest die a happy man,helplessly hoping, and in the blood to hear a better mix of their vocals. Thanks so much you have a great day darling.

The man that 'it was the whole time' is Adam Chance (yes, there are 2 Adams in the group, Adam Rupp the beatboxer and him, he goes by Chance to avoid confusion). Chance joined the group after Chris Rupp, one of the founders of the group left (amicably) to peruse a solo career. Chris Rupp actually helped pick his replacement, which is pretty cool. Chance is a baritone but can down to bass as well, something his predecessor couldn't do (Chris Rupp is a high baritone, almost a tenor). The new guy being able to sing bass freed up Tim to do some...other stuff that you'll see if you watch a song they covered called 'Mayday'.
@elizabethhostetter19463 жыл бұрын
i think Chance is a baritone-bass more than a baritone.

since practically every one else has mentioned Ring of Fire (which is absolutely gorgeous, btw) i'd definitely suggest listening to the arrangement of Sound of Silence that Tim did with Peter Hollens

Chance is the guy singing the overtones. You'll hear more of him in Mayday and Folsom Prison Blues
@Indigo_moon3 жыл бұрын
They used a loop station for some of the sound effects so they could sing while still having sound effects in the background. Also, like when Adam does the harmonica, you can still hear the beatboxing. Also with the jaw harp sound and the Dump Dump Do & I think one other thing. Check out their version of "How Great Thou Art" and also "Ring of Fire" in which Tim has a low note that you can't miss. "Helplessly Hoping" is a must.

Yes, Adam, the beatboxer, is (not) playing a harmonica. Also (Adam) Chance, the baritone, is doing the Jaw (or Jew's) Harp sound, what you were calling the overtone singing. I believe Rob did the scratchy record sound, but it might have been Chance.

First. Loved the analysis. Most of those type videos, the person reacting isn't trained enough to know what they're hearing. Second. Many of the vocal intricacies of the home free members make them such a unique group. I think you would love their cover of Folsom prison blues. More vocal harmonica and Tim rocks an E1 (vocal fry but still immensely satisfying).
@toml15783 жыл бұрын
Home Free is a wonderful group to listen to and they have many more songs that are sure to amaze and entertain you and us. Another on that would be fun and has a lovely surprise if you haven't experienced them would be Pisces by Jinjer. The lead singer has an amazing voice and I would love to see your analysis.

He's a baritone/bass (when Tim isn't there) & doubles doing some of the extra tones along with glasses who also does some. Tim also does some of the bass added tones but he has a 5 octave range which is extraordinary because it's into the 1st octave then up.
