Home insurance turning homeownership into 'American Nightmare'

I'm so happy I made productive decisions about my finances that changed forever. I'm a single mother living in Vancouver Canada, bought my first house in October and hoping to retire soon if things keep going smoothly for me.

Eventually home insurance will surpass the mortgage payment, what is even worse is that if someone files a claim, the insurance provider can easily drop the coverage and the home owner will be responsible for the repair/replacement of the home on their own. Profits are all that matter, period.

@chocolate_62470 almost the same as auto insurance..... when the car becomes meaningless to repair, they give you a small payout, and away you go. Good luck finding another car with that piddly amount or even worse now you may even have to buy a new/used car and have payments if your previous car was paid off 🤔. Wait til the housing insurance market gets like this.

To paraphrase: “diversity your assets-own a business” Possibly the stupidest advice I have ever heard. Most small businesses fail and require a full time commitment. Leaving your job and starting a business isn’t diversifying. It’s a career change. The speaker is out of touch with reality

Same. Haven't had home insurance for 30 years, and went through 3 hurricanes in Florida. With 2 roof replacements I still would have paid more in premiums than the cost of the roofs.

My house was built in the 40s and has been through countless earthquakes here in SoCal. Still standing 80 yrs later. 2 years more and I won't have to be worrying if anything happens to this home

Let me sum up this 4:39 minute piece to save you some time. The reason of home insurance is so high is everything else is so high. If you have a mortgage you are stuck as self-insurance is not an option no matter what your risk appetite is.
