This is my DIY DDR pad made from wood and aluminum. Designed to look like the original DDR arcade version. I wasn't able to document all the methods and procedures from scratch to finish on this project. I just want a quick video on how I managed to build my own DDR pad.

Amazing Job! Too bad I don't know how to attach those wires. I was planing on break down my old soft dance pads to use them in this, I don't know of that will work.

@@nofreakinway735 that will do. You just need to trace each foil path going to the main board. You'll see one path is connected on all four panels (ground or common) and one connection per panel ( ⬅️⬇️⬆️➡️). Then mark or tag each contact on the soft pads mainboard.

Only a few minor thing's i would do different if following this myself. I would order the corner clamps, I know they're not crazy expensive and would rather save some time there. i would use counter sunk hardware on stationary panels, yes that can work when wrapping wood in metal. and steel rather than aluminum, just to save on cost. Overall a really nice build, good work.

On my other builds, I did counter sunk all the screws and replaced all metals with stainless sheets. Upgraded the sensors and added programmable RGB led lights.

Hi Jorick's, Great video. I am currently trying to put all the components together to make your pad. I have a few questions: 1. How does the wiring work? It looks like you took the board from the controller and then just linked the sensors to each arrow on the pad. But the aluminum strips just need to be stepped on for it to trigger a response? If you can elaborate on this that would be very helpful! 2. how are the pads secured into the rest of the structure? Are they just placed in there because it doesn't seem like the brackets are holding them down 3. are the dimensions for the brackets based on one sheet of aluminum that you cut into two? Or did you use one sheet per bracket? thanks!

The only change I would made on this project is changing these "sensors" for actual sensors sold via Ali Express. They are awesome and would give a better feedback after press the button. But anyways, awesome project, man!

That's right. Right now I'm on tight budget that's why I opt to use alternative sensor instead. I can upgrade it to original sensors.

But it will vary on materials you're going to use. My friends wanted me to build again and sell it to them. Maybe I can document everything again from scratch to finish.

You can. You can use L1 and R1 buttons or any buttons available. Just map it in Stepmania afterwards.

@@almorea1738 Aluminum tape. It's still holding up. I will also replace it with copper tape (conductive adhesive) so that I can get rid of the wires on all four corners if you noticed the 4:49 mark

I made it myself. I ended up welding the angle instead of bending because I can't find bending services nearby.

Why at 1:51 does the 885 x 17mm part appear taller than 850mm x 17mm if it's the same 17mm?

Originally, it was 50mm (original pad) but I can't find suitable wood size that's why I opted to make it 17mm on all sides. I didn't bother to change the drawing from MS Paint and I just changed the label from 50mm to 17mm.

@@ianpinilla2184 size will vary on your materials. I used 3/4 inch thick plyboard (17mm) as stationary panels. If you're going fold a metal sheet, this will vary on its thickness. Mine is 1.5mm thick aluminum sheet.

Yes. You just need to use a PS controller and solder directly onto the contacts. If you can find a knock off PS controller, that will do.

@@reckyjo00 Does the controller have to be fully functioning? I have a PS2 controller, and some of the buttons don't work.

@@ArGame. most of the time, the rubber buttons (black carbon) is worn out that's why it fails to register. Try to use any metal object to bridge the gold contacts and see if it work while plugged into the console. If so, you're good to go. Make sure to solder corresponding arrows exactly onto the controller. There's no button mapping in PS unlike Stepmania.

Im really confused what the carpet foam puzzle material is or i have never seen it before, Currently in the process of making my own bc i have all the necessary supplies, just needed the metal and my boyfriend gets scrap material all the time. Im now realizing there are a bunch of other nerds like me who still wish DDR was always an option in every arcade now your lucky if you find one that works half decent. I drive an hour for a dave and busters just to play a few rounds. If mine comes out real nice, I am def going to find a way to produce them in batches to be sold off. I have been looking for my niche since I had my brain decompression surgery last year.

Edit: the carpet foam was my first design since I haven't found a suitable sensor that time. I don't want a noisy metal to metal or plastic to wood sound when stepping on it. After I found a suitable sensor, I started to mass prod and sold them to some of my friends.

You mean the black background of note skin? It's in mod options. I always set it on darkest to see the pattern clearly.

@@marcoslugo3031 2.5mm. Stationary panel is 280 x 280mm while the acrylic is 275mm x 275mm. Corner bracket plate is 1.5mm thick total of 3mm on both sides. Remaining 2mm (1mm gap on all sides between acrylic panels and corner bracket plate) as space for it to spring back.

First of all excuse my english, is not my native language: I saw that your pad is very wide and that helps that when you play songs with high stamina it does not slide on the floor, do you think if the pad is less wide the pad could slide? Thanks!

@niCSanitg it's the same size as the original pad. The reason why it's not sliding is because its heavy. Also, I added the rubber like foam mat underneath to absorb impact and prevent from sliding even on extreme gameplay.

I already upgraded it to EZ2Dance sensors and it has much better response specially on high BPMs

@@reckyjo00 I should upgrade too. The rubber hoses work well, but only for slow and steady songs. I switched to the puzzle foam pads by cutting a few blocks and placing the foil tape on top of them. I'll look into it and see if I can get it upgraded. I'm using a PS2 dance pad since I have a lot of DDR games on the PS2. Thanks for the guide though!

@@reckyjo00 It's on my channel, but it's a bit outdated. I found out that the panels would shift and almost leave the brackets so I crunched them all together and that solved the issue. Since the fix, I've played it for hours and had some minor issues here and there (Ghost stepping), but it works now. I'll post an update video, but I do have a video of the pad in action. It's all wood and I was originally supposed to add metal sheets to the pad but I forgot to.

Yeah, but it has no arcade sensors or FSR. Now I'm using Arduino microcontroller with programmable RGB and knock off arcade sensors. I also managed to use 1.5mm thick stainless sheets and bended bar. Now I'm selling it for about $500 equivalent.

i want to know how people get perfects at all. when i play games like super dancer online or stepmania, i get perfects, but going to PS1's DDR or even A20 Plus, there seems to be a major difference. on the other games, i press exactly on beat, i get perfects. on any DDR title, I press exactly on beat, I get greats. the only time I get perfect or marvelous is when i press "slightly before" the beat... that shouldn't be a thing at all. it even does it at an actual arcade. interestingly, there is a stepmania arcade rigged up and i have no issue with it. why is DDR so wonky with timing?

I invested proper tools while working over seas. Now I fabricated my own brake bender for me to bend stainless sheet and its much more easier now.

Hopefully you ended up flushing all those hardware on your center metal pad and corners. Then it’s complete for a true DDR pad.
