Yeah, same here. It's not a slight on Mangini who is clearly a virtuoso on the drums. It's just that some of us just 'click' with certain drummers. It's not even about skill, they just have an intangible 'thing' that draws us in.

@@billpeart Like running downhill vs running uphill. Uphill requires strength and endurance, while running downhill is more akin to guiding a force of nature. Just get the movements right, stay in control, and it takes not a lot of effort. And that is I think a really good way to describe his playing, like an effortless force of nature.

Never really noticed until now, but Mike tends to hit his hi hats and cymbals with just the very end of his stick. This is kinda crazy to me for a couple reasons. One is, I usually hit with much more of the shoulder, I’d say a good 25% or more of the stick is past the edge of whatever cymbal I’m hitting. And I STILL will miss the target entirely every once in a blue moon. For him to frequently use just like, the last 10% of his stick length and not miss constantly is impressive in its own right. Second, with how hard he hits, I’m surprised those sticks even survive a single song.
@kepp77874 жыл бұрын
I’m with ya. I’m shoulder of the stick all the time unless I’m doing some fancy hi hat or ride work.

As much as i like Mangini - I wish DT just listened to Portnoy and took a few years off then regrouped and he would not have left... There is a groove he has that is very Zepplin inspired despite being a metal drummer and its so good... Mangini may even be 'better' technically, but Portnoy just has the feel/groove...
