Seeing this episode reminds me of the rust you "shoved under the rug" behind the rear valence panel. I would remove the spot welds, remove the panel and fix it properly, or it will come back and bite you behind sooner or later. Working on old cars is almost always a love/hate relationship, but you always seem to make the best out of it. You've quickly become one of my favorite youtubers, and I love your work, keep it up! Merry Christmas!

I plan on treating that rust 'under the rug', just by encapsulating it with a rust inhibitor.
@hotdognr12323
@hotdognr12323 6 жыл бұрын
Home Built By Jeff That will certainly slow it down, but only for a while in my experience. I believe the time spent drilling a few spot welds and removing the rust is worth it, and it's much better to deal with it now than finding out later the hard way. I don't really see why you're investing so much in this car only to leave structural frame rusty, it just doesn't seem logical.

I'll take that 110°f I just walked outside slipped on ice, broke my thumb cut my arm up and racked my head on the concrete. I despise this 15°f winter BS Although this is good entertainment in the mean time.

Just published one! Race season got really busy after thrashing to make it to the Mt Washington hillclimb, and we ran out of time to edit. It's 26° here now (-3°C for most of the world) so it's starting to get chilly out, for sure. There's definitely one advantage to working with steel instead of carbon fiber - Welding keeps you warm and doesn't care if it's cold out, and carbon fiber resin requires lots of heat to cure (which is expensive).

I know exactly what you mean Jeff about thinking you have gotten all the rust only to find more. It was the same with my Cortina project. Yay, No, Yay, No !!!! Also can I ask what type of tripod your using or whatever it is your using, you seem to get a great angle downwards from a fair height to shoot video footage. Mine doesn't get high enough for what I'd like sometimes.

Haha, I think you have the impression that the videos are actually 6 months behind the actual work like a regular TV show. That is definitely not the case. I generally finish filming the weeks episode around 4pm on a Friday. I am usually a party animal Friday night, editing the video and generally get around to uploading it around 11pm, and then go to bed. What you see is as up to date as it gets.
@herrcrazyme8713
@herrcrazyme8713 6 жыл бұрын
Actually I knew you upload the day you finish an episode because you mentioned it in some 911 videos ^^ What I meant was that you will probably start working on the alfa project when there's "no mor work until ... is ready" with the z, I think. I only wanted to know roughly when you want to start on the alfa... Sorry when what I am talking about doesn't make sense :D Me a German so mein english ist not so gut ;D

please don't weld the hoop to the floor, box up the corners as platforms you can also concave the wheel arches a bit and weld the hoop to them for more strength.

The cage is going to be a bolt in, but I was still considering the mounts. On the 911 I had flat surfaces to work with. I will probably mount the rear stays to the flat section on the top of the strut tower, and the feet I was going to go a foot with a bend in it. Do you have photos of the mounts you have done?

I had a look, but I don't see how it would help for a simple cage. The design is not a big issue, and having the template makes it really easy to lay the hoop down for measuring. As you saw in the video, having a good design is one thing, but then it is made by hand and if something is slightly out you need to fix it on the fly.

Are you not concerned with if the roll cage is actually safely made? I would be worried about the cage buckling and impaling me. I know for racing a home made cage would be no good. Not unless it was made from a kit from a recognised supplier.

I've built and seen a lot of home built cages. As long as it follows the standards of what ever class you plan on running in, its usually good. Not every car has to be ready for rally races (bout as extreme as cage building gets). Think of it this way, would you rather have something or nothing? If this car wrecks hard enough to buckle that 1.5"(guessing) dom tube.. If you didn't have it at all the car would be a pancake.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
The tube bender is approved and I have followed the rule book to a T. As @1dickycat mentioned, the tube is probably 10 times stronger than the car itself (I am a firefighter and I have cut up plenty of them). I have more faith in this than in most of the flimsy kits out there. Rally cages don't come from kits, they are made like this.
@joelb2660
@joelb2660 6 жыл бұрын
Yes I saw your comments in the video after I made my original post! 😂 You are both very correct, full on Rally cages are made piece by piece for sure, I was thinking of the likes of “safety devices” cages we get in the uk for a kit. Good work! 👍🏻
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
I would be wary of some of those kits, as they don't generally comply to motorsport standards (at least not here). They are much lighter weight, and often made in China.

Oh dear. Why ruin a perfectly good car with a roll cage? Such a shame Jeff. Leave it original! Take the silly plastic flares off. The 240Z is an absolutely beautiful design, and you are not improving it. Strangely, I had no problem with you racifying your 911, but for some reason, I find hacking up a 240Z to be a low-quality idea. A straight, and factory original 240Z is going to be worth a huge chunk of change in the very near future. Seems like a shame to make it worth a lot less.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 6 жыл бұрын
Complete originality is not seen the same way in Z circles as it is in the Porsche world. This car is not super early, and is not matching numbers anyway (and flares were actually a factory option in the day). The cage is bolt in, so it is not permanent either.
