Recaros... Did you know that Recaro once was a part of Porsche? Porsche bought REutter CAROsserie (a coach building company)... They kept the metal fabrication and the interior branch became a company of its own. In the 50s and 60s they had a severe shortage of production volume, so Reutter made a lot of bodies for Porsche. In my hometown Wendler fabricated the 550 bodies and also worked for years on race cars for Porsche. Thanks for your awesome videos, maybe you should do "Facts with Ms. Jeff" on Porsche as well, I really love this segments.

Seriously Jeff. Just keep the passenger seat fixed. It will keep it lower which is good for driver vision. Easier to install plus with race harnesses it will prevent hours of constant readjustment.

Those red safety roll over bars, add 5 - 10 RP points, incase you think about changing them Jeff. It coordinates with your now red tow hook. That's professional racer 1.01.

Nice midweek surprise. I belong to a car club in the state of Victoria, it conducts many sprint meetings (time attack) events during the year. I have an '84 Alfa 2.0l to which I have fitted a racing harness, it still has the original inertia seat belts. I drive to the track wearing the seat belts because it is illegal to wear a harness on the road. The harness meets FIA standards but not Australian Design Rules (ADR). So 39 yo belts allowed but not 4 yo racing harness. Go figure.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff Жыл бұрын
What is even sillier, is on older 60's cars, it is legal to drive without seatbelts as it never came with them, but still illegal to use a racing harness ;)

The Porsche is beginning to resemble a car that I would gladly like to drive - great work thus far. When looking back on the original purchase, I’m unable to find suitable words that can succinctly describe the abhorrent modifications that were carried out on the car. In the UK they describe such mods as ‘Gary’ mods, however in this case they are Gary mods on steroids. It’s quite incredible how a person would spend hard earned money at seriously devaluing a decent car - but also achieving a high grade in ugliness. mmm ……, I guess it’s a form of an achievement.

Interested how come you didn't mount the passengers seat directing to the floor with spreader plates underneath. That will give you all the clearance and the passengers seat doesn't need to move as they don't have a steering wheel in the way.

So the seatbelt clipped into a buckle that was fastened to a seat that held in by one bolt? Absolutely brilliant! Being road registered it would have been supposedly inspected?Be afraid Jeff, be very afraid. Who knows what other little "unsafe grems" wait in ambush.

@gazzafloss
@gazzafloss Жыл бұрын
@@jamest5149with respect, no sir, you are incorrect, the state that Jeff's Boxter bears the registration plates of, and that Jeff lives in, New South Wales has annual inspections for cars called a "pink slip", you need the inspection every 12 month anniversary of your cars registration once the car is more than 3 years old. Some of the inspections are less than, shall we say thorough. I lived my first 53 years in that state, I now live in Queensland, one of the Aussie states that doesn't have annual roadworthy inspections.

Many years ago (early 90s) mate of mine bought a mk II escort. It had a modified 2.0 litre pinto engine. Was apparently quite fast. Anyways as usual the bodywork looked like a patch work quilt/blanket. Anyways he had an accident in the car wearing his seatbelt. The seats came away from the floor causing him to hit the steering wheel/window. Still bears the marks on his face today.. .. The floor was rotten with just no strength left in it..

@@stuartd9741 yes back in time, didn't matter how safe it was, if it looked good and went, or at least sounded, fast it was cool to go. Chap I went to tech college with, put a six cyl 179ci Holden engine, (Australian GM product), into a Mk11 Austin Healey Sprite. He spun it on a fast corner, hit a culvert and the car broke in half, no strength left after rust and bits cut out to fit the big engine. At least the Sprite looked good and went very fast. Good thing no one died.
@stuartd9741
@stuartd9741 Жыл бұрын
@@gazzafloss Yes different times as they say ... Bet that sprite went well. Considering at the time most cars rusted badly makes one wonder how safe cars were back then. .. The escort was painted lime green lowered with Capri laser 4 spoke alloys. It looked the dogs doo dads. Gas flowed head might have had a cam not sure I can't remember & lightened flywheel. Not sure of the power was the fastest car in town at the time... We were kids then so quite impressionable...

In the States (at least in my area), if you have a full harness, then the track rules requires you to use a HANS device. Even if it is just an open track day. Most likely a good idea but I've seen drives get surprised by this rule. Are there similar rules in Australia?

Jeff, in most countries, race rules state the shoulder harness mounting points have to be below the level of the top of your shoulders. What do Australian rules say?
@robbell4339
@robbell4339 Жыл бұрын
Strict adherence with FIA type regulations likely not too important on a track car, but from a safety perspective, this is a good point. On my car, I’ve also crossed the harness straps to make use of a HANS device.

Yes, and please don’t think I’m just being a troll. I really look forward to the Alfarrarri(?) vids every week. I do think you’re missing a trick with this one though. Tb’s and some proper (equal-ish length) manifolds would make it sound awesome. Some weight loss would make it properly quick. You do a great job, not what I would do but great stuff. The Alfa is a great road car. Make the Porsche a really good track car, not just a cosmetic exercise. PS. My obsession with weight loss is all-consuming. I got my glass and steel road car 205 to 680kg. The turbo lump and roll hoop (plus minimal cage) is going to bump it up a bit but 800kg+450hp might go alright. Probably.

Using sliders on a race car seat ought to be fitted with additional supports to prevent the sliding rails separating as they are under considerable stress in competition and then may have to deal with a crash. The last thing you want to have is the seat detach from the car as even with harnesses it could be life threatening. I weld a couple of loops around each slider so that it can still slide but not separate. I've found sliders to be useful even in competition cars because clothing, thin race suit and race suit plus anorak as needed in rally cars etc. can make a difference to where the seat is positioned, it may be only one click but it makes for better control. The front towing eye should have been mounted so that the fixings were in shear not pull out as it is significantly stronger. In the event that the car will be recovered rest assured the marshals will be more concerned with moving the car than being gentle and expect a snatch recovery. If that goes wrong the towing eye will be a missile that will rip through the bumper cover and God help anyone in the way. I have seen the results of a detached fixing on a winch pull and its not pleasant, he ended up with a black eye, and by that I mean his right eyeball was totally black and he was blinded in that eye.

Is the bar where you've mounted the harnesses rated for that purpose Jeff, rather than just a 'beauty' bar? Not trolling, just genuinely concerned for your welfare should the unthinkable happen, which (touches wood) it won't.

I suspect they fitted those low bolster seat beacuse they were drug trafficers and if they needed to ditch the car quickly they could get out faster.. Can not see any other reason why they fitted those seats in the first place. And those add on styling bits, only a drug person could fit those.
