This is our biggest hydroponic strawberry crop yet. There are lots of Katy's growing tips in this video. We have tried them in the NFT system, but found they are much easier in buckets. We talk about what it was like growing them in the main greenhouse. Then I got a couple things done in there before heading out to the high tunnel. Doug was also outside working on the strawberry support system. We have 100 buckets and 500 plants. The extra strawberry plants went into hanging baskets.

We cut the tips of strawberry roots before we plant them in my country. I am not an expert but I heard that if the roots are bended while you plant, it affects the plant negatively. Great greenhouse by the way!

Devon...have you looked into vertical hydroponic towers for strawberries? Isn't it a lot of vertical height waste for such short plants compared with tall growing plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc? Even with the planters you have now, you might be able to create at least a two tier system with sufficient gap between each tier to prevent shading. Please ask your "evil genius" dad to try building a small scale two tier system in a corner. If it works, you can replicate throughout the greenhouse next season. No offense to Dad...a nice compliment, that's all! 😁 😁 Good luck! As always, you guys are doing an awesome job with your farm! Love it! Learning a lot, and hope to start a small farm one day! Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! 😀

The strawberries are Albion and Seascape from Johnny's Seed. The white rail buckets were special order from CropKing. They do not have them listed on their site yet, and I was unable to find them any where online. I will update when I can get a link for them. The rail system is Doug's design.

I think the reason why people think that hydroponic grown produce is flavorless, is because hydroponic tomatoes for instance, when I see them in the store, most of the time they are trucked in from afar: like from Canada (I live in South West Missouri). So the tomatoes are picked green so they will survive the journey, which causes them not to have the taste as a tomato that is picked at maturity.
@xenzgoul8319
@xenzgoul8319 2 жыл бұрын
It also depends on the kind of tomato u grow, i live in the Netherlands and because of our climate all the commercialy grown tomato's are grown in hydroponic greenhouses. Farmers in co-operation with Wageningen university of agricultural research have bred tomato plants that only need 4 liters of water to produce 1kg of tomato's (around 1.05 gallon for around 2.2 pounds of tomato). Ironically our tomato's taste quite watery, which besides the selective breeding comes from the fact that our tomato's unlike for example Italian and Spanish ones get way less sunlight. Although i kinda like the more watery taste in salads, it's horrible in sauces or soup in which you would really want that strong tomato flavour.

That’s funny because I live in Canada and feel like all our “fresh” veggies are trucked in from the U.S. and are green on the truck and ripen in the dark. But I can tell you I absolutely LOVE growing my own food in hydroponics which I’m doing in a very small apartment and it’s incredible the quantity of food that you can actually grow hydroponically and I can tell you that the taste is beyond anything that I had ever imagined soooo amazingly good!! The tomatoes are the absolute best I’ve ever tasted and I leave them to ripen fully on the plant and only pick them when I need them.

Getting into this myself and just curious about your opinion on something. Do you think the problem with the NFT channel could be solved by implementing a drip system? I have been growing various kinds of vegetables hydroponically for about 3 years now. I started with peppers, tomatoes, and lettuce. They all tasted great, full of flavor. I have since grown spinach, basil, stevia and green beans. I have even just started trying to grow zucchini (I just got some flowers in the last week so nothing has set yet). I think when people say hydroponic vegetables taste bland, they may be referring to things they are buying in the grocery store. Foods that were still picked green and only ripened up in the back of a truck several hundreds or more miles from the grocery store. Love your channel, thanks for all the great information!

the only time one has 'bland' hydroponic produce is lower PK ration to N e.g NPK. tip to all hobby growers, if you've tasted your crop and its bland add 10-50ppms MKP to each 250ppms of your nutrient tank solution to increase your PK to N ratio.

Good question. We had a couple places that were interested in buying our produce right when we started. We picked up a few local restuarants and grocery stores the first year. The greenhouse wasn't totally full at that point. Katy and Doug spent a lot of time making deliveries all over the place. Eventually Katy got accepted into a couple farm markets and was contacted by Yellowbird to participate in the CSA program. Then they were able to drop the deliveries and focus on spending more time at the greenhouse and filling it to max capasity.

Make sure you keep your tunnel under 85 degrees with day-neutrals, or you'll see blossoms but fruit won't set. Fertilize routinely with P/K when you are blooming. Hit them with a more concentrated N and a humic April/May. I helped to develop some now patented day neutral varieties when I was at MSU. I grow one of them now commercially on a plasticulture system. The variety I grow out-performs and out-flavors both Albion and Seascape. I have berries May-July and August-October. If you ever want runners I'm in Michigan and can help to work out royalties with university and get your farm going with some.

supply chain foods is why food actually cost money. if everyone had a garden at home producing food people would only spend maybe 15 minutes a day on their own crops and have unlimited food. the problem with supply chains is oversupply and artificial inflation of cost is from export and exchange of suppliers distributing. Free food creates cost when you don't grow it yourself. I grow my own hydroponic foods and some outdoor foods and plants. Indoor grown hydroponic plants can be on a cycle growing year around. Preservation of foods is so easy when you have too much growing. waste nothing and reuse everything. I don't know why there are people starving in this world because its so easy. people who farm for money only makes cost of living go up.

You've made some excellent points about the benefits of home gardening and sustainable practices. It's fantastic to see more people recognizing the importance of growing their own food. Let's keep spreading the word about self-sufficiency!

On the subject of flavor in hydroponic foods , I read somewhere that a grower was having a problem with tasteless produce and he solved the problem by adding bat guano to the nutrients during the last few weeks before harvest .

Considering the lastest pandemic was caused by bats i don't think quano is a healthy option. Worm casting would be way better and carry no disease.

I have a greenhouse and I grow several types of hydroponic tomatoes, lettuce and three cucumber types. The produce is to die for. When you hear people talking about hydroponic produce taste bland or like water this is a tactic used by conventional growers to keep people from buying hydroponic products. What you need to realize. Is that hydroponic growers can produce more food faster using less space than conventional growers and better quality products without the use of harmful chemicals. So I guess if I were still a conventional grower I would scare people away from my competitors products as well. So it’s best to try it for yourself and steer clear of the many rumors that are far from truth.

Thank you so much! We'd recommend starting small and growing what you like. Growing in buckets with medium is more forgiving than NFT, but NFT can be pretty simple too. I've seen small setups that have great results. Katy always says to just pay attention to the plants and fix issues as soon as pop up.

I have gardening with the no till approach and using wood chips but I am not getting the yields. Some gardeners view no till or ground gardens as a sacred method. I am more concerned with results and feeding my family and have been doing research on hydroponics. Do you recommend any trusted sources to read about this method. I have 4 daughters I need to take care of , and want them to eat healthy . So any information you could provide would be appreciated

the house is a CropKing house. They can manufacture any size you need. Check into grants from the USDA. You can sometimes find grants that will help you pay for a high tunnel

Hi, how often do you feed them? Do you waste alot more nutrients using perlite and vermiculite? What do you think about growing them in rockwool slabs, will the slabs get too hot?
@HomegrownPassion
@HomegrownPassion Жыл бұрын
we feed them 4 times a day. we monitor the waste and only water enough to grow the strawberries. right now, it's about 10 minutes at a time. remember its going through pressure sensitive drip tape that only lets a certain amount of nutrients through at a time. slabs would work just too expensive for us

we try to get it so the strawberries use all the water, but you are right if there is left over it dumps on the ground.
