This story exemplifies the worst and the best of humanity. I find the actions of these scammers to be revolting. They performed a manipulative and unintelligent scheme with the purpose to fulfill their greed and show off a lifestyle that was clearly out of their reach. On the other hand, we have the donors. I know a lot of people have said how gullible they were, and I can understand the argument, maybe they were gullible. However, I do feel that there are many generous people out there who would like to do good for society in some capacity. I think their generosity is commendable. As for the gullibility argument, I would say that once the money is out of our hands we may never know what happens to it, that’s the whole nature of charity. Even the most prestigious charity organizations can defraud people. Either way, I do appreciate the good hearted individuals who are willing to do something good for others. With the guy being a being a gambler, that means who was prone to certain kind of behavior's. Im sure the gal was 100% to participate. I guess somehow he got involved with the homeless fellow, and I'm sure the 2 men hatched up a plan. The thing with go fund me is that when you have an attractive gal in the post, people are more willing to money up. Do you think that if The couple wasn't young young relatively speaking, and the gal being very attractive, that people would be donating As much as they did? These are the same kind of people that would Sue you in a heartbeat if you accidentally bumped them in a parking lot, and they would fake Phantom whiplash and injuries. they were lucky idiots. Cases show that after making off with a big score, lack of secrecy and exuberant spending always gets them caught. Just recently, one notorious bank robber confessed to a robbery 50 years ago while on his deathbed. Not even his wife knew up to that point, and authorities still don't know how he spent the money. He hightailed across the country and abandoned his parents and friends who never knew if he was alive or dead. That is the level of discipline required. But mostly idiots defraud and steal, so they'll always be caught. Ted Conrad is his name if you are wondering.

As someone who was formerly homeless, stories like this are very upsetting. It's hard enough to survive on the streets, without horrible frauds like these that make it worse. While I didn't panhandle, it was still difficult. Especially when non profit agencies, and social services being so short staffed. Plus, add to the fact that when budget cuts happen, it's always the poor who suffers. Plus, I have lived around addicts of drugs and alcohol, during my time as a homeless person, plus when I lived in an SRO ( Single Room Occupancy) hotels. I also worked in the buildings. Plus, I have personally seen what lengths an addict will go to feed and support their habit. It's very sad.

Thank You Dr Grande. I’ve worked with addicts directly. You clearly understand heroin and it’s all encompassing control of a human being. You can not manipulate heroin. Many of the people who came into the methadone clinic I worked in were addicted to prescription opioids. You would never know by looking at them that they were addicts. I really respect how hard they were working to make their lives better. The stereotype of the homeless heroin addict somehow garners more pity from the uneducated. I don’t have the answers but handing out money isn’t helping our addicted brothers and sisters. Mental healthcare is the only step forward for the individual. Then comes jobs and affordable housing.

Great comment! Many people see the 'junkie' and that's all they see. They don't stop to think that there are far greater issues going on, beneath the addiction. Mental health problems, play a big part in most cases. In trying to relieve their pain and demons, they self medicate. A terrible cycle starts. Opiods. The death knell of so many who started out just taking them for physical pain, on the advice of their doctors. smh.

@@LDiamondz thank you. The saddest stories were those of the young people who were tossed out of their families. Sweet kids who found themselves homeless from an early age and very susceptible to addiction really pulled on my heartstrings. But they were trying after all, since they were part of the program I worked in. So many more are trapped in the cycle of pain and won’t accept help because of the darkness they find themselves in. I wanna preface my comment to you by saying you do awesome work and people like you are truly helping and I really respect you. I wanted to respond to you hoping you could give me some insight or helpful information. While I was fortunate enough to never be homeless, I was an opoid addict (first oxy pills then heroin) for a several years (been clean since march 2014). When I see homeless people, I tend to give them the cash I have, between $3-$20. And I really don't even attempt to assume what they could or will spend that money on because it's theirs now. My thought process was always that if they need a bottle of liquor to fall asleep tonight, outside in the cold, that doesn't seem totally unreasonable. I know many people who can't sleep in their perfectly warm and safe beds without a sleeping pill or a glass of bourbon at night (and I'm not saying that's okay either). I'm just pointing out that if so many people can't even get thru their day/sleep in their own homes without some sort of substance, it's understandable that homeless people might also feel the need to self medicate. Another thing I think, when handing over cash that might go to drugs, is that I really have the kind of money to help this person get mental health treatment (although I agree that would be far better) or the resources to get them a job, but I can give them something that will help them "get well", as they say. I know what it's like to be sick as hell from withdrawal and I can't imagine standing outside in the elements, having people scream rude stuff at me, all while sick. And I can help them "feel better" for the next 6 of 7 hours so they can panhandle without immense discomfort and make money to get a meal, maybe a motel room, and yes maybe another shot of heroin. but that's just their day to day life, and I feel like it's all I I do to help (although I also understand it is enabling). I hope you understand what I mean by that. And if you have any advice on how to be helpful in a more meaningful way to the homeless in my community (I live in Oklahoma City and there is a rather large homeless population here), I would really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

You do this and your charity goals are ongoing and accomplished regularly. Also if, all people did this our food bank and homeless shelters will be properly funded. This is also a good thing and does save you somewhat from giving based on emotions. I can honestly say I am able to walk by a pan handler without feeling guilty for not having given anything since I started giving a small amount monthly. I think it helps us get into the habit of charity as well. Also increase your charity goals each year by a small percentage. We must always remember those who face difficult times but we aught to do so rationally if they aren’t family. Also it is important to remember that you aren’t any better than the folks the money is intended to help. You could be them one day to. There for the Grace of God ... so practice charity, but don’t do it with guilt or emotion. Do it as a duty and as a habit

Some people really underestimate the power of addiction, or feel they are safe from it, since they can stop whenever they want! You also rarely get clean on your first attempt....or it is short-lived! When you do manage to get out of that hole, I think it's very important to remember how terrible you felt, how it changed you for the worst, all the stress, all the misery!! In my experience that is what helps you to not take that step backwards! We are humans though, so if you do fall back don't keep falling and stay positive and keep going forward, nobody is perfect!!

These people know what day of the week the offices are open for requests for assistance. They know how long you have to wait before you can go back to this office. When you work it just right you get one to “help” with your rent, one to “help” with your groceries or child care and one to “help” with your utility bills. It takes planning but it can be done and then you and your boyfriend get a weekend in Atlanta!

He was a big time drug kingpin in New York who killed most of his partners and ended up testifying against DC’s most feared Hitman ( Wayne Perry) for a lesser sentence. He was killed on Halloween this year after being released and going on witness protection. He broke witnesses protection and came back to New York after spending a few years in Maine.. some say he wanted to die and he was just riding around New York waiting for his final moments.

Veterans are the easiest to rehouse, as anyone who served at least 120 days active duty regardless of type.of discarge qualifies for SSVF vouchers, rapid rehousing and veteran homes. If a veteran doesn't engage in those programs, I don't put an incredible amount of time into helping. Addictions aren't treated by money or free houses. If they didn't take the money for themselves, he's like to use it all on drugs.

And he never asked if we or the pets were injured at all and my daughter and our pets needed treatment. We tried a go fund me for this reason. Be t we got very little money. I also lost my medical equipment. My IV pole and pump. And so much more. The reason people hesitated fo give was due to the jerks to are scammers. When a person is in active addiction their sole purpose is to get high and remain high . Second addiction is not a problem that can be helped nor solved with money, for a person to get clean they have to have a desire to do so, they will also need a large support group that is trained in helping people to get sober.
