My brother is really into mountain biking. He's been doing it for about three years (I think lol). He did have one big injury while doing it. He essentially slide off the path on accident and fell down a small embankment. He hit his head(thank God he was wearing a helmet), but still ended up with a small brain bleed and was in the hospital for like three weeks. Had memory issues for a little while afterwards but he's all good now. Still does it (much to the irritation of our mom and his wife).

full suspension mountain bikes are very expensive. if you want to get into the more expensive bikes i suggest finding them used, i own a couple kona mountain bikes and they weren't cheap but i got a much better deal for them used. i will say its a very fun sport to get into.

You can spend 10k on a bike if you push it all the way. Santa Cruz is actually an industry leader in carbon fiber and those frames are US made. When buying a mountain bike you are getting the obvious things like what the frame is made of and then the geometry of the bike should be inline with your intended uses and skill of the bike. As far as you are concerned, the price variance is mostly component value. The range is wide. Most people have moved to 1x drive trains with no front gear selection, only the rear cassette. Hydraulic disk brakes make a huge difference also aluminum stanchions on the front fork for weight savings. Those two are worth not going below that threshold.
