Long term homeless are not that way due to economics. It is 90% drugs and/or mental illness. Problem is, by basically decriminalizing drugs, we are enabling users to continue their drug lifestyle. Drug addicts would rather sleep on concrete rather than go into a shelter that has any rules. This is practically a death sentence with fentanyl. And we no longer have the ability to compel the seriously mentally ill to be institutionalized, even if we still had the beds.

They did that in the workhouse system. And it did work. They made everyone so miserable that the workhouse was only left with residents who were elderly or disabled. So then they started building institutions. They built some just for the intellectually disabled and some for the mentally ill. And that worked for a while. But then these places started getting uncomfortable but you can't torture disability out of people. Then everyone was let out of these places and the institutions were shut down. And then people were given money(SSI) but not enough to rent a place and still eat because....we don't want to make it comfortable to be disabled. And it's not comfortable because people are homeless..and what is your proposed solution again?

Earn your keep. Provide entertainment, schooling for their kids. Help them. I undersand, no one wants people in tents on or near their property. But lets ve compassionate and helpful

Homeless with drug/mental issues need to be forced into a treatment facility for the sake of their livelihood. Able bodied homeless should be offered resources to get a job and into affordable housing programs. Those who are able bodied and fail to be a contributing citizen should be off to jail.

Slab City out southeast of the Salton Sea and Niland CA is about to get a huge surge of new comers. Problem with LA's agenda is that they are doing this during the summer where it's over 100F everyday in Slab City. Talk about a civil war coming. These homeless may not vote, but they sure as hell will burn every last building down as they are evicted. Desperate people do violent things when bullied.

They comt take them down. I have to make contact with them for work and they cuss you out, threaten with violence, carry weapons, etc. I see children pass by and inhale drugs coming from tents. They havd to see ppl defacating nearby and a bunch of other craziness. Its frustrating bevause their are services available but a lot of them dont want to utilize them. Why would they when everything is handed to them for free. Plus easy access to drugs. It perpetuates the issue

Accountability and charity are not mutually exclusive. You can provide a helping hand but not a hand out. The problem with the current system and approach is that it's enabling bad behavior, which in turn, is imposing on the rights of everyone else. Also, its inhumane to let the homeless live in squalor and filth. So, what's needed is give them some support but require that they take it. Make it clear that the streets and sidewalks are not residences. Shelters may not be an ideal choice, but if they have no other options, that is where they must go.

yes it is true that some people in shelters use drugs i know of a few. plus back in 2008 when i was at father joe's security found several people with heroin needles in there arm in the bathroom passed out. plus back in 1998 9th circuit decision didn't help people who have homes in regards to homelessness. Martin v. Boise. abasically giving free reign to homelessness . by the way i have had my own place for 11 years now.

The homeless need to be removed permanently from the area. Not to be mean. Human Waste and garbage is left behind which causes rodent problem and smells. Alot of homeless are mentally ill and do not want to follow the rules of a shelter. Yes, substance abuse is a problem too. Each unhoused person has a seperate issue its either Illness, substance abuse or money.
