Others blame GOD for their losses, but fortunately I could surrender to him and let him help me. I also always could see it was not GOD taking them, it was themselfes taking them out with their careless behaviour. Very sad to watch this and cannot change the direction and outcome. Your relatives don't listen to you. I fought like a dog to outlive my mom so my brother wouldn't get all the money. He just asked me what year we went skiing in austria. I told him not to go but to put the money on his mortgage which is still very high. He just makes excuses. He thinks he is Frugal but he eats lunch out everyday. I don't think most people can see their own behavior

My sister is schizophrenic and (when having an episode) has done and said nasty things, but we still try to help her. It's easy to walk away from the mentally ill, or write them off, which is why so many end up on the streets.

Dear sweet kind Sister hang in there. The hardest thing I ever did was start saying no to my Little brother and his kids. Even when i gave it as gifts it would hurt my feelings that they would squander what i would give them due to really poor choices. Now i can hear them carry in about lack of money and just say oh so sorry you are having problems and just be a cheerleader for them. I hope you find peace as you go. Know it will take a while to see you made the right choice.

Reminds me, a bit, of my family’s situation. My mother is 75, “May” have some dementia, but is likely more NPD. Although I have a financial interest for inheritance, my mother has decided to scapegoat me and give my needy sister a home. Mom stopped caring for her own teeth, stopped filing taxes and, while I’m making an exit out of the chaos, I’m likely expected to fix everything. Can’t worry with what I can’t stop.

I am going through the same thing with my mother. I am so overwhelmed and ready to walk away. My mother is now living with me and before that she was living out of her car for 2 years. My entire house stink because she is here. She doesn't want to bath or wash her clothes. Her hair is matted and her teeth are rotting. She does have a full time job but she blows every dime of her money. I want to put her in an assistant living facilities but she doesn't make enough money to pay for it. She tried to rent an apartment but she has bad rental history so no one wants to rent to her. I'm going to talk to her doctor to see if I can get her diagnosis and treated. I just don't know what else to do.

I talk to my mom's doctor but they were no help. They don't really like to deal with my mom because she is a hand full. They told me they could not force my mom to take their help. My mom decided to move out. I am not sure where she is staying and she will not tell me. I did invite her over for Thanksgiving, but she spent most of the time sleeping. We didn't have much interaction. She has become like a stranger. All I can do is pray for her because she has rejected my help.

Thank you. The money was gone very quickly and she's close to rock bottom but she wants someone to bail her out, again. Unfortunately our Dad usually did and in the process he was enabling her. She will have to really hit rock bottom and make serious changes to turn her life around.

Honestly, personality disorders can be controversial. And the beliefs, behaviors and patterns that are deemed problematic can be related to trauma. I still think it's important to have boundaries and not put up with abusive behavior. But, I'm not convinced slapping personality disorder labels on people is always helpful. Even more so when their behavior is odd rather than abusive. Like I don't blame "schizoid personality disorder" people for being loners. If they can be happy that way, it might actually be a superpower in a world that contains narcissists.

The bar for guardian ad litem is high. The mental capacity needed to inherit money is low. You cannot rip up a trust because the beneficiary is a homeless druggie. The court may give her the distribution. I am not a lawyer.

What some people dont realize is Drug addiction isnt Just a Simple decision for everyone to stop. It literally remaps your brain to NEED it Biologically, and some people go through Trauma so bad they wanted to escape through drugs and wound up stuck in a never ending cycle. You need an external force to help such people and sadly sometimes even that isnt enough ☹

For those of you saying that the sister is an addict-maybe she is, maybe she is not. The bottom line is that it is not anyone's business to speculate about it, discuss it and try them both in the court of public opinion. It is a very sensitive situation. It would be tough for anyone. I hope that none of you ever have a family member who has addictions or mental illness and if you do I pray that you are shown more grace and kindness than you are giving to both of these women in the comments below.

If she continues to get an SSI check plus earn some type of measly interest off the balance of the 115K ( 3-4% ) , possibly get a part time job, she may be able to scratch out some kind of existence. I smell a rat. We really do not know the full condition of that sister. Losing an inheritance for not brushing teeth and smoking? You've got to be kidding me that's half the population. I have a bachelor of science degree in human development from a state college. When I hear stories like this, I am glad I never wasted the money to pursue a master's degree. For one I am against prescription drugs that psychiatrists prescribe because of side effects and addiction. Second, this female may be a drug addict or alcoholic. They are so resistant to treatment. It is not wise to giver her sister money. Sister gets disibility payment for mental illness. Is she a drug addict asks Dave? She lives in her car in Houston. Age 38. She cannot be pursuaded states Ramsey. Consult an attorney. When govt throws money at these programs, they do not work.

If she really cared she would have never let her sleep in her car. She would have gotten her mental health and addiction treatment. Then take the inheritance and use it to pay for an apartment. Just because she has a mental illness does not mean she is incompetent. Of course she is making bad decisions. However, why was she not helped a long time ago?

Mental illness is a real problem. She may be on drugs but the root of the problem must be addressed. She requires care and oversight. My brother is mentally incapacitated and he cannot manage money. Most people here aren't thinking of all the possibilities. Mentally ill people need structured help.

likely far too late, but in order to maintain the inheritance and disability, then there's a specific investment / trust for the disabled that will cover (teeth, glasses, specific managed expenses)

It isn't that she doesn't have teeth, it's that with losing her job and moving to houston, one of the most expensive places to live in Texas (comparable to Chicago cost of living and not great pay) and dentists that charge over a thousand dollars for crowns which only cost them $20 to make....ya you do the math. Stop judging people. Our society and economy and businesses and greed have created this situation. Even if the woman had a job, tried to save enough to get dental work done....it's more expensive the more structural integrity of the teeth is lost. That being said, most people I know to have their work done are quoted roughly 20k to 30k to just restore what natural teeth she has left. And Medicaid doesn't cover dental in texas. I'm sure it's the same in Florida. I think new York is one of the few that does for adults.

Think a little, Steve. They could buy a house for her to live in, set it up so she can't sell it and check on her to make sure she doesn't get taken advantage of. Her disability payments could pay for her incidentals and she'd probably qualify for food stamps. I know people who did this for a schizophrenic sister when their mother died and left money.
