Homeless to Harvard is Liz Murray's uplifting motivational story. In this speech, she talks about what she did to move past the barriers and ordeals of her younger life to become a Harvard graduate.
She grew up in a home with a drug-addicted and HIV positive parents. When she was just 9 years old she started working at a grocery store bagging groceries.
Her mother died when she was 15 of AIDS-related disease and became homeless at the age of 15 when her father moved to a shelter. She found herself living on the streets and eating from garbage dumps.
She did her homework from the subways and started high school late at the age of 17 but doubled her course load to finish within 2 years.
She received a NY Times scholarship and was accepted into Harvard. She released a book called Breaking Night memoir of this time.
Her story is uplifting and a reminder of no matter how grave one's circumstances are they can achieve great things. She is now a successful motivational speaker.
