I know a woman whose wealthy grown kids feel too poor to help her, with spendy wives or expensive divorce going on and their own kids at expensive college and she tells them, everything. The county cut her food stamps, again. A cousin then came to visit her and lo and behold, he talked her into visiting a Rehab place, for a "rest." Now, she is stuck in there but still thinks her house will be there, if she decides to go, home. Meanwhile, she doesn't know where the cousin is and her kids, still don't call her. There are millions of people living this way in America - and some are even worse off. I don't agree with her that she doesn't want her children to know how she's living. Parents take care of their children -- and children take care of their parents. We're living in the worst times - and I'm 83 yrs old. Have never seen so many people struggling - no place to live - begging for food. Many of these people worked all their lives -- are old; have been ill or disabled; no family. @JimmyHagerstrom Жыл бұрын
But the truth ofcourse is much more nuanced. There is not much communism at all in europe in fact, capitalism is ruling 95% of Europe, if not more. Sure, the European countries that has stronger GDP per capita than you guys is all countries that have higher taxes than the US. Ireland, Norway and Denmark are all in the top-10 and they have in common that their taxes is (very) high, especially compared to the US. I guess that´s one of the reasons you like to think of Scandinavia as commie-nightmares, because of the taxes. Still the people in scandinavia has better economy than americans. The idea is that it is cheaper to take care of the people that "fall of" society when they are down, because it´s the humane way to do it, and in the end it´s a lot cheaper for the society that everybody chips in so we can make sure that ALL Swedes have the right to live worthy lives, no matter who you are or where you are in life. You always have the right to eat and to have somewhere to be safe and sleep at night. It´s less expensive both in the short and the long run to take care of people than it is to take care of them when they got even more damaged, or in many cases, are stuck in a circle of destruction. Homeless people cost A LOT for society to deal with, the daily crimes many of them choose to commit, short-term hospitalization and medical attention they need when they get pneumonia or hurt in the streets, as they very often do, especially woman is very prone the be hurt physically and mentally. And then ofcourse the long-term consequences of homelessness who people aquire in a very short amount of time on the street, a year on the street is enough for many to never come back to employment. So not only are they having mental issues and physical damage that will cost society a lot of many all their lives, they will also never pay taxes, and society will have to feed them. And the money the society loses on just ONE person that goes down this path is astronomical, millions and millions again. And in many cases this could have been avoided, the person didn´t need to get their body and mind trashed that badly, if they would have got support when they needed it. This is not just speculation from my side. There is a whole lot of research made that supports what i just said about the economy of homelessness. There is consesus that this is the truth. Americans very often speak about being angry about "lazy people that receives benefits and take advantage of the tax-payers money, they just dont want to work and the communist-government just let´s them cash out every week to buy food, drugs and ciggarettes receiving housing and everything a person can need without doing anything at all, just laughing at how dumb the system is". And people are angry about them having to pay taxes and that other people get free food-stamps. They should also work for their food like everybody else. But they dont seem to understand what happens to THEM if you just let people starve out on the streets. They will also live beside you in your town, all your life. If you let them sleep out in the snow and starve, you create a very damaged group of people that will have very little boundries and very little concern about themselves and others. And you see this happening all over the US now, fentanyl and homelessness destroys towns everywhere. Ofcourse everyone should have to work for their food. But if a person are diagnosed with a temporary or chronic health issue by the doctor and isn´t able to provide for themselves, then that´s how it is and we have to trust the doctors, right? The question really is what a human is worth and how we want our mother/sister/wife/daughter get taken care of if i pass away and she becomes sick for example, do we think that she should have a safe bed to sleep in and food every day or do we think she should be left on the streets by herself to deal with her mental illness or whatever it might be? Drugaddiction. Cancer. Do we think every daughter in our country should have a bed and food every day? No matter who they are and what their history is, does it matter or do want our daughters to have that no matter what happens? A bed and food? Is it worth to give away half a percent of our income to guarantee that all our daughters have that in case things happen? Half a percent and we know that our daughter and our neighbours daughter too never will have to sleep on a train getting used and abused by the creatures of night? What do we think our people is worth? Is the money the most important thing? That everyone who work get as many dollars and cents as possible for themselves and their daughters? Or is the daughters the most important thing? Are our daughters worth food and not being r*ped on the subway no matter what they do or not in life? Or not? Because... The argument kinda eats itself in a way. When you say that you dont want to work hard every day and see some lazy jerk go collect his food-stamps for the week. That´s not have you want to spend your hard owned money, and that is very understandable. But. If the money is the important thing here, and you dont care if some lazy jerk who doesn´t want to work because of some PTSD he blames his lazyness on, let him sleep in the snow hungry until he learns a lesson. Thats not my problem. I´ve worked for everything i have in life and he should too! IF i should pay taxes then i want them to go to the old americans who worked for this country all their lives and now they are 95 and haven´t enough pension to get themselves new glasses so they cant even read or watch tv anymore! That´s where the money should go!! If that´s your opinion. That you want your society to have a better economy so it can help people who deserves it. A very valid opinion.

She’s so strong, when I was homeless I had escaped from a house of horrors situation with my family where my siblings controlled the environment in that home and the parents were the enablers, just to explain I was attacked daily, almost stabbed on several occasions, had heavy metal canned goods thrown past my head, my food was poisoned various times, my lights were taken out my room, my windows were covered, my door had a makeshift lock on the outside to keep me locked in, I had to pee in a bucket, I couldn’t come out unless I was being monitored.. I was verbally abused, called an “IT,” and that I wasn’t human and that I deserved to be unalived, so when I did escape I was homeless for a year.. It’s not just drugs or alcohol for my situation it was abuse and being homeless as hard as it is, was better than constantly being abused and attacked, homelessness is very hard because I didn’t trust too many after getting out that home but I had to couch surf with the craziest people one of them being a verbally abusive alcoholic that would peek in on me while I was showering, he was awful.. I was in the same situation as her I was staying in a hotel or couch surfing.. The shelters are a scarier than being on the street sometimes because there’s actual women in that place who’ll rob or attack you and I agree with her, she loss her husband and loss everything after that.. I had to escape from a family that abused me😢 please never judge a book by the cover, like she said, I hope people reach out to her and help, she’s a strong woman and I know how hard it is sweetie❤ I’m in a good place now and I no longer am homeless, I’m thankful but I try to help other homeless people because I was once in their shoes and I know how hard it is being homeless 😢

When my grandma got old, she moved in with one of her seven daughters. But all of her daughters pitched in to help, financially, the older she got. When my mom got older, she moved in with me. This is common in my family with my siblings and cousins. We’ve been taking in our elderly for generations because they took care of us. It really isn’t an intrusion but it is a mindset. If my parent or child were homeless and they were living on the streets instead of coming to me for help, I’d be so extremely heart broken.

This is why a social safety net and social security are so important and the US doesn't have a robust enough one! I wonder if she would qualify for foodstamps atleast, but she should be at the front of a queue for housing as she is disabled and a woman on her own.

But whenever you mention a welfare state system like the UK, Americans start yelling about "Socialism". I have known all my life that I will NOT end up in a position like this poor woman, even though I don't own a house, or a car, and have a minimal pension, thanks to our welfare system.

@@powderandpaint14 we have a robust welfare system. Only government benefits first, the people get the leftovers. That’s what needs fixed but it’s not going to get fixed because the American people can’t recognize the consequence’s in our elections.

This woman evidently needs support and psychological help. She hasn’t gotten past her husband‘s death and she couldn’t deal with everyday life after his passing. Where were her kids/relatives/friends and neighbors? How many of „her“ are out there? She doesn’t know how to take care of herself.
@镜云和 Жыл бұрын
yes, her real problem is her attachement to her husband. She cannot let her husband go. Financial problem is just very minor. I enperienced her problem when I was 30s. It would be better to experice hardship when a person is still young. So when he/she is old, wisdom learned in youth can help alone.

I disagree. For example I am an only child. Then my mother fell ill and died. Immediately after this my father too fell ill an is now in a care home.Year now he needs care 24/7. As the daughter I only take care of the organisation. I have to work and earn money for my own living.

❤ please, go to your children. They wouldn't be "taking care of you." You have wonderful gifts of wisdom, life experience, running a household, raising children. You can be with the baby when they shop, have date night, need time alone, or go back to work. It's cheaper to add a person to a household than for one person to create and maintain a household. Your Income can help support the intergenerational household of you, your child, in-law, and grandchild. I pray your family sees this video! And you become safe. Another example of: "There but for the grace of God go I".

No one ask to be cared for. We pooled our money together to live. We still have that property today and two of my aunts live there. I want to keep this tradition in my family. We both have life insurance in amounts that would pay for a funeral and the remaining amount on the house if something should happen. You really need to plan for the what ifs and retirement. I know it's hard, but you need to be honest with your kids. Unless there is a history of abandonment or abuse, no one wants their mother on the streets. It can be temporary as you go through social services, which I know are overburdened and need more attention, but it's better than the streets. I get how she feels, I do, but just let your kids know, if nothing else for safety reasons.

I had a job, but there were LITERALLY no places to live....always going door to door, asking people if they knew of anyone that needed a roommate, trying to find an apt....the answer always no. All of my toiletries came from Dollar Tree. Life was never meant to be lived alone.
