This documentary really gives me hope that it's possible to combat homelessness. It's not easy and it's not simple but at the end of the day the stories of the people show that it's worth it. Thank you for showing us how we can help contribute to the solution!!

Thanks Aaron, there are so many ways to be a part of solution. Many of the organizations featured in this video are highlighted in the description above. You can visit the links attached to find out how you can personally get involved!

I do believe Homelessness can be solved,.. but the individuals themselves have to be willing and active participants in their own salvation. Whatever Services or Processes or Methods we build or provide,. have to have checks and balances and monitoring and validation built into them (proving the people taking those services are doing the things they need to step by step become self-sufficient again and productive members of society). Allowing people to continue to float anonymously and circularly from shelter to shelter,. isn't ever going to solve the problem.

I see this an awful lot. While rules, yes, are needed it society.. And as a member of the unhoused community, this I believe is a big starting point for so much stigma. But why must the unhoused face so much scrutiny for BASIC human needs. The current state of the system really plays all that already and I feel as though it is a large gate in the gatekeeping of whether people can find it in them selves to reduce their dignity to receive what should be a human right. It is complicated, yes. But are these rules and standards,complicated processes, and so on perpetuated onto the housed? Even if unintentional, I think the notion reduces us. We are all human after all. And I mean all that in the most constructive way possible. Something to hopefully ponder upon. And lastly of course allowing people to float shelter to shelter is not an option or a means of correcting homelessness. The only thing that's gonna do that is housing. And all the much needed social supports that allow one to carry a meaningful and productive life. For what that means to them.
@jasonnugent963 Жыл бұрын
@@kaelacoughlin1988 Are those things perpetuated on the "Housed" ?... Yes, in most cases they are. I just moved from Colorado to Portland, OR,. and in order to successfully get an Apartment< I had to do a Credit Check, Background Check, Renters History, etc. If my personal history had some criminal instances or my Renters history showed a string of me destroying apartments,.. that would have made it a lot harder for me to get an Apartment (and rightfully so). Landlords don't want to Rent to people who are "risks". (might host criminal behavior, might damage their apartment, etc). Somehow there has to be consequences (or Encouragement) to incentivize people to behave and follow the rules. If not,. then nobody follows the rules and society continues to swirl downwards.

@@jasonnugent963 yes, absolute truths you are saying. And it just goes to show how hard it is when we have privilege, (what should be a right, affordable housing for all, we can't say we don't have a way or the means, jus gonna take a shift of priorities on the humantarian level) but even if we work so hard for it, the privilege to uphold a roof over your head. All it takes is one slip. And anyone can end up here. It's deeper than an individual problem. There is a system against all of and unfortunately, those that end up at the bottom are disregarded. All I am saying is that the system is unfair and rigged against the most vulnerable. And without food, clothing, water, and basic housing. It is asking people to dig themselves out of something not short of a death sentence in a lot of cases. We should be able to provide housing and if there need be different levels or tiers in which we classify people's capabilities and impose rules that interfere with people's basic human dignity... Idk. I just think we can do better than that. If given the proper support and tools and resources for all. I think everyone would be able to come from a place of personal growth and society as a whole would be better for that. Sometimes it jus takes a given hand and asking nothing in return.

@@kaelacoughlin1988 If you owned property, eould you Rent it out to a complete stranger without checking their Name, ID, Background etc?… what if they trash it and disappear and then its on your cost to repair it. Do you Rent it out to the 2nd person, what if they do the same ?… How many times will you circular do this until you start ID & Background checking people before Renting to them?…. “asking nothing in return” just sets you up to be victimized. Nobody rides for free. Everything has a cost.

@@jasonnugent963 yes, that is true under our current system. I agree no one wants to lose their investments. However, sometimes, financial interest needs be where the heart is. It is not a perfect system nor the one we live in now. I'm jus saying when human life is at risk over capital then that is a problem of a humantarian level and that needs be addressed. Our current model got us here. Society needs a shift away from what is best for the dollar and look at what is best for the heart. All I'm saying. Your points are valid, jus feel it's going to take something deeper than jus keeping the old clock going. We need that change to come from everyone from within.

One of the best documentaries on this subject I've seen. The policies coming from San Francisco's city government have been half measures with no ongoing follow through. The reason this health crisis has been allowed to get this bad is that there simply isn't the will from the city to deal with it. They set up Safe Sleeping Sites, then close it. They set up a Linkage Center, then close it with no clear Plan B mapped out. We're finally seeing the homeless crisis impacting populations that the city DOES care about - companies in the downtown area - and finally it is getting attention. But this has been a crisis for years.

This means a lot, thank you for your kind words! And yes, effectively addressing the homelessness and health crisis certainly requires more consistent follow through and a stronger will from the city and people. It is unfortunate that for the homelessness crisis to truly become a top priority in our city, it must first affect downtown businesses and others that the city seems to care more about. Let's continue to spread more awareness and advocate for effective homelessness prevention and solutions.

@@paulmcdonough1093 can’t support you if you don’t support yourself. You have to be an endorsement of your personal brand for me to show support. Just like a company who wants customers, they create a brand that you can stand behind (support.) I stand by kicking the world in it’s balls…that begins with self love. If you don’t love yourself then I can love you. I cannot love you, more than you can love yourself. I know that you don’t love yourself because you’ve mad your bed hard. Now I’m with helping folks that have gone beyond that point. But this can’t continue. In this world there are gonna be some winners and losers…but give yourself a shot. I’m not even against drug use, but when that drug use begins to make your life harder than it needs too. Time to give it up or seek help. You can’t say help everyone because some people like to be vagabond and off grid. But….if you live in a campsite…filled with trash and human waste…are you showing yourself love by making yourself smell shit all day? No. What would be self love is making sure you sleep comfortably and are safe. So even at a campsite, the area should be clean and safe. Even it’s it a common practice with the people at the site. There should be an arrogance. “Even if I’m homeless …I’m not gonna sleep around dog shit and trash.” I could go on and on.

The SF homeless budget is about $700 million this year. And rising. A ridiculous amount of money that is, according to this video, not fixing the crisis. The issue now is that the government is unwilling to lose that huge revenue stream, so has no incentive to solve the homeless crisis, only to perpetuate it. Now THAT would be a useful video to make - why is so much being raised and spent with so little result?

It's interesting that according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, for every Homeless person there are 555 people who are not Homeless. I'm sure that if those 555 people would just work a little harder and reduce their standard of living just a little bit we could provide for the Homeless. H.U.D. states that only 0.18% of the population is Unhoused or Homeless. The math is 0.18% x 555 = One person. I live very well on a 2 year Community College Education. Couldn't we send the Homeless to Community College for free and then hook them up with a 60-80 hour a week full-time job like the rest of us have. Just Sayin that it's been working for me for 50 year's. I had 3 newspaper routes when I was 13 years old and I got my first full-time 40 hr/wk job at the age of 15. At 18 I served 4 years in the Military. Life is the Hardest job that we'll ever have.
