Interesting in the 50tys mom and grandma used vinegar to sour the milk ,don't remember the cream of tartar but I was just a kid who knows 😉 Have not made any my self but think I'll give them a try

Buttermilk is something that isn't even offered at the grocery stores where I live. I have to buy the powdered buttermilk in a can (and add water) or put lemon juice or vinegar in regular milk.

You do realize that baking powder is just making soda that has cornstarch in it, right? It was done to stretch out the baking soda. The only active ingredient in baking powder is baking soda. All other ingredients are just to prevent clumping and to stretch out the baking soda.
