HOMEMADE BANANA PUDDING | FROM SCRATCH | OLD-FASHIONED | Chef Lorious

Old Fashioned Southern Banana Pudding. Homemade from scratch. This is the one grandma used to make. Never from a box, all homemade!

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups sugar
2 - 12 oz. cans evaporated milk
6 Tbsps. AP Flour
4 egg yolks, well beaten
4 Tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
5 bananas
1 box Nilla Wafers
Directions:
1. Combine sugar, milk and flour over medium heat. Continue stirring until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Be sure to keep stirring so the mixture doesn't burn or stick. (About 20 minutes or so.)
2. Slowly add the egg yolks to the milk mixture. Stir constantly. Add the yolks 1 - 2 Tbsp. at a time.
3. Remove completely from heat. Stir in butter and vanilla.
4. In a separate dish begin assembling the banana pudding. (9 x 13 dish is recommended).
5. Assemble in the following order ending with Nilla Wafers on top:
Custard - wafers - bananas - REPEAT
6. Cover and chill. Overnight is best, but at least 3 -4 hours.
7. Top with whipped cream and crushed Nilla Wafers.
8. Try to eat at least 1 piece before it's gone!

THANK YOU!! I finally found someone who makes banana pudding just like my grandma! You never fully appreciate people until they pass away and when my grandma passed, she took all her wonderful recipes with her. I just assumed, like a lot of people, that she would always be there. Her banana pudding was something we looked forward to every holiday (because it took so long, like you said, she would only make it on holidays) and when she passed away, not one person could remember how she made it! I even watched her every time she made it, when I was little but could not remember exactly. I have looked at recipe after recipe for YEARS and could not find one even close to it. So I refused to attempt to make it, to not be disappointed. The only difference my grandma would put egg whites on the top and bake til brown on top.This has brought tears to my eyes because now I can make it myself and surprise my family and have the recipe to pass on to my son!

This is a great recipe. I do mine slightly different. I put all my ingredients cold including egg yolks, milk, sugar , etc in pot and stir over low low heat for at least 15 minutes or till thick. Then I take it off the stove, let it sit for 1 minute, then add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1/4 teaspoon of lemon extract, stir and pour over the bananas and cookies. Depending on whom I’m making it for, I’ll use the whites to make meringue. Um um good.

This is awesome! My dad made banana pudding from scratch when I was a child. Always from scratch, never boxed pudding. Of course, as a youngster, we never think to ask for recipes. I was in the army for the last ten years all round the the USA country. Now I back here in the down south. I went to a southern food restaurants where they were serving Banana Pudding however their Banana Pudding was so good. I told myself I can make Banana Pudding but only by using instant Pudding. I always make mine with box pudding because it is how I like it. People love my pudding and then judge me for not making it homemade. I know it is weird, but I have never liked homemade pudding. I felt like the sweetness overpowered the cookies. It is not that I don't want to, I just always thought it was too sweet. It doesn't look like yours will be overly sweet. I will try your recipe and see if I like it. lol Then I will have two recipes, one for lazy days and then the other for when I am not feeling so lazy.

I really admire you ladies with the patience to make your own custard when making your banana pudding. I myself have never attempted it but I can imagine it tastes amazing. I admit that I don't plan on ever making my pudding from scratch because honestly using the box is just simply too easy and my final product is amazing but I am glad that the recipe is here in case I ever feel adventurous and want to give it a try.

You got this!! Take your time with the eggs. If you’re not sure when you’re done, just put the custard through a strainer to remove any pieces. I have faith in you!!!
