I like your mill. I own a professional saw mill and Ive sawed millions of board feet of lumber on band mills. My first mill was a cutting edge so I know a few things. rule 1 stop banging in wedges they don't do anything the blade will not pinch because of the wood fiber just ahead of the blade. 2 you need some down pressure on your blade after it comes away from the tire. set your guides about a fourth of an inch lower than your tires. You will get longer blade life and a better cut. make sure your blade is level with the rails your log sits on. Put a solid ruler on top of the blade and measure the front of the ruler and back height from your rails and make sure its even with the rails. Also make sure your car- edge that holds your motor is level with the rails. And of course make sure your rails are level. that will stop your blade from lifting in the cut. so your saw blade guides need to be adjustable as well because sawmills are constantly moving under all the apposing forces. I would also put a cage around the tires and blade for safety. Ive had them come off before. that would hurt and possibly wound you very severely.

+David Lee Regarding the cage; I agree. I understand real life we don't go nuts with covers and shields, but that band seemed a bit too out in the open. An arm is a twing for that thing.

Everyone knows that a bandsaw mill will cut wood. What they really would like to see is close up views of the construction details of the machine. 8 mins of watching a band saw, is little better than watching paint dry . A useful view, to start with, would be the rise and fall mechanism for adjusting the height of the blades, Next, another view that would be appreciated would be the drive mechanism(s) between the motor and the wheels..

As long as the blade is sharpened correctly there should be no need for wedges in the kerf. The blade is narrow enough that the blade will not drag at all, even if the kerf closes relatively close to the blade. I've cut hundreds of thousands of BF of lumber on a bandsaw mill and never used a wedge.

I was thinking - What about a length of pipe between the log & the board, dragged along behind the saw by a chain attached to each end of the pipe? You'd lose a very small amount of ease of forward movement to parasitic drag, but I'm guessing it'd be barely noticeable, if at all. Plus, no more stopping to tap in a wedge. Just throwing a thought out there. Beautiful machine, BTW.

I like the machine. No doubt there are talented imaginative people all around us that can make something out of virtually anything. It's impossible to tell how fast the wheels are spinning. I Can' t tell from a video screen if the wood is very hard making it slow to cut or if the blade is maybe a little fast. Great job on your sawmill !

I am getting the impression that you want to show how clever you are, but you don't want us to see how your mill is set up on the back side. So from the stand point of how the mill is driven , except for the "final" , how the mill is driven is anybody 's guess. Like watching paint dry!

Very impressive work! Adding the wedged seems to slow the process down a lot though. Could you not add a static blade to the rear of your box frame that will lift the wood a little and stop it pinching the blade? You would have to make sure it enters the work ok at the start, but after that you wouldn't need to stop until you reach the end.

Why did you drive the wedges so deeply into the gap?. As I see it, all your wanting to do, is keep the board from pinching the blade, correct? I would think this might be bad on the board, as to consistency. Maybe not.

Very crude design consider it a prototype, but job well done none the less, maybe a couple more blade guards and some method to help cool the saw blade while operating. For example oil drip valve mounted right above saw blade with a oil tank bolted on top of frame hose connected down to valve (gravity fed) basically cools saw and improves cutting ability assisting saw in final cut. Just as how a chain saw needs chain bar oil.

Instead of banging a wedge in the cut, which isn't a bad idea, how about getting a spray bottle with kerosene. When the blade starts to sound like it's going to bind up, give it a good squirt. The kerosene will dissolve the pitch from the blade and it'll be smooth sailing for a few feet more.
@fakiirification
@fakiirification 9 жыл бұрын
+Karl Pearson Or maybe a second dripper system at a much lower flow rate to give the blade a drip of kerosene per second and just zip through it.
@KLP99
@KLP99 9 жыл бұрын
+fakiirification - Yeah, the drop would be better. That way, if you are busy, you don't miss a spray, plus better coverage of the blade without the wide-ish waste of more than necessary a sprayer might put on the blade. Good thought.
