Dan Erlewine needs to pull the tuner grommets/bushings from the peghead of this old Gibson. The lacquer is already damaged, and pulling the bushings can yank finish off too. Dan invents a way to hold the finish down while the bushing comes up.

None of us will ever be as cool as Dan. That drawer full of templates was like looking into the wizards bag!! So cool!! You know he's forgotten more things than the rest of us have ever done.

Neat. I have no relevant plans for my own projects, but I really enjoy watching these anyway - just appreciating the ingenuity and practiced hand. Good stuff.

The tool you guys sell for this job at first glance seems a bit expensive, but if you do this often enough then the value is there, but I think the fact you guys also put this information out there pretty much proves that your priorities and customers best interest are very well aligned.

Dan, I made a similar tool to remove the bushings on my LP, but I filed the hex into a piece of 3/8" lexan. It works like your plywood hex, but you can see the bushing as it rises.

I like my Delrin bushing press die a lot better than wood. Wood is soft enough for stuff like metal filings to get imbedded in it and that scratches guitars. Delrin is very tough, hard, slick and it's so slick most glues will not stick to Delrin. Being glue won't stuck, my block doubles as a gluing caul for repairing blown out bits of wood and veneer around tuner bushings.

I love the random pieces of acrylic in that drawer ... he doesn't even stick a piece of blue tape on the acrylic to identify what they are for

How do you determine if the finish is lacquer or something else? Thanks

Very clever, neat solution.I wonder if one of those cheap flat, punched hole bicycle multi spanners would achieve the same result?.Hmmm. off to the tool box i go.

That would work, but there's the unacceptable risk of indenting the wood with the metal under pressure. You have to think he's working on someone's property. The ply's large area disperses the pressure and it's a softer material - so shouldn't leave any mark on the headstock.

What a waste of time and materials. Just use the right sized 1/4" drive socket with a ring of cork around the opening to protect the finish.
