I use the dog proof traps so i cant have very sticky bait,but what I use is about 2 cups of cereal such as captain crunch or fruit loops, mix about 2 table spoons of powdered gatorade, and a little bit of powdered sugar. put some in the trap and then squirt fish oil around the trap

Lake here in the pnw, I add maple syrup to peanut butter like here. Then any fish as he said pretty much. Mash it up and place it in a nice spot for shoo-**cough**trapping.

I just buy a 12$ bag of chicken scratch and 1$ bottle of syrup from the dollar tree. I put a few drops of syrup on my dogproofs once a week. Chicken scratch comes in such a big quantity it lasts all trapping season setting dog proofs. Works great every year. Smell is the biggest key

What do you do with the trapped raccoons? In my county there is a season, but if they are causing damage they can be taken by legal means. I don't know what that means actually. Also, I had to clean up a raccoon latrine behind our fence (in the suburbs). We have fruit trees. After I cleaned it up with gloves, I found out how dangerous the feces is. They carry a roundworm that if accidentally ingested can grow to 1/3 inch by almost 8 inches and they will roam around your body in the muscles, spinal cord, brain, and eyes. There is no effective treatment if you get it. It is very dangerous to toddlers. Also the eggs last in the soil and feces for over 10 years. Winter will not kill the eggs. The only thing that will kill the eggs is fire or boiling water. I had to carry buckets and buckets of boiling water to pour over the places where the raccoons had pooped. Pure bleach will not kill the roundworm eggs. It was as much as a cow pie. Anyway I have seen that a county in Illinois made a marshmallow cream bait that had a deworming medication in it and it reduced the percentage of roundworm eggs in the feces. Can anyone suggest a good way to hide medication in marshmallow cream and what kind of container would you use to protect it from the elements, but the raccoon would eat all of it? Thank you.

Buy a jar of cut shad used for catching catfish. You want fishy smell? Shew-ee.. Shad is the king! Mix that with some gravy train dog food, waffle syrup, and vegetable oil and it's the bomb.
