What type of hair can be washed with it
@metamud86867 жыл бұрын
Hi Nina / ninja, Thanks so much for sharing. You asked for tips, so here goes: The lye can be neutralized by a mild acid, e.g., white vinegar. So keep a bottle of it (really cheap white vinegar) nearby. If you get splashed on your skin immediately rinse with a bit of vinegar. Or put the vinegar in a spray bottle and spray on lye that splashes on your skin. Obviously wear goggles as suggested because you do not want to spray vinegar into your eyes after they get hit with lye. ^_^

what are the alternatives to avocado oil, and can i exclude the powders?
@theminimalistninja6 жыл бұрын
Please note, this recipe was calculated using a soap calculator and the oils mentioned are the oils necessary to make this recipe work. If you want to use a different oil then you would need to use a soap calculator to re-calculate the correct rations for each and every oil. It is, therefore, not recommended to use different oils UNLESS you do the math. By swapping one oil with a different one you'd risk wasting time and effort as the result would probably be a mediocre product at best. Yes, you can indeed leave out the powders, but the avocado oil is necessary in this recipe.

My hair is thick and more to the dry side, since I went no poo, and this recipe is more for oily hair. What ingredient should I take it out of your list? Thank you!
@theminimalistninja5 жыл бұрын
None. Unfortunately, making soap is nothing like baking or cooking. :S If you take one ingredient out and replace it with another it may not end up being soap at all. You'd need to use a soap calculator to calculate the correct measurements for each and every ingredient all over again as chancing one ingredient (oil), will change the whole recipe. This recipe is for all hair types and I highly recommend giving it a try! :)

HI there, love the soap and omg love those 2 1/2 quart buckets, here in new zealand buckets are made of really hard plastic, those look awesome and easy to work with. Anyway just want to know if I am able to use kaolin and bentonite clays in this soap as it is too expensive to purchase neem and aritha powder, also during the video clip you mention melt all the oils and wax, but i didnt see wax in the recipe, did you cook your soap on the stove or just used the saucepan, how did you get that deep burgundy colour in your soap batter looks awesome. Thanks for sharing.
@theminimalistninja6 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I mentioned wax, because some people do use it in their soaps to make it even harder. I personally don't use wax in my shampoo bars because I use them primarily on my face and hair. I don't have any experience with kaolin clays and can, therefore, not comment on it. In regards to Bentonite clay though, that I've used in this exact same recipe. Use the exact same ratio and you are good. I believe I did show the process of melting the oils in this video (I haven't watched in a while, ha!). The soaps are actually brown (it may look reddish due to the light?) and the color was achieved my adding the mentioned herbal powders! :) Hope that helps! :)

@theminimalistninja7 жыл бұрын
Most soaps need four weeks to cure! :) Any "real" soap needs those weeks to complete the saponification process, during which fats, water, and lye turn into actual soap that can be used on the body! :) The expiration date is dependent on what exactly you put in your soap! :)

Chemistry lesson: Acids and bases (like lye) dissociate (break apart, chemically) when they come into contact with water, releasing a lot of energy. Luckily, water acts as kind of an "energy absorber". This means that if you add water to lye all of that lye is going to start releasing a lot of energy very quickly, but if you add it the other way around, the water will absorb the released energy. This is why you add the lye slowly. Also, once it's been fully mixed into the water, it is okay to add to the oils.

Hey! No I don't. It's important to do the math right and to add the exact amount of lye needed. We use a lye calculator to determine that and as long as this step is done right you'll end up with a mild soap. Changrin Valley has really valuable information on their website about it all: www.chagrinvalleysoapandsalve.com/idascorner/soap/are-your-soaps-and-shampoo-bars-ph-balanced Hope that helps! :)

This is very alkaline for the hair and scalp. all lye soaps are. She refers to a blog to justify "natural" soaps are more beneficial than evil synthetic detergents by big brand multicorporations. There is some truth to some of it but just because something is natural doesn't mean it's safe and just because an ingredient is synthetic it doesn't mean it's harmful. If you try to use a lye soap on your face you will feel tightness and dryness because it's very alkaline. Be careful what you read on blog sites. They aren't professionals in this field and they rely on spreading misinformation and fear.

When consuming it orally, yes! In this video, it's being used in a shampoo bar which is then being used on the body, not inside of it! :)

Interesting! I've always been told to use it with extreme caution out in my garden. I'll have to do more research on this. Thanks!

Do you know what every single soap you've ever bought is made with? Lye. No lye = no soap. That being said, if a soap is made right there's no lye present in the end product :)
