2 cups of all purpose flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 cup of milk, 1/2 cup water. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together, then combine the milk and the water separate then add them to the flour mixture.

THANK YOU!!!!!!! When I was WAAAAY younger than I am now, an article appeared I think in either SEVENTEEN or one of those other magazines about Navajo Tacos, complete with the recipe. My oldest sister, Anny Rhudy, copied the recipe onto a card to fit in the recipe file. She wrote that the dough should feel like "your ear lobe." teeheehee! They are so freakin' yummy!!!!! The only real difference is that she used buttermilk instead of plain milk as the acid in the buttermilk really makes the flavor of the bread POP and makes the fry bread fluffier. Don't use a fork. Use your face! They're much yummier that way. Thank you, again, Miss Hilah. Your show is so very uplifting, and I learn something new every time I watch your videos. Have a blessed and prosperous New Year.

So many rude ass comments, so what if its not how your tribe makes it. No two fry recipes breads are the same. She done a fine job making those Indian tacos. I just had to make 300 pcs of fry bread for a tribe cook out and we used powdered milk. So yes you can use milk. Or yeast or self rising flour. It's freakin fried bread. It's gonna taste the same. My mother is black and my father is full Choctaw Indian and the bread looks just about right... Believe it or not....everyone makes it different... it isn't a set recipe just as long as you have the main ingredients flour, baking powder and frying oil you can create your own version and toppings! I like to add a Little sugar and some just like it with salt. Either way It's very delicious and easy to make!🤗

Every tribe has their own way of making this dough, but it all ends up the sort of the of same way. My husband is Comanche, and I researched recipes and found the one that we like, including his grandmother who says her sisters back home have to try the best fry bread that she has had in her 70+ years on this earth, that her grandsons wife has made. And it shouldn't matter, but I'm Black. And it should be okay for other cultures to make foods that are indigenous to your people. And if their not making it the way that grandma did, don't be so mean about it when telling them this. We are all human, meaning we're not perfect, and neither are you. * Note: My husband's family calls the plain bread simply, "Fry Bread". And when the toppings are on it, it turns into a "Indian Taco". And so does every vendor at powwows. So that commenter that was offended at her calling it an Indian Taco, get over yourself!!
@drsamouk10 жыл бұрын
very well said. I said the same thing. I am Cherokee from Oklahoma. I love fry bread and all it's tribal and family variations. I am just sitting here re reading your post and thinking that you are a groovy lady and I can see why your husbands family would speak this highly of you. we are blessed with some really nice black people in our family too. we love all people. I pray that you are blessed immensely. WADO. Sallye
@daubing.ms.mea.10 жыл бұрын
Sallye Mouk thx for the comment. you are such a sweetheart. and it's funny that I'm getting this from you because it's not to often that we make fry bread, but I was at a celebration for my husband's uncle's life, and there was fry bread served for family with dinner at an Indian community type center we have in Oakland, CA. And I was telling my in-law that the bread tasted a little on the salty side, and he was telling me that that is how they are used to it!! WHAT!! So I guess I'll be adding a little more salt in my recipe, LOL! And just to throw it in there, my husband wanted our now two boys to have tribal names. So our first son's name is Dyami from the Cochiti tribe, meaning soaring eagle. And our newest one who is now 5 months, is named Hiamovi, which in Cheyenne means high chief. May you and your family be blessed as well.
@drsamouk10 жыл бұрын
Mea Wahnee My name in Cherokee is Emenah. Emenah in some tribes means AMEN. LOL. In ours it means Prayerful one who speaks to plants. Or it can also mean Angel like or Angelic/Angelica. The funny part of it is that I am an ND (Naturopathic Physician/Doctor of Natural Medicine). I don't practice much anymore because a few years ago I got sick from a mosquito bite and from that developed a lotion product to help prevent and heal that if it should happen again. That lotion also helps people with other skin conditions and it became a "hit" so, then folks started asking me if I could make products for other things and that turned into a business. It has gone so well that I don't have time to practice and do the product business full time. I got the inspiration and the "know how" from sitting in silence listening to my spirit guides/passed elders and Great Spirit. I use only pure ingredients, all plant based, such as essential oils. No chemicals at all what so ever in any part of the products. SO, I guess I am living up to my name. LOL, I pray your sons will thrive and be hugely successful and powerful, much loved men. We need them. Most of all I pray that they will always be at peace and be very happy. That is the most important thing is to be loved and happy. All my best to you. I have a facebook page Dr Sal's Essentially Natural Lotions. if you would like to look it over. Wado!!

Not only Navajo have Indian tacos but most Native Americans, I'm apache and we have em here too (az) the siouxs (sd) have them too but they use yeast.. Which taste like pizza crust to me. But we mash our pinto beans and try el pato tomato sauce (the yellow can) as a finishing sauce instead of the jalapeños it's more for flavor than heat. El pato and fry bread and beans go hand in hand in the apache world. Also if you don't use lard, use shortening but there's no problem using oil most of us are converting.. But don't use butter that's just weird, I had to mention it because I saw a comment. (Ahem) apaches didn't eat bison :p I don't think Navajos did either lol as our "cousins" in language and culture (very similar) oh, and the blue bird flour comment is absolutely accurate.. It's in ever native house hold and the native punk kids wear it as a patch on their backs as native pride and little old native ladies use the material for aprons or curtains.. Yep there's your update :p you did good! I approve lol not that you needed it with 1k worth of thumbs

Y'all are so ignorant saying she needs to be white to make an "Indian Taco"! I'm 25% native american and my family on the reservation makes them 90% the same way! The only difference is that we use sweet and condensed milk instead of whole milk. Also, you don't have to be a tan color to be native, Im as white as a sheet of paper, as you can see in my picture, but I get that from my moms side! So you can be white and native american, not saying she is, but it's possible!

I'm writing a whole chapter on this subject for my cookbook, but some quick suggestions are salt, pepper, light olive oil or canola oil (both can be used for cooking and for salad dressings/marinades). Things I always have on hand to make quick meals from are tortillas, cheese, eggs, bacon and salsa. Grab some frozen veg like corn, green beans, broccoli and you can make up some tacos for any meal! And some rice or noodles + protein + veg = stirfry!
