The maggies around my back garden are always taking the finch chicks and bullying other birds apart from one lot,the black birds,they kick the maggies asses big time.I swear their game bred,we've nick named one "BAD BILLY" because he is one kick ass bird..

It doesn't quite sound like a magpie but nice attempt. I do a chittering noise that sounds a little like them. My cats used to react to it like they do to mapies. Our second cat, we think she tried to hunt them because they harrassed her and followed her around one spring and summer (and the spring after). They were chittering very loudly even outside my window as she sat on the shed roof. She'd sit there looking chill as they lost it at her. Well what else could she do? I love European (and American) Magpies and other corvids.

This does work. I use an empty vitamin canister with more than one pellet in it, but get the same results....it calls them in. I also use a larsen trap. Sometimes i borrow a decoy bird from a friend, but you can just put a dead Magpie that has been shot from another area. They hear the shaker, then see the dead Magpie, and they can't resist trying to get to it by entering the trap.

Why would you shoot such a beautiful bird? I don't understand what offends you so much about their survival tactics. They raid nests only when necessary, they also pick woodticks off of livestock and deer. What do you think finches do to smaller creatures to feed their young? Milk them?

It works. Magpies kill so many songbirds chicks and eggs you are saving 100 birds for every magpie you take out. Larsen traps are good too.

I got nothing against magpies. They're protected in AK anyway. I have more against them than I do anyone who chooses to hunt them though. With the mix of a million different cultures here, I'm used to people hunting for their own purposes I may not understand. Whether its seal for oil, ravens for the feathers used in traditional dress, marten for the pelt, or ground squirrel for target practice. I'd be an emotional wreck if I let myself give a goddamn about every little creature someone blasted into eternity
