I’m in the military and I’ve eaten my fair share of these. MREs aren’t horrible, but when you’re in the field and have to eat them every day, they get old after a while.

Ive liked most MRE's that ive had. Troops would trade pound cake over a veggie patty, the gum if swallowed acts as a laxative. And sometimes the hydrogen water heating packs are hot or miss. Other than that we trade with somone else for something better. Or we just shut up and eat em. Only diet your gonna get so you better enjoy. Could be your last meal out on deployment.

Be glad you didn't get cheese spread. That stuff binds you up forever. There are enough calories in one MRE to sustain you for at least a day. Lots of trading of food happens in the field with the different meals.

Much better to buy some canned food. Then buy a vacuum seal machine, some rice, some flour, some spaghetti, some spice, packaged dried soup base, fried fruits, dried meat, .. and some vitamin pills. You can store everything for 5 years. Each meal will cost you like 4 bucks at the most. LOL

I'm not sure if this meal is just much newer than the ones I got in 2012, or if it's repackaged, but, this meal appears to be missing many components. The pears should have been in their own box, you're missing your coffee, sugar, and creamer. You're missing your matches, a hot beverage bag for the coffee, and you should have gotten a ridiculously heavy duty dark earth colored mre spoon. At least this was generally what I got in my meals. My favorite was chili, with my close second favorite being cheese tortellini.

Actual MRE's aren't all terrible. Wasn't a fan of the slab of ham in brine, shit was disgusting. Like a chunky piece of wet rubber drenched in salt. Though never remember actual MRE's opening that easily, the main pouch was a bitch. Made worse in basic because they wouldn't let us have anything sharp. Had to make do with teeth, rocks or something to tear through. Not sure how all that went down with the heater and sleeve, maybe these work different. We slipped the foil food pack into the heater bag, added water, folded it over and let it warm that way. Offered enough heat to warm the main course and one of the sides back to back one at a time and didn't open the foil food pouch until after it was removed from the water/heat pack.

We had to eat those in a hurricane shelter. It was so gross. It had like dehydrated lasagna, dried cranberries were pretty good tho but the water heating pack was so cool to use. There was more but I can't remember. All I know is most of it was disgusting.

I'm a Marine Corps vet and honestly, I love the genuine MREs. It's all dehydrated though so we added water and used the chemical heater to eat them when we had enough time to do so. I preferred the turkey breast MRE.

Unless you were eating RCWs or LRPs almost no MRE components require water for preparation. The only components that require them are drink mixes.

@@BWIENS789 You may be too young but the original MREs had dehydrated pork patties and mixed fruit. We used to just eat them dry since re-hydrating them didn't really make them any better. Those didn't have the heaters and we used heat tabs under a canteen cup.

Navy here, since when did MRE's have skittles??? I know if I had to take an MRE out and I found some skittles in there, part of my humanity would be restored. The best thing I remember in an MRE was the blackberry cobbler-- and even then the breading tasted kinda like it was in a can and full of preservatives... not the greatest but hey, it still went down better than some of the other stuff.
