This week on Building a Goat Island Skiff, a homemade sailing boat
WE'RE SAILING!!!
Finally completed my sailing boat build!
I would like to thank you all for the support and advice left on the comment section. A very special thanks to everyone on the Goat Island skiff FB group for sharing so many tips and great advice too.
An AWESOME journey, 601 hours building the boat, 300+ editing videos, and many more reading posts and suggestions from you lot.
You guys kept me going and focused so that week after week I could show you some progress!
THANK YOU!!
this week's tasks:
*Fitted bow trim
*Sorted out the rigging
*Finished the beach trolley
*Completed the inspection successfully
*First sail
Total of 23 hours work this week.
This is my first plywood boat building so this is NOT a tutorial on how to build the GIS, it's just how I built my homemade plywood sailing boat...my way. Will it work? Sure hope so!

Fantastic Teo. I’m really pleased for you. Was it ever going to fail the inspection?....of course not. But your obvious nervousness beforehand was a great indicator of how much you’ve cared about the quality of Forager. ... and then complete joy when it picks up on the wind. looks like it wants to fly!? Delightful. I’ve enjoyed every minute. I hope that’s not the end because I’m looking forward to seeing oars, how you might tweak rigging after using her for a while, how you think it performs. It’s been a complete treat, thanks. I’ll be raising a virtual beer to you.

watching all your skiff videos - i never understood why small boats went for the bermuda sails. lug seems so much reasonable (simple & easy to make and maintain), especially the lack of stays etc.

@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark! You are right I was a bit uncomfortable as this was my first time ever sailing the GIS and right with 20 knot gusts!! 😅 Now that I've sailed her for a full season I found out that I should hike mostly close to the mid seat so the tiller extension is just the right size! There isn't any advantage to position myself further aft on the GIS, even when running I don't have to come much further back than maybe a feet or two from the mid seat.

I loved this series, you're a nice and gentle guy and watching your videos was very intresting and relaxing, plus i also had a good laugh from time to time. The boat seems to perform well and by the smile on your face she does! i'm just curious on why did you chose to paint it black and not some lighter color! Thanks for these nice boat building videos!
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! 😊 The boat performs very well indeed and I've had an amazing first season sailing her!! I chose black color because I like the contrast with the varnish. In hindsight, with all the high temps here in Portugal maybe white would be the better choice...🤔

You need a ladder to climb in and out of 50CM? Are they expecting miniature sailors?
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 3 жыл бұрын
If you have a look at the capsize video I made you will see that after a few capsize tests, the second time I try to climb aboard by the transom I struggled a bit because I was already getting tired, and that was with the boat swamped and a lot less than 51cm! Now imagine it's a heavier person who falls overboard, how do you get that person back onboard? 😉
