nicest homemade mill I've seen and even nicer than a lot of the entry level hobbyist or Farmers Mills I've been looking at.

Nice cuts of Ash and nice kiln. Still some work to be done on my sawmill. Just finished with the saw portion of my mill. Fabricated and installed guide brackets for the 1 1/4" bandsaw blade, made greaseable abhors for the roller guides and installed them. That's pretty much it for the saw, except I plan on installing an alternator to charge the battery, run the winch and lights, need to do all the wiring for the engine starter, winch to lift and lower the saw, alternator and lights. Then on to the rail bed, have all the parts cut, just need to weld it all together, sandblast and paint the saw and rail bed, adjust it all, then first cuts. I have an 18 HP engine and made calculations for the blade speed, it's going to work just fine. Thanks for posting your vid, awesome work you have done, Jeff.

keep up the work. you will have to put a video when you get it powered up

That seems to cut very quick. Yours is one of the better homebuilt mills I've seen on YT. Nice job!
@whistle3man8 жыл бұрын
thanks. its cut a lot of wood. I have an automatic saw sharpener just about finished. I'll put a video up when it YT ready

I appreciate the work you have done as I cast the aluminum and use my home made lathe etc. Your mill and setup is is very much like mine. Excellent dance, and I am sure you do right by others as well.

thanks ed. glad to hear there is sombody else out there doing some serious faricating. put up a video when your ready i would love to see your setup

You would not be impressed with my mill as I am not interested impressing anyone. My mill cost a whole $200. and it is built from recycled materials. However I have cut several thousand BF of lumber out of trees as big as 36" in diameter any length I choose, it is all under a roof and easy access to get materials in and out. I can drop logs on the bed all day long and not hurt it. But it aint pretty it just works well. I have a heavy overhead beam that I work off of with chain and come along to turn the largest of logs as well. Right now I am in the last stages of converting one of the first skid-steer into hydro static drive. Along with butchering a dozen head of stock and on and on . Taking on making a video just probably won't happen. i do however appreciate your work . Thanks for the upload.

sounds to me like you and i may be cut from similar cloth. sound to me you got a heck of a setup. keep up the good work

Thanks whistle3man, I do plan on uploading a video when first cuts are made. I have progressively taken videos as I have been building the sawmill, so hopefully it will help someone else take the plunge in building one, it has been fun
@blairwise33398 жыл бұрын
going to try to watch some of your other videos and figure out how to build one hopefully nearly as nice

I have a video of the saw mill features that will give you some ideas
@blairwise33398 жыл бұрын
+whistle3man I watched it thank you. I had watched it the other day and I will probably watch it another dozen times while looking at other plans and trying to get ideas together but you're sure seems to be the slickest I've seen. I hate to ask how much for a set of those aluminum wheels. LOL.
@whistle3man8 жыл бұрын
+Blair Wise those wheels I made them custom. I'm sure if you had to pay the 180 per hour for the machining it would add up fast
@blairwise33398 жыл бұрын
+whistle3man I know you made them custom that's why I was making a joke saying I'd hate to ask what a set of those would cost me. LOL. But I'm sure they're much better than the heavy cast-iron ones.
@whistle3man8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. They were fun to design and machine. The curved spokes are a throwback to the old machinery.

Nice job, I got a 14 twin Briggs and can’t get it to cut that fast. What size wheels you have and pulley ratios? Maybe Iam don’t have the right ratios to give me speed/ power. Thanks
@whistle3man6 жыл бұрын
revid64 the wheels are 20 inch diameter. I can't remember the speed of the band right off the top of my head. I'm sure it's at least 1000 feet per minute. Next time I'm running it I'll check for you.

I had a woodmiser with 9hp one cylinder b&s motor , it would cut 16 at full speed ( electric drive ) so set up right your fourteen hp should be awesome . Make sure you have enough set in the teeth so sawdust clears without heating the blade, and the blade has to be 100% true to the tracks . Goodluck,have fun

Do you peel all your logs first?

kevin lawrence i will peel ash because it is very easy. i have a chainsaw carver attachment for a 4 inch grinder that i use also

Iam using 20” tires, do you think that makes a different in speed in relation to using steel band wheels? What about pulley sizes on motor and band wheels?
@whistle3man6 жыл бұрын
revid64 I'll be at the mill today and I'll measure the pulleys. If I remember I'll take the tachometer and check it at the wheels. I don't think the type of wheel makes a difference. 20 inch is 20 inch
@whistle3man6 жыл бұрын
revid64 my wheels turn at 950 RPM that works out to almost 5000 surface feet. I run bi metal blades from Lenox. I just cut up a 30 inch diameter by 15 foot log of hemlock. Got some great 1 3/4 thick 17 inch wide boards.
@revid646 жыл бұрын
Bi metal ? Got a link to the blade you use? I might give it a try. Iam only sawing balsam fur and spruce. Biggest is probably 24” at butt . I think I gauges my wheels at aprox 4200-4600 . That’s what woodmizer rated their blades at.

OK. Still using one belt.. GOOD enough I guess. Watched the 2014 video
@whistle3man8 жыл бұрын
I did design it for 2 belts and ran it with 2 for a while. the newer belts they make that are made with high end fibers like kevlar and such work very well. I have been running that same belt for about 2 years and it has a bad spot in it from when I had a blade brake and jam. 1 high end belt will work

I have hundreds of Ash that died massive virgin wood
@whistle3man2 жыл бұрын
I cut a lot of ash. It's nice wood to work with in the wood shop. It looks good stained. Most of the ash here is now nearly to far gone. Many have blown down. Emerald ash borer. Another thing we got from overseas.
