The COFFIN EXPLAINED, as much as it can be explained. We bought and were fixing up the little house next to us, where Dixie and MarDe stayed, to rent to my son's friend. He acquired the coffin, which had only been used for Halloween, but stored it in the house so that he could sleep in his hearse at music festivals.

I was recently out solo camping, and I noticed a large bug crawling on my water cooler. I got up close and said, “Hey Mr. Bug. What are you up to?” in my best southern accent. I felt your critter-lovin’ spirit at that moment. Haha In all seriousness, I was a tad nervous as I was the only person in the primitive campground that night. I just thought, ‘If Dixie can pop a tent in the middle of the woods by herself, I can definitely survive this cozy camper just fine.’ Thanks for being a lovely example of trusting & respecting nature - especially as a solo female.

Wow! I must say this episode was epic! Incredible things happened on this segment. I literally got goose bumps listening to the story of the county that extended unusual hospitality to you, then the couple that took you into their home. And the story of you meeting up with the biker at your 500 mile marker just when you needed a little lift in your spirit. Remarkable happenings! I think the county should hire you to be the face to promote the Florida Trail.🙂

Dixie, when the borders open you need to come to Vancouver Island (off the coast of BC, Canada) and hike the three big trails here, juan de fuca, north coast, and west coast trail. I discovered a piece of the trail magic "magic" when I moved to Hoboken NJ (of all places). Like most Americans, I had always lived mostly car-dependent but when I move to Hoboken, I no longer had a car to get around. So I learned life on foot and it is really one of the most transformative shifts, truly epochal, in my life. The pace, the way you observe and interact with other people and your surroundings, instead of flashing past inside a solid box, can connect you to the world you live in in such a more intimate and sympathetic way. You deal with other people in ways that you wouldn't have the chance to if you are driving everywhere, chance encounters that can add so much richness to your day .I think you see that really powerfully in the hiker community because it's a concentration of this human-scaled walking-paced culture and then the communities or "trail towns" start experiencing the ripple effects whether or not they realize the reason behind it. It's going to be hard to leave this area for me because I will miss that way of life, which doesn't really exist in other part of the US to this degree. But I would truly love to see more places in the US and people get to know "walking magic" and reshape communities as a result, because it really changes your world.

I'm so happy you two are showing the world the Florida trail! I have lived in Florida a long time and it is a very unique place. So many different ecosystems! That is some amazing nature! Last week I did a section of a trail here in the Netherlands and experienced some trail magic for the first time. I was trying to pitch my tent in very stormy and rainy weather, when an older guy came to me and invited me for coffee in his caravan. Turned out he and his wife used to go bike packing when they were young. They helped me pitch my tent just behind their caravan, out of the wind and invited me for dinner. People are so nice and generous! Usually it's very hard for me to except help, but I heard your voice in my head: You just don't turn down trail magic!

The biker at mile 500 must have been following the early highway called the Old Spanish Trail. Most of it later became US 80, US 290, and US 90. The PCT crosses it at Boulder Oaks CG, and the CDT crosses it in Lordsburg. It went though San Diego, Phoenix, Tucson, Deming, El Paso, San Antonio, Houston, New Orleans, Mobile, Tallahassee, Jackson, and St. Augustine. The old road through eastern Florida was the "Dixie Highway."

Hey Dixie, when I'm in a funk I remind myself that I'll feel better soon. When I'm zippity doo da happy, I remind myself that it won't last forever. Keeps me grounded.

Great as always! I hope your adventure really jump starts the hiker community along the FT! I hope people seeing this see this as an opportunity to get in on the ground level and help build things like hostiles, shelters, hiker re-supply shops etc along the trail. Having knowledgeable drivers like Ron Brown who helps AT hikers, would be amazing in Florida! Anyway, thank you for what you are doing, and fingers crossed 🤞

Smiley-face spider, turnin' that frown upside down at 30:16 . Kinda the theme of this episode.
