If you own a WJ a friendly piece of advice, I learned the hard way, any time you have the AC unit out of the car, they have to remove the complete dash, labor wise it is expensive, change all of your actuators, heater core etc. As they will go out shortly down the road and then you have to pay the labor, which as some dealer can run as high as $2000.oo. Also get the aftermarket metal door kit...just trying to help.

Sorry do not understand what this has to do with the clip? And I have NEVER paid a mechanic I do everything myself. I started working on cars at the age of 12 out of necessity as we lived on a farm far from any town. As for the heater I now have no heater or hoses running too it we are lucky enough here not to really need a heater and the heated seats are enough for us in winter.

Those arent HO heads. It has a ledge above the intake valve in the combustion chamber. HO heads dont have that and its more round. I put a standard V8 head in my jeep, but grinding that ledge down and polished it. Same thing really. It worked.

Nice vid. I love the idea with the air filter. Where did you run the oil breather? Is that a Dodge 4.7 manifold?

Just subbed, this video gave me the kick up the butt to do more on my Jeep, i have a 4.7 V8 WJ 2002, i really want to improve the BHP, my Jeep is very low miles approx 57k and runs great but i really want to look after it and improve where i can. Im going to go through your vids and see what i can also do, im liking the look of the bosch fuel injectors for a relatively easy first mod. Also just wondering what your advice would be on the best spark plugs? Im currently running bosch 4's but im not feeling the gains i have had with these plugs on other cars.
@BuiltByRik9 жыл бұрын
+Chris Mason I have the HO recommended NGK Platinum spark plugs PFR7B . Quite pricey but apparently the best. I played AU$ 195 for a set of 8 but they last a very long time. I use NGK as they have never failed on me unlike other brands.

Hey boss, just wanted to drop a line from the fun seat of my Dub J to let you know you've got a great truck on your hands. Do you know roughly what numbers you're putting down?
@BuiltByRik9 жыл бұрын
+andrew mangen Hi Andrew glad you like my monster :-) I am guessing with numbers you are asking power? I am estimating just under 400 HP at the flywheel and over that when I install the HO camshafts. I may delay putting them in as I found somebody who can grind them so they have a bit more power. I'll have to save up first as it won't be cheap. I am only on a pension and need to save up for upgrades. I have also started manufacturing a custom single plane intake manifold for it. I am just estimating the power output though. I am comparing the power to other projects I build earlier on in my life. Going in for a spinal operation Friday so won't be able to do much to him for a while. Regards Rik
@alpha2gproject7839 жыл бұрын
That's not a bad idea. I was talking with Compcams a few months ago and they were giving an estimate of about 800 to 1200 for reground cams. I'm just going with the HO for now and hopefully later this winter I'll pull the heads and do a good port job. How's the transmission hold up? Any issues towing? I've always been under the impression the transmissions were pretty weak and sloppy and wonder if you have any slipping issues.
@BuiltByRik9 жыл бұрын
+andrew mangen never had any transmission problems. I fitted a line pressure building resistor from Airram which was a big improvement and not long ago fitted a Transgo shift kit. But I never heard of it being a weak box before? I brought some second-hand HO camshafts from Canada for $300 and a company here will grind them for $500 to what I want. About $250 for him to make profiles and another $250 to grind both camshafts. I may wait and save up and have that done before installing them.

What is the maximum lift allowed in Australia? I like the height of 3 inches; which company did you order the springs from?

The springs were on it when I purchased it and maximum lift in Western Australia is 2 inch including higher tire profile. I'm at 3 inch over factory now. But the cops are not to had here and will only pick on you if it looks dangerously high or unsafe.

Would you ever recommend doing these types of upgrades to the straight 6 cyl.??
@BuiltByRik10 жыл бұрын
Depends on what model 6? But in general these upgrades are applicable to most engines. Is your inline 6 fuelinjected? If yes you could upgrade the fuelinjectors but I would imagine different injectors to the V8. Porting the head and matching manifolds is great for any engine. Solid lifters may not be possible unless you change over to a roller cam if available for your model. The V8 is standard with overhead roller camshafts. High Performance pistons is also possible bur requires a full rebuild. High flow exhausts are a must for any revhead for improvement and is an easy upgrade. If money is no object the sky is the limit. Regards Rik
@Darius543710 жыл бұрын
Yes my engine is fuel injected, is there a brand name that would stand out more than the rest of them out there, say like the top three brand names for the injectors??
@BuiltByRik10 жыл бұрын
Nippon and Bosch are 2 that come to mind straight away. Do the recearch and see if you can find some 12 hole injectors with the same pressure and volume as the origi0nal injectors. You could even go for a bit higher volume the pcm still works out the best mix. Example my injectors are EV6 injectors at 28b lb that is where you start searching. I dont think yours has EV6 though. Regards Rik. PS there are also of the shelf performance injectors for most applications.

Love this video watched it multiple times before but I'm wondering how much all of this Costed and what the time frames were? Just got my first vehicle "a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited 4.7L" for 900$ so it's not the healthiest. Haha I'm looking to prove my big bro wrong when he says grand cherokees aren't "real" jeeps and I wasted my money and should just scrap mine. Wanna start making it healthier bits at a time and improving upon reliability. Also do you have links to the parts you used and put on?
@BuiltByRik9 жыл бұрын
keegan vanosdol $900 is a great deal and a great base to work on. I have quite a few clips on my KZbin channel Home Mechanics. Most my engine parts came from Airram Performance they specialize in the 4.7. Not a real 4x4 huh hmmm I have owned most brands of 4x4 and this is by far the best I owned. I gew up working deep in the West Australian forrests where a good 4x4 was very important and this WJ would kick their arses. Especialy since mine has Quadra Drive ll. Rebuilding the engine for more grunt helps also. Fix it up and kick his butt. Just check KZbin on how well they go. With my clips are some links to where to get stuff but if there is anything in particular just ask. I have pictures on my Google+ as well. Just subscribe here and add me on Google+ I purchased it with a blown engine and partly striped but still registered for $2200 but it has every option available so I feel still a good buy. Took me 3 months to get it up and running after I brought it and will keep fixing and upgrading it as I enjoy doing it. It was a project to sell for profit but while working on it realized it was such a good vehicle I started spending more money and could not part with it. Not sure how much I spent on it now but must be around $10,000. Fitting a transmission cooling system next. Clip will come up in a week or 2. Regards Rik

How much more power do you think it gained?
@BuiltByRik10 жыл бұрын
Well if I added up every power gain that was advertised with the products I would be over 400hp but I am a bit more realistic than that. My geuss driving it with all the upgrades inc HO pistons, power wire, solid lash, shaved heads 11:1 compression, porting & polishing, performance valve springs, removed clutch fan, 3" high flow system I think close to 400hp but if I get my hands on some HO or Performance camshafts it may push it on or over 400hp. Waiting for a shift kit then after maybe see if I can find a constant 4x4 dyno. Will know for sure than. It goes quite well need to be carefull if taking of and turning. Still gets my heart racing at times :-)
@muhammadayyad93216 жыл бұрын
This is still very nice. Do you mind telling me, why aftermarket lifters and springs? That doesnt effect power. However i do like the intake manifold and cold air intake you added. Mind telling me which kind they are? Also how much HP are you running? Im not going to touch my lifters or springs. Its too late for that now. I just put my engine back in last week. But im going for a k&n air intake for 400$ that put 22hp more on the dyno, a throttle body spacer, and a catback exhaust for more backpressure. Also going for a snorkel, and all ive done so far is a port and polish and sleeved one cylinder cuz it cracked. Still looking for more power tho. I want to get it to 350hp.
@BuiltByRik6 жыл бұрын
You dyno your engine and dont think solid lifters and performance valve springs increase power? But you think a air cleaner will give you 20 more HP? You have a lot to learn sorry to say, Solid lifters allow for more accurate valve operation especially at high RPM, They open the valve faster and stay open longer not relying on oil pressure, I have since done lots more upgrades including custom High Performance camshafts, Bigger throttle body etc, You cannot run my camshafts without solid lifters, I estimate my HP around 400 now, I have a Overland HO WJ and it is no match for this Jeep, Compared to the HO this Jeep is like a race car and the HO a daily shopping cart,
@BuiltByRik6 жыл бұрын
Dont believe the back pressure BS if that was true why do drag cars have straight out pipes? if exhaust systems gave more power all race cars would be quiet LOL. In fact there are dyno sesions on KZbin that disprove that fact and a open exhaust system gets the most power. www.hotrod.com/articles/engine-masters-ep-9-busts-the-backpressure-myth-3-vs-2-5-inch-exhaust/

LET YOUR ENGINE BREATHE
@muhammadayyad93216 жыл бұрын
Home Mechanics Man Cave i personally havent dynod my jeep, but i saw a forum where a guy put a dynomax ultra flow exhaust and a cold air intake, with a superchip, and got 30hp. But the way i see lifters and springs, it may be better qaulity so they can withstand high RPMs, but they dont keep the valves open longer. The HO cams alone will do that. They wont open the valve faster, theyll bring it back up quicker once the camlobe lets off of the rocker. But im not here to argue, im just trying to get the most out of my jeep. Im an engine specialist, but im not too fond of high preformance. Ill admit that. I think im going to go for a 70mm throttlebody, and a shorter intake manifold. I bought a throttlebody spacer, but i feel like i wont get much out of it to be honest. In 3 or 4 years once ive saved up enough money im gonna put twin turbos in it.
@BuiltByRik6 жыл бұрын
Study mechanics more before you comment my friend and tell somebody like me that has build engines for 40 years he is wrong? Hydraulic lifters are pumped up with oil pressure as engines rev up oil pressure drops and the lifter does and cannot keep the valve open as long and takes longer to open it. It is a small amount but over 1000's of rpm it does make a difference. Hydraulic lifters are used because they are more quiet and require let maintenance but you lose some power using them. Why else would race engines use solid lifters? Please study before you comment. Since you dont know as much as you think you do ill just leave your comments alone. You ask me questions then tell me I am wrong? wow

Hello Dear, Just thinking about to get a 1999 WJ used with 320.000Km. Looking around, I found you(I subscribed) but got worried when I see overheating and blow engine....uffff ! Scary. Would you be so kind tell what can make the engine blow...and do you think 320.000 Kilometers is to much for motor and (or) transmission? The WJ been used only in summer to tow a huge power boat !? It looks Spotless (Money People that used it in summer for the boa and winter inside garage). Best Regards. I will check all your videos. Merry Christmas for you an Family.
@BuiltByRik7 жыл бұрын
320k is normally toward the end of its life but if looked after serviced well it may go another 100k. This engine needs regular service and no matter how old use the correct oil. If you use thicker oil you will damage the bottom end. I would buy it but then again if it broke I can fix it. Its a V8 but a high performance design so it needs to be treated as one. Unlike older style engine's that can handle more neglect. All engines have good and bad points. I really like this engine. Just treat it right. Thanks for subscribing.

whats the cheapest best way to give more HP to a 4.7 ho 2004 ?
@BuiltByRik8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Feddy Well one thing I have learned is HP is never cheap. You are lucky to start with a HO the better engine I was not that lucky. There is no cheap way. The easiest way is bolt on performance. Exhaust improvements, a 2008 intake manifold, larger throttle body, super chip or ecu upgrades. Then there is the super charger a nice option but $$$$. Turbo is next then the most expensive is starting all over from the begining. Rebuilding it for performance. There is no cheap way sorry. The cheapest is a high flow exhaust a minimum $500+

How much horsepower and torque are you getting over the stock specs
@BuiltByRik7 жыл бұрын
I estimate about 80. But until the project is finished it's unknown. I'm around 400HP from experience having build engines most my life. I still need to install the 800HP fuel system I already have and injectors. All I need is a stand alone engine management system. My stock engine management system cannot cope. It does 0 to 100kph in under 6 second. Not bad for a SUV.
