Homeowner digs up garden to rescue trapped hedgehog

Sometimes, rescue calls are a lot harder than we first expected them to be. We were recently called to a local garden where a hedgehog had fallen down a hole and couldn't get out. Little did we know how stuck he was!
After falling into the hole, the confused hedgehog had tried to tunnel his way out, but quickly hit the buildings foundations. With his spines stopping him from going backwards there was no way out.
Simon had to chisel his way through the paving above to release the hedgehog from his muddy prison. Luckily, though, he was not injured and could be released straight back to the wild :)

I found a small hedgehog last september... cutest thing. I've fed it snails and worms and whatever, it loved it. Wasn't scared at all. At some point it fell asleep in my hand as we called the wildlife aid here in the Netherlands... sad to see it go, fell in love with it, feisty little things they are. Oh well, more chance to survive with wildlife aid, and probably a better home too.

I'm confused on this one about your digging choice. It looked like the bottom of the hole was primarily sand. So it should have been easier to dig out from under more than removing the pavers.

@Silverphox13
@Silverphox13 2 жыл бұрын
@@tsm688 Yeah, looking at it again after all this time. It still looks like it would have been better to dig a little bit from right around the hedgehog, especially below. It doesn't look like the stone above would come loose. It also looked like hammering the stone down to dislodge it might have been impacting the hedgehog.

Brian, a fun memory: one early summer morning I was walking on a small country road, when I saw a hedgehog approaching, walking in my direction on the same road. It hadn't noticed me. I stood absolutely still and waited when it would finally see or smell me. It never did. It just walked in all peace right towards me, passed me by few inches, and continued its stroll with no worry in the world. Perhaps it was blind, but it didn't seem troubled in any way. I remember wondering how long its legs were. Usually when you see a hedgie, it's crouching, so it looks like a ball of spikes with a pointy nose.
