Rented Dirt Perfects Caterpillar D4G to start building the road for the you tube yacht project. Step one was to clear and clean up from some of the fires we had during the initial clearing project. It was a little muddy on top, but was still able to get a lot cleaned up and a small start on a section of the road

I was an Air Force Vehicle Mechanic for 20 years (retired in 2016) and the company that makes those portable 12/24 Volt jump packs are awesome! We also had their heavy duty roll around packs that even had the M-Series slave cable receptacles! Our mobile maintenance trucks their generator/jump start unit with ALL of the different types of connections and cables for just about any application you could imagine! Their products are tough and last a long time.

If you don't struggle you haven't tried. Everyone struggles from time to time. I have even seen NASA engineers struggle. Only because we all try to push ourselves to achieve more and more. Everyone will struggle when you move outside your comfort zone. That's how we grow in our learning and achieve great things. God bless

There is nothing like a Cat. I was a Catskinner in college. Operated a 977H Traxcavator. That baby started every time but one. We left it on site and some kids vandalized the battery cables. Our dealer was there within a half-hour of my boss calling him, and half an hour later she was good as new. I also operated a Cat Model 12 grader. Great machine. Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it quicker than you think. Meanwhile, learning is so much fun.

I hope the extra dirt around the base of some of those trees does not kill them. I have seen that happen. A 4" fire hose just might remove the dirt from around the base of the trees. Fun video.

Jerry will be proud! You ended up with a tolerable good result without breaking anything. My grandfather had a D9. It was post WW2... you know like 1946. It used cables to lift and angle the blade. He lived in Princeton IN. As a teen, I had the privilege of playing on it for a weekend. He had a 40 acre corn field that he was terracing. It had been cleared years ago except for 2 huge pecan trees that he wanted to save. You see, when you are backing a D9 in the middle of a 40 acre corn field you don’t worry too much about looking backward... had he seen fit to put a rear view mirror on it... he might still have two Pecan trees in that field. But, the one that was left stands proudly beside the office of a trailer park now... and a little bit of the wood from the other is in a hope chest he made for my sister. So, by my book.. you did just fine in your maiden voyage.

Captain Kleeman a little bit... he was actually much better with metal... he was a Tool & Die maker for Westinghouse. I have all of his measuring tools... slide rules (ancient calculators... one step above an abacus), and etc. I learned woodworking when I was a Quality Engineer for a huge Furniture manufacturer. Good try though.

If I can offer a little tip, tilt the blade back from bottom to top so heavier items are pushed forward and lighter are pushed aside, also turn the blade either left or right depending on where you need the material to end up. Also the blade does not have to be used for digging if what you want to move is above ground. Yes putting the blade at an angle means more work but it also lets the soil fall away from the logs and limbs so it takes less effort and time. I in would have dropped a culvert in that ditch for rain run off and snow melt because blocking a drainage point is a bad idea even the desert.

@@CaptainKleeman Go for it. Lay dirt out thick then take cuts about a foot deep. If wet and sticky angle blade and winrow it out,, keep working big wood rocks and stumps off edge of lift. Don't worry about dirt or grade just thin out the junk. When your ready take the first cut down the middle of lift a one ft cut works good at leaving dirt and keeping enough dirt to roll out any large wood ahead of push or it'll roll out one side or the other.Rule of thumb max push for efficiency and grade level is 150 feet but works out slightly more. We work three stations at a time on road jobs stakes 50 ft apart. Take the high side of lift first, I said above to take middle to start, if lift lands fairly equal depth is when I'd take middle then left side or right. If you track onto large rock along cut back up and corner it up out carry on to bladeful you left push to end. If theres a hole dont worry it'll fill next pass or so.At end of second push half track your imprint back to start 2nd gear let out off decelerater the dozer will speed up and develop what we call a thunder speed up as it comes into it to where your comfortable. Check tach if you have one or train ear to rpm tone for reverse. Creates an equel pack pattern, the tighter the pack the better the 2nd cut goes. Now it becomes more enjoyable seeing lift coming into it. You won't break anything so don't worry about that. I carried on as usual, not trying to tell you what to do. I grew up excavating been at it 30 yrs or so.pretty much done now due too severe spine injury. Two things you DO on a dozer is wear seat belt and hearing and eye protection with open cab. Always belted enclosed cab ear and eye is still good idea. As confidence builds your speed will pick up, beware of covered stumps still rooted stop you dead in your tracks. Without belt you're going overboard after you meet dash and grab handle on top comes air cleaner and muffler. What you DON'T do with a dozer is push against trees to knock them over. The whiplash affect can snap the top off or just a limb but plan on it landing on you. There is a method to it but chain saws better choice. Large rock tilt corner ease into cut and push when you feel dozer pressure against rock throttle up and lift on blade. Keep dirt betwwen blade face and rock. If no movement back off easy and tilt cut around it pick a different push point. No move put hoe on it.Sorry so lengthy. Can't tell.i miss working! You're a natural by the looks of things doing great. Like you said common sense and seat time. On reverse speed if your reach loud /hard track pad slap slow down a tad. Have fun, I'll be checking out vids.

you did a good enough job given limited experience mate. Nobody but nobody becomes a professional on their first or second go it takes hours and hours of use repeating and finessing before you get really good. Only tip i would suggest is when you are pushing the material along? as you move forward slowly keep bringing up your blade, that way you will find that the larger material in this case tree limbs stumps etc, will keep on being pushed whilst the soil leaf mulch will bit by bit drop out and be left behind. It will come with practice that is 100% guaranteed

You're doing ok. Its not easy between trees. When you first cut into pile load blade right up and extend push longer working blade up little at a time letting dirt drop out but carry larger wood stumps and rocks further on. Then back up and make another cut working larger material out again. Leaving cleaner dirt behind. It's a bitch when wet also due to material not breaking up. It takes time an patience.

You’re such a rookie Captain. You should know.....well......stuff that I can’t mention for reasons.........basically because the only seat time I have on a dozer was before I was 10 and had to be lifted up onto the tracks. I am however still qualified to comment because I made about a million miles of roads with my Mighty Tonka machines. By the way. I was glad you brought out the skycam for this. I was afraid the drone would get all the action since it’s the kool new kid in school.

Wayne Crews the drone is cool and all, but how could I give up on a ladder can that had been so good to me?

Hey Bro, not too bad for having virtually no experience. Looks like all you need is some seat time and you will be a Dirt Perfect Jr in no time! LOL. A word of advice, easiest way to learn to cut a grade, always keep a blade full of dirt when pushing. Scraping around is ok to learn controls and actions of the machine, but true dirt work is a lot simpler if you have a full blade of dirt. That doesn't mean you have to be able to see it over the top of the blade, just around both of the sides. Watch Mike's mentor Jerry sometime, you can learn a lot from that man.

A little constructive criticism. You may be changing the angle of the blade way more than you need to. Also always make sure you're always at full throttle when pushing. Otherwise, nice job!

Wish I could rent a dozer for. My little 2.69 acres, but I bet you have to actually need to know how to operate one. I wonder if that’s true for mini excavators and skid steers? Good job on moving the dirt!
