The big question is how many tons of timber have you excavated from the 4 acres? I'm asking including the low grade bushy sticky trees. Those are worth $20+ a ton to the right mill that makes pressboard ect or to the bioenergy plants depending on the state you're in. I wonder if the timber if sold would actually have paid the equipment costs to clear the land.

So I have a question as a complete noob at land development. What would you use to clear and level a wooded hillside property with large rocks and boulders?
@berniemac8413
@berniemac8413 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you might need a hydraulic hammer attachment to break down the rocks.. they have some attachments for mini excavators and also for skid steers.. also, an excavator with a thumb would help picking up any logs you may have..

I'm clearing an overgrown fence line, mostly saplings, vines, and brush. Due to budget, I have to decide between either a skid steer/track loader, or an excavator. Which is the most productive, bang for the buck to make best use of time and capabilities?

Did you ever explain how to make the driveway? Why do you have to dig it out? How much do you have to dig out? What size gravel and how thick is the layer of gravel? Same question for the place you want to out your house. Thanks.
@MrPostFrame
@MrPostFrame 3 жыл бұрын
I put 3” clean rock down as a base and then I will put 3”s of 3/4” gravel down. It varies on your house location but with a slab you want at least 4”s of rock under your slab.

Problem with renting specialized equipment - takes a while to become proficient in using the equipment if one has not used it before. This is true for most DIY users. Therefore there is a substantial learning curve. This time/cost has to be taken into account when coming out with real numbers for rent vs. owning the equipment.

Is it a good idea to rent out the equipment like a bobcat and excavator to do jobs until saving up enough or is that counter productive ? And better off just buying the equipment first? I want to start a business here in central fl but stuck on how I should start. And can you make a video on quoting as well?
@MrPostFrame
@MrPostFrame 2 жыл бұрын
Just depends on what your budget is. Having a monthly payment might make more sense for some things. Skid steer seems to be a good thing to permanently have around so getting into a lease or buying one makes a lot of sense for us. Good idea on the quote video!

This is a good plan for cost containment if the land owner does not have to pay for truck loading, truck hauling and dumping costs of the debris. If the land owner has to pay for load, haul and dump then the costs sky rocket. Charge for a dump truck haul, dump truck unload at an approved site plus a track loader or big hoe to pick up the brush and dump into the tandem truck is easily $1,800 to $2,000 each day in my area. How do I know this? Because I am clearing now and this was the best price I found after three bids. Some counties will allow dig, bury and cover brush on the land owner's property. Always ask....
@MrPostFrame
@MrPostFrame 2 жыл бұрын
That definitely would increase the expense! Thankfully in a lot of rural areas you aren't required to haul things away.

$225 a day to rent one of those... NO WAY! It cost $400 per day to rent a small 25hp Kubota tractor at Home Depot. I think you are way undershooting rental cost.
@MrPostFrame

That is what it cost me. Where are you located? An actual rental company is going to be cheaper than Home Depot most of the time especially on larger equipment.

I just paid $1030 for a small excavator. Had it for 7 days. So couldve put 54hrs on it. Put about 45 on it tho. 2 weeks ago,skid steer was roughly $240 a day. Go to a rental company. Not home depot!

Definitely don't rent from the big box stores. Look for the equipment rental stores especially near rural towns.

You did not do a 500' driveway in 4 hours. Remember you own your machine and have experience using it. There is a learning curve on this equipment. A professional is not doing much more than an acre a day with much better equipment than you used. Your time and cost on this project are not accurate. Yes your premise that you can save money by renting and doing it yourself if you don't include your time involved. Add the cost of your time and it most likely costs you more.

People don't realize just how quick an inexperienced operator can get into trouble with one of these machines... It's not like driving a car or riding a lawnmower. Oh, and you're right... a 500' driveway in 4 hours?? I don't think so unless he was just scraping the existing gravel up or something.
