Mikey pipes!!. a couple winters I worked with an organization that helped fix heating systems (here in ohio) for families in need.. whie some of the places were tough to work in, the work was extremely rewarding.. knowing we were bringing people heat to their houses again.. sometimes systems that hadnt worked in months.. Hey why not just cut the pipe and use abs replacement with 2 rubber fernco fittings and just replace the leaking section?

Good you're fixing those leaks. The boiler would have a short life with all that fresh water feeding in there. Don't want it to blow like the chocolate factory in Pennsylvania!

I never knew that, and without me GOOin it and getting bullshit....Fresh water is very bad for a steam system, minerals, PH etc?? My family had/has a few multi homes that were steam, some now converted to hot water and they do work very well, but my brother has 1 home and it's still a VERY OLD SCHOOL steam system. Using my knoggin, I imagine the fresh minerals/PH etc from exchanging the water often is a bad thing for any circulating system, or is steam even worse? Maybe because it's a higher temp?? I have thought about using an additive when filling a new and or drained boiler.. But, I didn't know what to use and adding it wouldn't be easy.

Boilers not a big issue in this region. But got me thinking. Water softeners add salt to water system. Bet boilers pipes wouldn't like that very much.

Was still lots of lead drains red & yellow brass water piping with fine and coarse threads. Shallow and deep well’s. Best of luck! Cape Cod John

No service on boiler and terrible homemade fixes which don’t fix anything. Replacing the rusted out sections is the way to go. And get the boiler PM or serviced every year.

Really sad to see neglect + a relative’s DIY “repairs”. Too many homeowners neglect the mechanical systems in their homes that provide heat and or hot water. NEGLECT or lack of understanding how these systems work, can be quite expensive, to repair or replace, or as Mikey explained, deadly. From an explosion or death by carbon monoxide poisoning, either one is a terrible tragedy.

if your not going to maintain a boiler system then just bite the bullet and switch to electric forced air its pretty much maintenance free other than filter changes that anyone with 2 brain cells can do. if you stay doing no maintenance your going to have a failure when you need it most and then have frozen pipes and a destroyed house from the resulting water damage

@@teamdrummond6915 problem is, that's a huge can of worms waiting to be opened. touching that one section to replace will likely end up causing multiple other pinhole leaks or even pipe breakage. steam pipes with a hole on the bottom are pretty much equal to drain/sewer pipes with a hole on the bottom, you look at it from ten feet away and the whole thing becomes leak. lol
